Boots refusing to sell canesten to men! Wtf!

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:25

Dh went to boots to buy canesten today and the sales person refused to sell it to him as he was a man! Apparently the pharmacist stepped in and he bought it.
Wtf? Surely men can get thrush or could have been buying it for someone else. It's bonkers
Apparently she said it was a boots policy!

That has to be some kind of error. What did they say when he challenged it?

Pugglemuggle · 01/06/2023 16:34

The pharmacist stepped in and sold it to him, sounds like an error on behalf of the person serving and the pharmacist will be aware and no doubt make the team aware etc. If it was boots policy the pharmacist wouldn't have done this, very odd thread to start when he was in fact able to buy it.

sliderspool · 01/06/2023 16:36

I also had this when buying this for DH too. The pharmacist said that men having thrush can be a sign of something more serious and to go the dr. This is crazy.

AnneElliott · 01/06/2023 16:37

I'm surprised they said openly he couldn't buy it if he was a man! Surely he could have been identifying as a woman!!

sliderspool · 01/06/2023 16:37

To add - the pharmacist gave me the smallest tube and said DH needed to go to the DR. Next time I will say it's for me to save the hassle.

llamallama6384 · 01/06/2023 16:37

The pharmacist stepped in.
Complete non issue , obviously just a mistake.

sliderspool · 01/06/2023 16:38

It's not an error. Boots policy is that men should go to the dr if they have thrush, but they seemingly will sell a small tube to help while waiting for an appt I presume.

Bromptotoo · 01/06/2023 16:38

Not that odd!!

I was given the nth degree before being allowed Syndol (paracetamol/codeine) in Tesco because I gave an honest answer to do I take it regularly. Should have said no but was honest and said regularly but not frequently.

Other time was in a branch of Lloyds Pharmacy. Wanted two Otrivine sprays one for now and one for spare. Would only let me have one!!

sliderspool · 01/06/2023 16:40

I tell the pharmacist what they want to hear, so I can get medication I need (for counter based medicines)

Yeah - he should have said they were misgendering him.

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:40

The stupid thing is we needed it for the millipedes. It's cheaper than getting it from the vet.

He’d still have had a male body, so I’ve no idea what your point is?

Don't ever tell them that!

ArcticSkewer · 01/06/2023 16:43

So instead of lying that he needed it, he can lie and say you need it.

titchy · 01/06/2023 16:43

Sorry millipedes?! How, what, why?!!!

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:43

I wouldn't it was the vet recommended getting it.said it's the same as the vet one at £20.

One of them has a fungal infection.

I have to know why millipedes need canesten?

My dh has definitely been allowed to buy it for me in the past. But they did ask him who and what it was for.

LlynTegid · 01/06/2023 16:45

Someone is in pain, needs medication that can be bought over the counter. Asks someone who is well enough to get it, or just passing by.

Boots has lost it's way in so many areas, glad the pharmacist stepped in.

Fleurdecerisier · 01/06/2023 16:45

Well I think we can all agree that none of us was expecting that plot twist.

They don't like yoghurt.

Readyplayerthr33 · 01/06/2023 16:47

Men dont often get thrush unless there is something more serious going on. The policy is that men are advised to go and see their GP. Boots don’t want to be covering up signs of a more serious condition by selling thrush treatment to men without being sure they will go and see their GP.

SilverOrchid · 01/06/2023 16:48

When DH had thrush and went to boots, they sold him canesten and told me to take/use it and that he should get some different cream that they didn’t have in stock. He went to the docs and got a prescription (but his was also oral, so a bit different).
