I have a question about centaur babies.

BerthaKit · 04/08/2023 12:24

Would the human section be all floppy and helpless like a whole human baby, while the horsey but be able to walk around like a horse baby? Or would both half’s be either humanly floppy and under developed or Horsily matured?

and how would mama centaur birth something that shape?

I thought centaurs were always boys ? But where do they come from if that is the case ? Maybe same sex mating is a thing with mythical creatures, and the reason they no longer exist is because all the men centaurs couldn't stand the pain of childbirth

ErrolTheDragon · 04/08/2023 23:29

** I wasn't sure about the di or bi tbh... two of 'em, anyhow. Only thing that makes sense.

And what's the difference between fauns and centaurs? Do fauns all wear scarves?
Fauns are top half human, bottom half goat bipeds. They only need to wear scarves in winter.

Wheati · 04/08/2023 23:38

How do they sleep? I cant imagine not being able to sleep on my back! It must be quite uncomfortable and heavy carting a big horse end around.

Also do they use a toilet?!

ErrolTheDragon · 04/08/2023 23:47

It must be quite uncomfortable and heavy carting a big horse end around.

But it's a big horse carting the top half of a human around, easier than a horse carrying a whole person (and its own head).

I'm so pleased I opened this thread, you wonderfully bonkers people.

Fantasia. Def baby centaurs and fauns I think.
I think they were self sufficient from birth. Divine beings in Greek myths were up and atom as soon as they popped out. Heracles strangled snakes in his cradle, Hermes made his first lyre.
it’s when you start thinking about mermaids and mermaid sex that your mind explodes.

Wait, isn't the phrase "up and at 'em" not "up and atom"? Or have I been saying it wrong?

Anyway. This thread is delightful. I made the mistake (?) of WhatsApping DS2 to ask him his thoughts. It led to a lot of replies about how centaurs are portrayed in different mythologies. And mermaids. And then his own thoughts based on all of those.

According to this they breast feed and eat game:

They would be very good at hunting.

And what about unicorn foals? Are they born with a horn or does the horn grow after birth? If they come out with horn intact what on earth does that do to the mother??

Reckon it would be the same process as baby rhinos.

Glad you asked this OP. I've always wondered this as well but it felt too weird to ask 😂

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/08/2023 00:26

I always thought Merfolk were right goers. I suppose the buoyancy and flexibility helps🧜‍♀️🧜🧜‍♂️

I wish I hadn't read this thread 😂, I'm deep in thought about centaur anatomy now, forget birthing!

I've never thought before what the insides of a centaur must be like and now it's horrifying me - the human part would be pretty much 100% lungs just to keep the whole body going and then the horse part would be all the digestion etc, so a centaur has a ridiculously long trachea like a giraffe then?
How does the human half have any comfortable movement range when it would be an entire block of ribs to protect the massive lungs?
And how do human teeth cope with all the grazing or does the horse part not need horse food and is fine with human food?
And how does a normal sized human mouth/teeth cope with eating enough food to keep a horse sized body going?

I shouldn't have clicked on this thread!

So....when Zeus seduced Leda was he swan sized or man sized? he'd have to be man sized, wouldn't he? or at the least a bloody big swan.

Swans can be up to 5'11 long with a massive wing span. By contrast, the average Bronze Age, Greek woman was only 5' tall.

Ah thanks, that makes sense.
Surely they'll wear a silk scarf when going to the opera, though?

No can't be, a horse doesn't have its lungs in its neck!

Presumably if they have two pairs of bosoms then they also have human & horse lungs?

A human body would like quite different without lungs inside and images of male centaurs all look quite ripped, they surely have a manly pair of lungs beneath their human ribs.

Ah, ok, I was assuming they were fully 'blended' and one set of organs had to spread between the bodies. If they have two sets of lungs though wouldn't the breathing pattern be quite weird (as only one human mouth & nose) to fill them both alternately? The centaur would barely be able to hold a conversation without panting massively? Horses at least don't have to tackle sentences and breathing. (The centaur would still be a weird heavy breather with just one set of massive lungs though but at least wouldn't have to fill two sets separately).

Oh good point!

A centaurian heavy-breather sounds pretty creepy- imagine hearing that when you think you're alone in the stables!

Perhaps there is some sort of circular breathing pattern? Or like a wave - you know how when you breathe deeply and diaphragmatically? Like that - but...more.

IHateLegDay · 05/08/2023 01:12

Ok I think we're at the point now where we're gonna need some centaur anatomy diagrams!

Think you're right, they'd all have to be masters of controlled breathing not weird mouth breathers like I work with 😂 That's started me off thinking about the centaur snoring though with massive lungs and tiny human sinuses.... I think I might not be cut out to live with centaurs.

Minesril · 05/08/2023 01:51

According to the Narnia books they have to eat human food but also need to graze a couple of hours a day as well.

Which is why it's such a serious thing to have them come stay with you. It's a lot of food!

The Prince Caspian film had lady centaurs.

Errolwasahero · 05/08/2023 03:18

I’m stuck on how they had sex.

Surely centaurs have bigger problems than this...extremely long spine bent at an awkward angle., two sets of ribs, potentially 2 pelvises, and the need to keep flies away.

However I am now visualising the horse bit cantering skittish around whilst the child but flails and flops around in an ungainly manner.

John Finnemore does a brilliant sketch on how horrendous it is to be a centaur - constantly having to eat, in order to try and fill a horse-size stomach using a human-sized mouth, and only able to eat hay and oats, which his human taste buds find unpalatable but are the only thing his horse-stomach can digest.

"Even at night! If I don't wake up every 90 minutes to force down a few handfuls of hay, I DIE!"

Like horses surely? If it’s two centaurs. If they are born from one horse parent and one human or nymph parent… well… I don’t want to think about that.

I’m not convinced by this (sorry, Clive). They don’t have the teeth for grazing.

swimminginthesun · 05/08/2023 07:35

centaurs can usefully feed from both their boobs and their udders.

Wait. Are they called “udders” on a horse/centaur?!

Well, you see, I thought that; but surely the human body would seriously get in the way? Like they would clash too much. I did have something if an epiphany while on the loo in the night, but I’ve forgotten it.

oth, I guess oral would be out.
