I bloody love a nice hotel. What is your favourite hotel you’ve stayed in?

Mine would be:
Crowne Plaza Changi (Singapore) and got upgraded to the roof terrace suite. Absolutely loved it.
The Langham Hong Kong and stayed in the junior suite!

Ngorongo crater lodge in Tanzania
www.andbeyond.com/our-lodges/africa/tanzania/ngorongoro-crater/andbeyond-ngorongoro-crater-lodge/

and it's been mentioned before - Four seasons in Orlando, which has the most amazing pool.

The Witchery in Edinburgh was the nicest but the comfiest was a premier inn Grin I love their pillows

Butterfly44 · 07/07/2021 06:45

Shamelessly placemarking!

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 07/07/2021 07:13

The Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.
Europa Regina, Venice.
Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf, Dubai.

All for special occasions, not our normal levels at all!
Also, oddly, the Marriott at Delhi Airport (daughter and I joined husband who was there on a business trip and we got upgraded to a suite). Lovely sniffer dogs at security wore leather bootees to protect their paws from the heat.

La Rosa in Whitby, beautiful room, quirky interior, lovely staff, amazing views of the sea and the abbey from the La Rosa room. Breakfast comes in a little hamper to your room. The staff are lovely.

Sticking close to home, another vote for the Balmoral in Edinburgh and Gidleigh Park in Devon.

Chewton Glen in the New Forest is gorgeous, Burgh Island has changed hands since I went, but it’s a must for Art Deco lovers.

In Scotland, Isle of Eriska and Kilcamb Lodge were both lovely.

We fell out of love with the Langham in London, but like the Capital in Knightsbridge (going there soon - it has also changed hands recently so will be interesting to see if it has changed much). Shangri-La in the Shard was great for a special occasion. Also liked the Landmark in Marylebone and Intercontinental Park Lane (have generally always had good experiences at Intercontinentals internationally).

You can’t go wrong with a Relais and Chateau, not all five star but all appealing in their own ways.

I remembered another that we loved - Marari Beach Resort in Kerala. It was pre-DC and the biggest holiday then-DP now-DH and I had been on. Great memories

AaronBurrSirr · 07/07/2021 08:24

The Rookery - Farringdon
Jeeva Klui - Lombok

Keep the UK and Ireland recommendations coming please.

Interesting to see Gleneagles mentioned several times. We had a reservation there several years ago, but then they contacted to advise of possible disruption/noise due to renovations.
I think it was the spa being done up. Anyway, we cancelled and had kind of forgotten about it since. Will add back to bucket list!

Another lovely one is Cliff House in Ireland. Very friendly staff, great service. The setting is amazing, like being on a ship but without the seasickness. More suited to a relaxing escape for couples than for children. Balcony suites are great.

YeokensYegg Best and most expensive aren’t synonymous in my experience. More often it’s about the whole experience rather than the size of the beds.

I’ve stayed in some very luxurious Middle Eastern ones (Burj al Arab, Jumeirah beach etc) but after two days you start to see the person sweeping the floor before you walk on it or press the lift call button for you. Then the luxury becomes a bit uncomfortable.

My favourites are a bit left of field probably.

Earls Regent in Kandy for fantastic service and monkeys around the pool. Love Kandy.
Mount Lavinia for the train ride into the city and the beach restaurant.

Peninsula HK just pips Langham HK. Langham has excellent executive lounge but my best memory of HK is arriving, finding my husband and then rushing out of Peninsula hotel, grabbing a McDonalds to eat whilst watching the Christmas lights over the harbour. The hotel staff were very happy to tell us where to grab a takeaway whilst they sorted our luggage.

The Ritz Carlton in Abu Dhabi also offered very personal service with their soprano learning the song I walked down the aisle to for our wedding anniversary dinner. The beach club chap always reserved our favourite spot and offered magazines and cooled water on arrival.

In India, the Leela Palace in Bangalore and Taj group were very comfortable but the Evolve Back resorts at Kabini and Hampi we’re far more memorable.

In Paris we usually stay in a friends apartment in 7th, but the Molitor is my favourite hotel because of the pool. Belle Rives in d’Antibes is lovely too, but that’s about the history and the location.

couchparsnip · 07/07/2021 08:34

The Hamilton Princess in Bermuda. DH was there for a job and they paid for the hotel. We are normally in Premier Inns or Travelodges so I have very little to compare it with but it was bloody brilliant!

StCharlotte · 07/07/2021 08:37

Two of my friends have worked for a company called "Leading Hotels of the World", one as a "mystery" guest - would be interesting to hear her opinion.

DH asked the other day where we should go for our 60ths in a couple of years so I'm keeping an eye on this thread.

DarceyDashwood · 07/07/2021 08:38

The Wynn in Las Vegas for sheer OTT colourful escape from reality-ness

The Royal Lahaina Resort in Hawaii - incredible views across the Pacific Ocean

God I miss hotels

LemonRoses · 07/07/2021 08:38

U.K. wise mine aren’t all that others might want.
Burgh Island is great fun.
In London we usually stay at my husband’s club, the Athenaeum, it’s very well located and only £120 a night but quite stuffy rules and not riotous. I prefer the Langham but it costs more.
The Lodore for its location and Spa. Restaurants are a bit hit and miss though.
Soho farmhouse is great fun.
Bovey Castle has lots to do and has the lodges, which give more space.
Soar Mill Cove apartments are well located and offer space for a family if you take both of them. Stunning location, good food in restaurant.

We also tend to want less glitz and dog friendly these days, so more often opt for good country pubs with rooms. There’s some fabulous offerings out there.

I'm no world traveller but this place was nice, stayed there a couple of years ago. www.royallancaster.com

Jent13c · 07/07/2021 09:21

Dubai address fountain views. Got a ridiculous deal (80% off that I had to get up at 4am to get). I've never seen a room like it, the bath was the size of a small pool and the room overlooked the burj Khalifa.

Mad4Max1 · 07/07/2021 09:25

Best looking from the outside & best pool
Marina Bay Sands Hotel Singapore
Pool has a view over the city
Excellent base to visit places in the gardens & city

However, some of the smaller hotels have been lovely over the years

Katefoster · 07/07/2021 09:25

Not a hotel but mhondoro safari lodge was incredible . We stayed there for our honeymoon and the next year it won best safari lodge in the world. It was incredible

Katefoster · 07/07/2021 09:26

Fond doux in St Lucia is my second top. The views are incredible

ittakes2 · 07/07/2021 09:36

Great thread thank you!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 07/07/2021 09:57

@Hairbrush123 I wonder if it’s worth asking for this to go into MN Classics so that people can easily refer back to recommendations?
