I have a question about centaur babies.

Would the human section be all floppy and helpless like a whole human baby, while the horsey but be able to walk around like a horse baby? Or would both half’s be either humanly floppy and under developed or Horsily matured?

and how would mama centaur birth something that shape?

Does that hurt much with the hooves? having seen vets yank out a calf using ropes I wouldn't much fancy that.

Do a Google image search of newborn foal's hooves! They are proper weird/soft.

I thought (well, I say thought, I hadn't really until I came onto this thread) that that would be the case. Hard hooves in the womb would be very uncomfortable.

The horns are little stubby nubs that grow as the unicorn grows.

or else they are soft like baby hedgehog quills before they stiffen up.

I’ve asked my DD, who was unicorn obsessed for about 10yo are, apparently baby unicorns are born with a small stub where the horn will be and it grows as they grow

T-Rex. Missionary?

This reminds me of this I saw posted on twitter the other day. I’d never thought of a centaur in reverse but now I can’t unsee it

Did think that, except think of the weight. Perhaps the tails flipped up. Stegosauruses couldn't do missionary, though.

Foal hooves are almost feathery. They freak me out.

To answer an earlier question I can confirm that unicorn horns are retractable, much the same as an umbrella, in early years

I think Centaur pregnancy is longer so Centaur newborns are more like toddlers IYSWIM.

Yes this. Has to be in order for the sizes to work- a foal is a lot bigger than a newborn.

This makes a lot of sense to me!

Our pregnancy times are too short for our babies to develop. It would make sense if the pregnancy was longer that the human part would be more developed.

I like it!

Retractable.....do they spring out suddenly like a flick knife or do they unfold slowly? The former seems dangerous but the latter seems inefficient.

SoundTheSirens · 04/08/2023 12:53

Maybe dinosaurs, being lizards, reproduced via external fertilisation?

FoxClocks · 04/08/2023 12:56

Unicorn babies would probably be like other creatures with horns such as cows, and the horn grows after they are born.

Boatshoes · 04/08/2023 12:56

This thread has seriously livened up my afternoon whilst I’m in soft play hell with the lids 😂

Off to google that. I have no idea why 'how did T Rex mate?' popped into my head the other day but it did and not having an answer worries me.

Definitely this.

They come out aged about 2, ready to go!

I knew the answer would be somewhere on the internet. Complete with helpful pics .No stegosaurus mating, though.

Nothing to add, other than to state this is my favourite MN thread to date!

TheDogsMother · 04/08/2023 13:12

It would need a very strange babygro.

The proto-fish behind them look somewhat traumatised, mind you.

I think that it would have to be as physically mature as a horse foal, for the same reasons - ability to get up and run with it's mother if necessary.

But the birth! Maybe they all have c sections
