Boots refusing to sell canesten to men! Wtf!

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:25

Dh went to boots to buy canesten today and the sales person refused to sell it to him as he was a man! Apparently the pharmacist stepped in and he bought it.
Wtf? Surely men can get thrush or could have been buying it for someone else. It's bonkers
Apparently she said it was a boots policy!

My DH tried to get antibiotics for a UTI over the counter (like they tell you to) and they refused because he’s male as well.

I find this weird, I understand male symptoms can be different but he definitely had a UTI. Then when he went to the GP, they complained that he didn’t just go to the pharmacy!

Halftermdaysathome · 01/06/2023 16:50

Best unintentional drip feed ever 😂

Hope your millipede gets better soon (pet millipede or your DHs "millipede")

MrTiddlesTheCat · 01/06/2023 16:51

I wonder what their policy is on selling it to millipedes?

LotsOfBalloons · 01/06/2023 16:51

Hang on you can get antibiotics for a uti over the counter?! (Obviously the millipedes wins the thread but I want to know this now!(

lieselotte · 01/06/2023 16:51

Who's to say it's for thrush. It is also sold for athletes foot.

Interestingly looking at the link it says it is rare for girls under 16 to get thrush. I had it for years from the age of 13, trying different creams. It was Canesten that worked for me. I have had it since and used the pessary but thankfully I don't get it very often at all anymore.

As nobody can see a GP, the rules on buying OTC need to change. Medicine is being withheld all the time from people who need it.

No. It's an anti fungal.

Marchintospring · 01/06/2023 16:52

Genuinely fascinating thread!

I want to know
why millipedes need canesten.
Why the Op has millipedes
Why thrush in men needs a doctor
What happens when trans women ask for it ( and if they are refused on sex based medical grounds why sex based grounds aren’t enough for other areas of life).

WakeMeUpWhenGoodOmensIsBack · 01/06/2023 16:52

I now really really want photos of you lovingly rubbing Canestan into hundreds of tiny legs.

Isn't it the case that women get UTIs quite often but it's quite serious if a man gets one? Maybe that's the reason.

BigglyBee · 01/06/2023 16:53

I've never had thrush, or a millipede, but I have had to use canestan on a hen.

highlandspooce · 01/06/2023 16:54

The thing that needs to change is the ability to see a GP. OTC meds are restricted for very good reason.

Mogs43 · 01/06/2023 16:54

How do you know that a Millipede has thrush? 😂

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:55

One of the millipedes has an infection on its leg and we don't want it spreading to the 4 others. It's a giant African millipede named Dave

Canesten/clotrimazole is used for jock itch and athletes foot, not selling it to a man who is likely to have either is daft.

lemons44 · 01/06/2023 16:58

Please can we see Dave OP.

titchy · 01/06/2023 16:58

Hope Dave gets better soon!

Men dont often get thrush unless there is something more serious going on. The policy is that men are advised to go and see their GP. Boots don’t want to be covering up signs of a more serious condition by selling thrush treatment to men without being sure they will go and see their GP.

I've bought it for DP and DD at different times for thrush.

First question is "is it for you?"

Once I said it was for a female and had been suggested via NHS no further questions.

UnctuousUnicorns · 01/06/2023 16:59

"Sorry millipedes?! How, what, why?!!!"

"The stupid thing is we needed it for the millipedes"

I think I must be tripping.

Mogs43 · 01/06/2023 17:00

Please can we see Dave ?

Moro93 · 01/06/2023 17:00

@LotsOfBalloons Yes, you can get Trimethoprim or Nitrofurantoin (not sure if spelt correctly) over the counter for UTI’s. As long as you don’t have a fever or abdominal/back pain.

@lieselotte Yeah, I thought this but then the GP was moaning saying he took up ‘valuable appointment time’ for a UTI and could have been treated over the counter. They need to get on the same page!

FirstFallopians · 01/06/2023 17:00

What kind of vet do you bring a millipede to? Surely the normal ones don’t have the expertise after dealing with cockapoos and moggies 90% of the time.
