Boots refusing to sell canesten to men! Wtf!

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:25

Dh went to boots to buy canesten today and the sales person refused to sell it to him as he was a man! Apparently the pharmacist stepped in and he bought it.
Wtf? Surely men can get thrush or could have been buying it for someone else. It's bonkers
Apparently she said it was a boots policy!

@EmmaGrundyForPM yep, if they knowingly did so, but that’s not what I meant, we were talking generally about selling out of a product license. I know a pharmacist who got investigated for forgetting to provide a syringe for a liquid medication! It was a bit more complicated than that but it came down to that in the end.

Berlioz23 · 01/06/2023 19:38

@TheShellBeach im following this thread so obviously I have 😅

I order most of my pharmacy stuff online now, tickboxes are much better than jobsworths.
They tend to have little info clickers too. So you KNOW why it might not be suitable rather than a vague "no"

By jobsworths do you mean...People doing their jobs?

Can we have a picture of the centipede please, I need to know their names. Dave looks like a cool little guy.

From a fairly wide sample of family/friends if one is called Dave at least three will be called Steve! Mark, Paul and Michael are all contenders for the final one.

Love this thread 😂😂

How dare they not sell something that’s potentially harmful. I’m sure your husband would have been really pleased if something awful happened to his tackle 😆
the whole point of being behind the counter is that items should only be sold in accordance with their product licence. And human medicines shouldn’t be sold for animals if there’s one specifically designed for pets.
you can buy clotrimazole off the shelf btw if you’re not bothered about the licensing. Unless you were buying the double strength one

You can buy the 2% one from any online pharmacy.

hugefanofcheese · 01/06/2023 19:48

Do you breed Daves?

MagicClawHasNoChildren · 01/06/2023 19:50

Dave is beautiful! 😍 What are the others called?

No, just pharmacists.

Same here.
None of that glaring at you that is so prevalent in high street pharmacies.

almondflake · 01/06/2023 19:59

I wouldn't like to buy shoes for Dave and his mates .
This has to be the best post ever , I'm actually crying while I'm reading this to my husband lol 😂

Ok. So you can’t buy it off the shelf then??

No, I mean jobsworths.
I got spoken to like shit and told to go to the gp for a bit of jock itch last year. The pharmacist was really rude to me.
I went online, bought what I needed, it cleared up within days.

TheFairyCaravan · 01/06/2023 20:01

One of our Guinea pigs had a hay poke in his eye so we needed antibiotic eye drops for him. We’d never had a problem buying them from the chemist before, so I popped along. I made up some cock and bull story about DH needing them but he wasn’t going to be back from work until after they’d closed, but they refused to sell me them.

He went to a different chemist on the way home from work and told them that I needed them but the eye infection had brought on a migraine so I couldn’t go out to the chemist myself. They reluctantly sold him some. I’ve since ordered 2 more tubes on line to have in the house. It must be really common to buy human meds for animals.

Yes, you can.
But not according to the OP's husband.

Yes, especially as veterinary preparations are so expensive.

But a lot of human medicines aren’t safe for animals, you’re best going to a vet. Ask for a prescription and you can buy the meds cheaper usually.
it’s a condition of sale that the pharmacist is meant to see the infected eye to check it’s not serious and that antibiotics are actually needed. People overusing is what causes antibiotic resistance and if there’s a scratch on the cornea or another condition it’s potentially sight threatening to start treating yourself with whatever you decide. The licensing is generally there to prevent harm🤷‍♀️

Same here, although it wasn't jock itch.
Pharmacy told me to ask the doctor, as they couldn't possibly sell it to me.
The doctor told me the pharmacist could sell it, no problem.
So (three days later) I finally got my medication.

I've always bought all medicines online since then.

That wasn't my only beef with pharmacists.

When I take my chickens to the vets, we often get given antibiotics meant for dogs, because despite chickens being a massive part of our food chain, there is no profit in keeping chickens well, so drugs just haven’t been manufactured for them.

Wildro · 01/06/2023 20:15

Just want to point out that these restrictions are usually legal requirements and pharmacists are following them for your safety and also to maintain their registration. They are not trying to make your life difficult for fun. Although in this case it was a misunderstanding..

SaxSick · 01/06/2023 20:19

Stressedgiraffe · 01/06/2023 16:40

The stupid thing is we needed it for the millipedes. It's cheaper than getting it from the vet.

😂😂😂

SaxSick · 01/06/2023 20:19

My vet charged me a fortune for anti histamines for my cat which were the same as you use for humans.

Your vet has the specialist knowledge to choose something safe though. And Dave’s gammy leg treatment was recommended by the vet. That is totally different to the owner doing a self diagnosis and treatment
