Shit... 99% sure Guinea Pig is pregnant

Bit of a disaster... I lost one of my two lovely girls at the start of December. We were devastated, they were like two peas in a pod. I had a post on here at the time.

After just over a week I figured I needed to get another Guinea pig to keep my remaining one happy. Bought from a pet store as we don't have any rescues.... and I'm 99% sure the baby is pregnant 😡

Can't get her in to see the Vet until Tuesday morning.

She's had no vet care during pregnancy, haven't been feeding her any supplements. She was 8 weeks when she came to us, so young to be having babies. We've had her 55 days.

What the hell do I do now?

Day 62 and I have no update I'm afraid 😫 Still pregnant, and just getting bigger by the second it seems! She's a minimum of 63 days pregnant today so SURELY she'll go this weekend 🤞

Did anyone notice anything before labour started that I could watch out for? I've decamped to the sitting room to sleep for the weekend in the hope I'll be here when it starts

Waiting for news from the GP maternity wing 👩‍🍼

I notice GPs are born with fur and teeth to deter predators! Like GP loving Mumsnetters!

Oooh, could be a few days yet;
Guinea pigs typically have a gestation period between 59 to 72 days, averaging 68 days. In general, a guinea pig pregnancy will last just a little over a couple of months.

YourWinter · 16/02/2024 20:53

They’re unlikely to need any help, we had 60+ baby piggies over 10 years or so and they invariably arrived overnight without any problems at all.

Looking forward to pics! Have fun

What should I do when my guinea pig gives birth? So, the big day is here—now what? Labor, similar to the process for humans, can take a lot out of a guinea pig.
Common labor signs include:

  • Straining
  • Vocalizing
  • Mucusy or bloody discharge
  • Changes in the pelvic area: A guinea pig’s pelvic bones are fused before giving birth. When the birthing process begins, hormones cause the pelvis to relax and separate. This usually begins to happen a couple of days before labor.
  • Eeek.

I just googled this too, I think this little GP is going to make us wait the full 72 days!!!!

I wonder if the age of mum has any bearing on how long the pregnancy is.

InAPickle12345 · 16/02/2024 20:59

Oh goodness, I really hope she doesn't make us wait the whole 70 days! I'll be exhausted, I've been waking a couple of times a night to come and check on her 😫😅

Anyone know how to recognise the change in the pelvis? Is it something that you can see or feel?

Only google again -
When her pelvic bones are spread approximately 1 to 2 fingers apart, the labor is very near.
You can sense the distance between the bones by gently positioning your finger on the belly just a few centimeters from the anus.

We only realised 2 of our new 3 were pregnant the day before the pups were born.
DD1 woke me up in the morning saying “mummy we got more guinea pigs”. I have never got out of bed so fast!
baby guinea pigs are so cute, we still have our 4 pups who are 4 now. We had to get more cages but I couldn’t bare to give them away.

Interesting! I've been trying to handle her as little as possible because she's still a bit skittish around us having only been here a couple of months, but I might give it a go tomorrow and see what I can feel!

Haha, another one making me feel better for not noticing! What a shock to wake up and see your GPs have multiplied 😂😂😅

I don't have any photos of our baby ones sadly (also 20+ years ago!!) I bet my mum does, maybe I'll ask her.

Soonenough · 16/02/2024 22:29

Don't think you have to really do anything to help. She will just do it herself. Weird part was seeing a small perfectly round red blob in the hay then realised it was a guinea pig placenta . Gone next time I looked so I guess she was a forerunner of eating it ? Definitely noticed that she was unhappy with handling a lot before babies came I thought maybe just wasn't holding her properly. It was hard not to want to touch the babies but I think I was worried about her rejecting them . Didn't even disturb her by cleaning out just tried to do it on the opposite side she was on.

Ladyj84 · 16/02/2024 22:38

From an experienced piggy owner don't separate females they still enjoy the company and don't hurt each other and your non pregnant female will be a comfort

tighterthancramp · 16/02/2024 22:40

I've never owned a GP. I've never wanted to and never will BUT I am so bloody invested! Keep us updated op 😂

Zippedydoodahday · 17/02/2024 00:02

I'm intrigued how labour works given they come out like mini adults. It's not like they're foals who have to keep their legs folded up to get out. They could practically scurry out themselves with those little legs.

Oh this is the best thread EVER.

Here is my elderly chonk. He's a rescue so I don't have baby pictures but I often wonder what he looked like when he was tiny ♥️
