Boots refusing to sell canesten to men! Wtf!

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:25

Dh went to boots to buy canesten today and the sales person refused to sell it to him as he was a man! Apparently the pharmacist stepped in and he bought it.
Wtf? Surely men can get thrush or could have been buying it for someone else. It's bonkers
Apparently she said it was a boots policy!

Wait - there used to be millipedes looking like that in Tanzania, and people would stay well away. Apparently they can produce secretions that can blind you if they get in the eye. I do hope Dave's a different species!

I had a spot/rash on my face last year which I was convinced was ringworm. I asked the pharmacist in Tesco what she advised and she gave me Canesten. It cleared it up whatever it was.

If it cleared up with Canesten it was probably ringworm then.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 01/06/2023 18:13

You can buy it in the supermarket, not even at a pharmacy counter.

Tesco has a wide range of Canestan products as do all the other supermarkets

This is useful to know. I will be 60 in 7 1/2 years. Do you think it's worth me getting on the list for an appointment now, just in case?

Yes.

I've never had thrush, or a millipede, but I have had to use canestan on a hen.

Wow! After reading this threat, I’ll never again look at a tube of Canestan the same way!!

Pacflan · 01/06/2023 18:15

Aw Dave is a sweetie! Agree with others though it wasn't a twist I saw coming. As has been said there are reasons certain meds are restricted differently between the sexes, sounds like they dealt with it fine by having the pharmacist make the final decision.

One of the millipedes has an infection on its leg and we don't want it spreading to the 4 others. It's a giant African millipede named Dave

If Dave the millipede's only got five legs left, the infection is the least of its problems...

We call them a shongololo :)

I have to know why millipedes need canesten?

My dh has definitely been allowed to buy it for me in the past. But they did ask him who and what it was for.

Have you every tried putting yoghurt up a millipede's chuff?

WhoHidTheCoffee · 01/06/2023 18:19

Has anyone nominated this thread for Classics yet?! Absolutely brilliant. Wishing Dave and his leg well 😂😂

Eugenieonegin · 01/06/2023 18:20

Except it wasn’t Boots policy as he was allowed to buy it. What is the point of this thread, if you think Boots have a training issue with staff tell them.

butterpuffed · 01/06/2023 18:21

How did you manage to see thrush on one of Dave's legs ? Are you and your family teeny weeny like the Borrowers ?

knittingaddict · 01/06/2023 18:21

My husband's first sign of bladder cancer was a urinary infection. Men don't get infections like that nearly as often as women do. I had loads in my younger years. I think the advice for men is different, but they should explain it properly rather than just refuse.

I know thrush isn't the same as a uti, but I think the principle still rings true.

Note - we moved to a different part of the UK before the signs were picked up. Our previous GP did nothing apart from treat for an infection. The consequences could have been terrible.

Changeling78 · 01/06/2023 18:22

Can we have a picture of the centipede please, I need to know their names. Dave looks like a cool little guy.

Much easier if you have a Giant Emerald Pill Millepede, I'd think.

PSA:
recurrent thrush in the over 60s female is often not thrush but something else, often lichen-sclerosius but possibly more serious

the licence for canasten (and generic clomitrazole) is therefore limited to prevent adverse health outcomes

I went in the other day and brought some hydrocortisone cream one sold me some. Went back a week later to get some more but one assistant told me she couldn't sell it to me as it was in my neck. I feel for your poor husband

strawberryicecream6464 · 01/06/2023 18:26

Get well soon, Dave!

Riverlee · 01/06/2023 18:27

@Stressedgiraffe Not read whole thread, so not sure if this has been mentioned, but you put the pharmacist in a risky situation as You brought a product licensed for humans for animal use. Thus could actually jeopardise the pharmacist’s registration and he could be in serious trouble if found out. He’s not allowed to sell human medicines for animals.

liveforsummer · 01/06/2023 18:28

Improbablecat · 01/06/2023 17:08

Poor Dave. Hope his fungal leg gets better soon.

I try to use vague but not strictly incorrect language with the chemist. Another good pet medicine is chloramphenicol eye drops, which are exactly the same for cats as for humans.

Last time my cat had an eye infection the vet said I'd save a fortune getting it from a human chemist.

"Can I get some chloramphenicol eye drops please, they're for Alice, my wee one. She's 12. Her clinician advised me to get her some"....

Yes I have to word carefully when buying this for the horse also 😅

Bananalanacake · 01/06/2023 18:29

Dave is gorgeous. Do you get advantage card points with the cream.

caringcarer · 01/06/2023 18:29

AnneElliott · 01/06/2023 16:37

I'm surprised they said openly he couldn't buy it if he was a man! Surely he could have been identifying as a woman!!

Priceless. 😂 😂

sliderspool · 01/06/2023 16:40

I tell the pharmacist what they want to hear, so I can get medication I need (for counter based medicines)

That completely defeats the purpose of the pharmacist and pharmacy staff being trained to ask the right questions to ensure that customers are receiving the correct and safe medications. For example, someone on blood pressure medications or with high blood pressure that isn't being managed can't take OTC decongestants. Lying about things puts your health at risk.
