I have a question about centaur babies.

Would the human section be all floppy and helpless like a whole human baby, while the horsey but be able to walk around like a horse baby? Or would both half’s be either humanly floppy and under developed or Horsily matured?

and how would mama centaur birth something that shape?

And what about unicorn foals? Are they born with a horn or does the horn grow after birth? If they come out with horn intact what on earth does that do to the mother??

As a Scot i can confirm the Unicorn horn grows with age.

Imanalias · 09/08/2023 10:16

Imagine if all along we've had it wrong and unicorns don't have horns, but the things on their foreheads are giant stings.

OsirisservesAnubis · 09/08/2023 10:30

Thought this was fitting

Every time I scroll past this thread it reminds me of people I knew who said they had "indigo babies". I'd rather have a centaur to be honest-if someone else gave birth to it.....

They had a what???

CurlewKate · 17/08/2023 12:07

@WitcheryDivine It was a Thing. People thought they had a baby that was the next stage of human development.

Gosh um

how’s that’s worked out for them?

FannyCann · 17/08/2023 14:38

It has just occurred to me how handy it must be for centaurs to have hands - they can do their own blacksmithing - hoof trimming and shoes if they wanted them. Though it might involve a few contortions - maybe it would be better to do each other's.

MavisMcMinty · 17/08/2023 15:03

I imagine centaurs in the wild will get enough exercise to keep their hooves perfectly conditioned and in no need of shoes.

Domesticated ones are of course a different matter, and yes, good point, the back ones would be a bit of a stretch. You’d probably have to sit on your haunches to do them, and it’s going to be harder to level off the hooves without testing how they look on the ground.

Oioicaptain · 17/08/2023 15:32

I'm laughing so much at your question. You have really brightened up my day.

newnamethanks · 17/08/2023 16:20

And what about mermaids? Do they hatch out of eggs or are they born live to a mermum?

WitcheryDivine · 17/08/2023 18:10

Yes you’d definitely have to do each other‘s backhooves (or possibly go to a professional where maybe you’d leap onto an elevated platform like in a garage and the hoofiatrist would give you an expert tidy up) - or end up wonky

MavisMcMinty · 17/08/2023 18:16

I imagine they have good hard feet like any native mountain pony. Except bigger.

1dayatatime · 17/08/2023 20:18

@MavisMcMinty

I thought about joking that for mountains half human half goat would be better but decided it wouldn't be very fauny.

InMySpareTime · 17/08/2023 20:37

A mountain faun would be four goat legs and a human torso, like a goaty centaur.

I suppose centaur foals are very, very hungry.

StBrides · 18/08/2023 20:30

Must be. Didn't realise they had such short legs though

This looks like a sow-centaur, but drawn by a monk hopped up on mushrooms.

Surely she’s have to eat all the hours in the day to sustain that level.
But also, this would only work if the foals were like tiny piglets or puppies.

Totally un-believable I’m afraid.

Some medieval manuscripts have drawings of camels and elephants clearly drawn at second hand from a description from someone who saw them once when they were on crusade or pilgrimage, and I've often wondered how the conversations went in the scriptorium with the artist. 'A hump in the MIDDLE of the back? howdya put a saddle on, then? a long neck and it spits? rigghhhhht. and an animal with a.... trunk in the middle of the face instead of a snout? a what? TREES have trunks, not animals.'

Exeter Cathedral has a carving of an elephant done by someone who'd obviously seen one.

I love those drawings.

Although some monks had clearly never seen dogs and cats for themselves, either 😄

I've found a nice gallery of medieval elephants including the Exeter one
