Boots refusing to sell canesten to men! Wtf!

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:25

Dh went to boots to buy canesten today and the sales person refused to sell it to him as he was a man! Apparently the pharmacist stepped in and he bought it.
Wtf? Surely men can get thrush or could have been buying it for someone else. It's bonkers
Apparently she said it was a boots policy!

Men dont often get thrush unless there is something more serious going on. The policy is that men are advised to go and see their GP. Boots don’t want to be covering up signs of a more serious condition by selling thrush treatment to men without being sure they will go and see their GP.

It may not be for thrush - Canesten is also used to treat tinea cruris AKA jock rot AKA crotch itch: A red fungal line in the crease between thigh and groin. One thin dab all along it usually clears it up in one go. I believe women can get it under their breasts in hot weather.

The poor millipede!

Killingmytime · 01/06/2023 17:27

This is my fave thread ever

Killingmytime · 01/06/2023 17:28

Love dave! Centipedes on the other hand…

Runningonjammiedodgers · 01/06/2023 17:28

Please tell me when the Pharmacist asked DH who it was for DH answered 'its for my millapeade.' With no further explanation offered.

GellerYeller · 01/06/2023 17:29

I bought Canesten in Home Bargains but when I got home noticed it was a variant for Athlete’s Foot. Would that do next time? Good luck Dave.

Flapjacker48 · 01/06/2023 17:29

@Moro93 That GP has a poor grasp of male urology and lack of understanding of antibiotic prescribing rules then!

Scarbsbeach · 01/06/2023 17:30

A few days ago at our Tesco pharmacy I tried to buy a Canesten oral capsule that I’ve used in the past when having taken antibiotics I’ve ended up with thrush as well as an upset stomach. For the first time ever in my life it turns out I’m TOO OLD to buy something! It seems that there’s a new policy that if you’re over 60 you must see a Dr 🙄 to rule out other more serious reasons for the symptoms. I was left like a fish gawping 😲 funnily enough, I haven’t tried to book an appointment as yet….

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 01/06/2023 17:30

Your GP is in the wrong there. Male UTIs are more serious than female onea because of the risk of the prostate becoming infected, so a doctor is required. Says so in the "See a GP" box here https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/urinary-tract-infections-utis/

It's a millipede with only 5 legs?

😂

This is my favourite ever mn plot twist

Same 😂 this is the first time I've laughed out loud for a while whilst reading an MN thread. DP is asking what I'm chuckling at

This is so true. My DH had thrush which he got cream for from the practise nurse. It recurred lots and he was also sore (sorry if TMI).

I was concerned I had it and was reinfecting him, even though I had no symptoms (had a symptomless bout before). Turns out when he went back a to the docs a few months later, after continued soreness and no lasting effects from the cream, that he had type 2 diabetes. His Hba1c was extremely high. He’s now treated for the diabetes and his Hba1c is in normal range and everything else is back to normal!

mainsfed · 01/06/2023 17:33

How on earth do you spot thrush on one millipede leg?

Moro93 · 01/06/2023 17:34

@Flapjacker48 @VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia He was definitely in the wrong. He didn’t start complaining until he’d dip tested the urine and handed us a prescription. Then he started going on about ‘limited GP’s and appointment slots’ and how we should have ‘just went to a pharmacy for OTC treatment’. We probably should have complained but didn’t think at the time, we stupidly believed him and thought the pharmacist should have just gave us them.

WhatADrabCarpet · 01/06/2023 17:34

My husband's need for Canestan turned out to be diabetes. Wonder if that's why.

As to millipedes... who knew?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/06/2023 17:36

Going upstairs to use the loo is one thing - going for a good old nose in adult bedrooms is quite another. If I suspected that, I’d put a lock on the door.

TheOrigRights · 01/06/2023 17:37

AnneElliott · 01/06/2023 16:37

I'm surprised they said openly he couldn't buy it if he was a man! Surely he could have been identifying as a woman!!

Isn't it more likely that a female identifying as a man would require treatment for thrush?

This is a great thread. I hope Dave gets better soon.

I'm sure he'll be back on his feet soon enough and the OP will be able to listen to the tiny pitter-patter-pitter-patter-pitter-patter-pitter-patter-pitter-patter-pitter-patter......

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 01/06/2023 17:37

Dave is awesome. What are his friends called? Can we see them?

You can get Canesten as a general sale (GSL) medicine in the supermarket. It’s for athlete’s foot but I suspect that’s Dave’s problem anyway.

You can also get Otrivine (or a cheaper generic) as a GSL too.

This is useful to know. I will be 60 in 7 1/2 years. Do you think it's worth me getting on the list for an appointment now, just in case?

BonnieBobbin · 01/06/2023 17:39

How do you tell the millipedes apart? Well, obviously Dave is the one with sore leg* but for the others how do you know who is who?

*get well soon, Dave! Flowers

Flapjacker48 · 01/06/2023 17:39

@Moro93 Male "UTI's" (which are often the result of another urological problem(s)) also really need culture testing rather than a simple dip test as it is really important the right antibiotics are selected due to how antibiotics penetrate the prostate and testicles etc (for example nitrofuratonin is often not very useful for men depending on the issue)

Now, I feel sure this should be on the MIL thread, but somehow the random tangent seems quite at home on this thread.

I now really really want photos of you lovingly rubbing Canestan into hundreds of tiny legs.

I don't wish to kink-shame but this is a very specific request Grin

DaveRocks · 01/06/2023 17:40

I’ve just had to rejoin mumsnet to comment. This thread is hilarious 🤣 Dave is fab!

I often have to ‘bend’ the truth when I need to buy ‘optrex infected eyes’ eyedrops for my guinea pigs - they are much cheaper from Boots than they are from the vets!
