Boots refusing to sell canesten to men! Wtf!

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:25

Dh went to boots to buy canesten today and the sales person refused to sell it to him as he was a man! Apparently the pharmacist stepped in and he bought it.
Wtf? Surely men can get thrush or could have been buying it for someone else. It's bonkers
Apparently she said it was a boots policy!

@thelionthewitchtheaudacityofTHISbitch
Canesten isn't licensed to be sold to over 60's, this is not a Tesco policy. A GP should know that over 60's cannot buy it. For someone on antibiotics who has suffered from thrush before due to them they should prescribe fluconazole.

What an interesting reply - thank you. Is it easy for members of the public to check license conditions?

The packet should have gsl on it.

Also, look at the BNF (British National Formularly) which gives all the info - use, dose, side-effects etc.

Pharmacy items are legally classified in different ways-
GSL - general selling list - so everyday items, small packs of paracetamol, antihistamines etc, These can be sold anywhere.

P - Pharmacy only - larger packs of items, stronger medicines, needs a pharmacist’s input before selling. Sone items are GSL for certain illnesses, but P for others.

POM - prescription only medicines - needs a prescription before dispensing.

Good pharmacy assistants have been through training that makes them aware of this and aware what can be sold to whom. Therefore, by refusing the sale, she’s was actually being responsible, as she may may not had the authority to sell it, whilst the pharmacist can.

Oh Lord. More BS about why pharmacists are always up their own arse.

Operating within established guidelines can hardly be described as “up their own arse”!
You’ve clearly been hurt by a pharmacist just doing their job, maybe you should try to accept it wasn’t personal?

Oh yes that BS known as “the human medications act 2012” overseen by the statutory body the MHRA. The pharmacist can’t change the law, try your MP.

also - hope Dave’s leg(s) is/are better!

We have a Michael (well Mick) among the many, many Steves. (Steven Stephenson - aka Double Steve, Big Steve (quite small), Tiny Steve (very tall), Dr Steve (has a doctorate), Steve the dentist (is a dentist), Fiesta Steve (drove one) Dobbo (Steve Dobson), Welsh Steve (surname Jones but had never been west of London), Steve White (surname Black), Lucky Steve (disaster prone) and many many more. The Steve with no unique features became 'Bert' then one day someone introduced a friend who looked quite a lot like Bert so he became 'spare Bert' then another chap started drinking in the pub who also looked similar so he was Spare, spare Bert' I swear in our little corner of NE London 95% of boys born between 1968 and 1978 were called Stephen or Steven.

This has made my day 😊Double Steve, Spare Bert 😂

I'm fairly sure that if the lads had put as much time and effort into something useful that they put into giving each other nicknames they could have created world peace or found a cure for cancer. They all had nicknames even if they were the only one of the group with that name and they often evolved over time so the guy who started off as Homer (because he looked a bit like Homer Simpson) was eventually known as Bart's (as in Bart's Dad).

Steve and Dave are very much my generation. My own name is similar in popularity, and I know about 3 couples who are my name + my husband's name.

Did I ever tell you that Mrs. McCave
Had twenty-three sons and she named them all Dave?
Well, she did. And that wasn’t a smart thing to do.
You see, when she wants one and calls out, “Yoo-Hoo!
Come into the house, Dave!” she doesn’t get one.
All twenty-three Daves of hers come on the run!

We have several Steve & Clare/Claires and Steve & Sarahs. The girls with repeat names were alway just Clare A, Claire B etc where as the boys would never use initials.

Human Garbapentin is used for cats too.

Dave should be taught to dry thoroughly between his toes to avoid fungal issues in the future. And to change his socks more frequently. Natural fibres only of course.

😂❤️😂

Hooray for Dave's leg improvements!

My DH bought Canesten very recently from Boots, after catching ringworm from one of our DCs! There was no quibble. You just had a badly trained assistant. And as the pharmacist stepped in, and he was able to buy it, they obviously released it was an error also.

Not sure why you posted tbh! He went in to buy a product, and left with said product, albeit with a bit of a communication/training breakdown.

If the OP hasn't have posted. We wouldn't have known about Dave. Behave!

I work in a pharmacy and what a lot of people do or don’t know is that we have rules/regulations about what we can sell otc. I know lots of people are advised by the vet to buy this, that or the other, but as soon as a person tells us it’s for animal we have to refuse them. The reason being, it is NOT LICENSED to sell otc for anyone or anything that does not fall within its parameters.
If a product was sold and something happened to the animal or person then we could be prosecuted and lose our license to dispense. BTW I sell Canesten cream to men. It is allowed. The only thing with vaginal canesten products is they aren’t for under 16 or over 60. We do then have to refuse and refer to Dr’s.

Who even knew millipedes were kept as pets! I might look into this DH is cat/dog allergic but millipedes 🤣🤣🤣

MagicClawHasNoChildren · 04/06/2023 11:55

What does a fungal infection look like on a millipede?

mivona · 04/06/2023 12:35

I once mentioned that I was buying some stretchy dressing (not medicine! a dressing) for a foot injury on a chicken, and the Tesco pharmacy refused to allow me to buy it.

I don't mention any animals at all when I am buying stuff in a chemist anymore.

We know. This is why we lie. I never tell a pharmacist the truth because it's a pain to have to go to another one if they say bugger off to your GP. Especially irritating when you know whatever it is you're wanting will sort your boggle.

AllTheChaos · 04/06/2023 13:46

Just a brief note regarding the cost of veterinary medicines, one of the main manufacturers has just been bought out by a private equity firm, so expect to see prices going up soon, just as has happened with veterinary surgeries being bought out by PE companies. Pet owners seem to be viewed as a potentially highly lucrative market to be exploited / ripped off, whilst the poor vet staff get worked ever harder for no more reward 😞

Longdarkcloud · 04/06/2023 14:54

For those thinking of getting antibiotics from a pharmacy sans prescription my local pharmacist informed me that he is not authorised to dispense in these cases so you may have to shop around. Pain for me because I’m prone to UTIs and GP will readily prescribe on my say so but it’s virtually impossible to get an appointment now. I’m virtually housebound so it makes life very difficult
