Boots refusing to sell canesten to men! Wtf!

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:25

Dh went to boots to buy canesten today and the sales person refused to sell it to him as he was a man! Apparently the pharmacist stepped in and he bought it.
Wtf? Surely men can get thrush or could have been buying it for someone else. It's bonkers
Apparently she said it was a boots policy!

From a fairly wide sample of family/friends if one is called Dave at least three will be called Steve! Mark, Paul and Michael are all contenders for the final one.

Michael's a bit young.

Bet there's a Barry, two Roberts and a Neil, though.

CountZacular · 01/06/2023 21:21

I am absolutely loving the chat back and forth about men, thrush and treatment interspersed with Dave the millipede. Brilliant thread OP! 👏

A few days ago at our Tesco pharmacy I tried to buy a Canesten oral capsule that I’ve used in the past when having taken antibiotics I’ve ended up with thrush as well as an upset stomach. For the first time ever in my life it turns out I’m TOO OLD to buy something! It seems that there’s a new policy that if you’re over 60 you must see a Dr 🙄 to rule out other more serious reasons for the symptoms. I was left like a fish gawping 😲 funnily enough, I haven’t tried to book an appointment as yet….

Wow! I would not be doing well with that (despite only being in my (late) 50s and therefore policy not applying). My surgery has the best administration department ever so I would email them the "policy" and ask if the GP practice was aware and was happy under the circumstances for you to book an (unnecessary) appointment? The GP practice - through their local NHS trust - might be able to explain the policy or dispute it with Tescos.

Dave

He's fabulous! I was on holiday in Kenya once and they were everywhere - the locals called them the Mombasa Express because they are really speedy!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 01/06/2023 21:39

This careful distinction between animal and human medications can run in the other direction; I was once on holday for five days on Jersey and on the first morning my eight-year-old son had the high fever and all the symptoms of a condition he'd had before. I knew exactly what would bring the fever down and make him feel better, but at that time the Channel Islands were not interested in the NHS, and there was no way I could get it for him.

Luckily one of the other people I was in the hotel with was a vet, had come straight from work, and had the identical medicine in her bag. She worked out that he needed about a third the dose for an adult female goat, and told me never to tell anyone she had given me two days' worth of it. (So I haven't, and you didn't see me, and you can't prove anything.)

@LotsOfBalloons Yes, you can get Trimethoprim or Nitrofurantoin (not sure if spelt correctly) over the counter for UTI’s. As long as you don’t have a fever or abdominal/back pain.

@lieselotte Yeah, I thought this but then the GP was moaning saying he took up ‘valuable appointment time’ for a UTI and could have been treated over the counter. They need to get on the same page!

LOL at literally treating a man’s UTI over the counter oooh matron 😁

Same here.
None of that glaring at you that is so prevalent in high street pharmacies.

Same here too.

My local Boots even has antihistamines behind the counter, and always has an absolutely massive queue if you want to buy anything. I can buy them on Ocado without queuing for 20 mins.

Canesten isn't licensed to be sold to over 60's, this is not a Tesco policy. A GP should know that over 60's cannot buy it. For someone on antibiotics who has suffered from thrush before due to them they should prescribe fluconazole.

Could you buy them off the shelf at Boots rather than behind the counter?

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:40

The stupid thing is we needed it for the millipedes. It's cheaper than getting it from the vet.

Your millipedes have thrush?

One of the millipedes has an infection on its leg and we don't want it spreading to the 4 others. It's a giant African millipede named Dave

Your millipede has athlete's foot?

No. Not at my local Boots (London commuter area), but if I’m in London the following day, the Boots there have them on the shelf. 🤷‍♀️

HoppingPavlova · 01/06/2023 21:54

This is why I’m on Mumsnet. You learn something each day. Never knew these existed or were kept as pets. Have googled and learnt some fun facts.

"on its leg"
Like, just one individual leg?? How the effty-jeff do you apply any kind of cream to just one leg of a millipede @Stressedgiraffe

That is the thing I am struggling with most here.

So millipedes have only 5 legs? 😳
