Boots refusing to sell canesten to men! Wtf!

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:25

Dh went to boots to buy canesten today and the sales person refused to sell it to him as he was a man! Apparently the pharmacist stepped in and he bought it.
Wtf? Surely men can get thrush or could have been buying it for someone else. It's bonkers
Apparently she said it was a boots policy!

The pharmacist stepped in and sold it to him, sounds like an error on behalf of the person serving and the pharmacist will be aware and no doubt make the team aware etc. If it was boots policy the pharmacist wouldn't have done this, very odd thread to start when he was in fact able to buy it.

What is odd about starting this thread because he was eventually able to buy it after involving the pharmacist?

That shouldn’t be the way it works - clearly there was an error that needs flagging as some people might be less able to advocate for themselves.

I don’t understand your comment at all @Pugglemuggle

PonyPatter44 · 01/06/2023 18:33

How did you spot that Dave needed the canesten in the first place? Does he limp a bit, or go off his food or something? I know nothing about massive millipedes, so am willing to learn!

He’d still have had a male body, so I’ve no idea what your point is?

A transgender man may have a vagina.

MMUmum · 01/06/2023 18:38

Just a heads up I asked for Canesten from pharmacy, I was refused because I am over 60 and thrush may be a sign of something more serious,🙄 I ordered it from Amazon next day delivery no problems

I'm surprised they said openly he couldn't buy it if he was a man! Surely he could have been identifying as a woman!!

Huh?!

GoodChat · 01/06/2023 18:40

@BodyKeepingScore but sometimes you know what you need even if the pharmacist is going to tell you to go to the GP, because the GP has told you previously its cheaper to buy OTC or you'll have certain recurring symptoms that will need treatment.

I had a spot/rash on my face last year which I was convinced was ringworm. I asked the pharmacist in Tesco what she advised and she gave me Canesten. It cleared it up whatever it was.

Did your ring worm have thrush on its leg though? Theres the question

Except it wasn’t Boots policy as he was allowed to buy it. What is the point of this thread, if you think Boots have a training issue with staff tell them.

No one cares about Boots any more unless they’re for Dave!

I love the fact that this thread has split into two camps - those who are being very serious about the responsibilities of pharmacists and OTC medicines, and the rest of us who are just interested in Dave.

If he was a transwoman he would not.

Ringworm is a fungal infection so Canesten works.

Actually there seems to be a third discussion going on too.😉

This did make me laugh! Grin

Frogmila · 01/06/2023 19:02

Poor Dave! How did you notice he had one bad leg and how do you know it's fungal? Will he need to be isolated?

Thank goodness there are some sensible people on this thread!!

Canestan Thrush cream (2% clotrimazole) is not licensed to be sold to men, for the reasons said above - men are usually advised to speak to their GP if they think they have thrush.

There is a lower strength Canestan cream (1% strength) which is for anti fungal properties - again men have to be spoken to so staff can ensure it’s being used for the reasons it’s actually licensed for!

Someone else mentioned about UTIs and antibiotics - it’s a service Boots provide for women aged 16-64 (who are not pregnant or have diabetes) and you need to have a consultation with the pharmacist and provide a urine sample. It’s not as simple as just rocking up to the counter and getting antibiotics (usually nitrofurantonin) straight away. This ITI service is not suitable for men because men need to be seen by a GP - for the reasons mentioned before (GP must rule out prostate issues, etc)

Sometimes people on MN can get carried away and provide wrong info.

mainsfed · 01/06/2023 19:03

Off topic but can ringworm ever go away on its own? I’m sure I had one in my tummy but seems to have disappeared….

Berlioz23 · 01/06/2023 19:04

@GoodChat well in that case the gp should prescribe it to take the responsibility, the pharmacist can’t access the patients notes so can’t safely sell it. If it is cheaper than on prescription the pharmacy staff will tell you and then you can buy it cheaper as long as they’ve seen a prefor it.

mainsfed · 01/06/2023 19:04

*on my stomach
