To go round?

We pay a company to clean our bins once a month on bin day. I’m not usually home when they come, but I’m off work today And happened to be in the kitchen. I watched my next door neighbour wait until the cleaner left, take the house number sticker off my bin and put it on his, then swap our bin for his so he had the cleaned bin and I had a non-cleaned one.

He was back in his house before I had time to contain the dog and go outside but now DH is home, WIBU to go round and ask for my bin back??

OP posts:
Seahorsemama · 29/06/2021 22:01

I would paint my house number on it and also paint “beware my neighbour at number xx likes to swap the bin as he’s too fucking tight to pay to get his own bin cleaned”

Hopikins · 29/06/2021 22:02

That is theft, you paid for the bin to be cleaned and he stole it and replaced it with his dirty one. Threaten to report him and say you either want your clean bin back or the money you have paid to have it cleaned and paint your bin very clearly in future. I would also let a few close neighbours know what has happened.

buckeejit · 29/06/2021 22:03

Op, this story was just what I needed, thanks. Love your dh retelling it as infinitum. I'd have to print leaflets for community service & put them through the neighbours doors or else report him to the Tory naughty step people.

What a fucking Liberty.

CastawayQueen · 29/06/2021 22:11

OMg im late to the party but I'd set up a camera in case he does it again
Or have let him do it so I could blackmail him with the footage

BrightYellowDaffodil · 29/06/2021 22:15

Paint socialist slogans on both bins

How about “I [heart] Kier Starmer”? Or plaster your bin in Labour election posters, papier-mâché style. Subscribe to the Morning Star and always leave a pile of them on top of your recycling bin.

Although I do know some northern protestants who keep their toaster on the counter.

Does the location of one’s toaster signify something in Ireland? Confused

SheSaidHummingbird · 29/06/2021 22:15

Tories are not having a great week.... (month, year, decade...)

OchonAgusOchonOh · 29/06/2021 22:23

@BrightYellowDaffodil - Does the location of one’s toaster signify something in Ireland?

No, not really. It was a reference to an episode of Derry Girls where they were listing the differences between catholics and protestants.

Given my ILs, who are very catholic, are the only people I ever came across who keep their toaster in a press, I suspect it was very much poetic licence.

buckeejit · 29/06/2021 22:41

No, the toaster thing has some credence apparently. Not for my parents who are Protestant as fuck but still keep their toaster out. Since the Derry girls thing I've discovered a couple of friends' parents do keep theirs in the cupboard.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 29/06/2021 22:50

@buckeejit - Since the Derry girls thing I've discovered a couple of friends' parents do keep theirs in the cupboard

But are they protestant or catholic?

MrsJuliaGulia · 29/06/2021 22:57

Have very much enjoyed the little Irish sub chat here. I’m Catholic And husband is Protestant and we keep the toaster on the worktop. Shur we need to toast our bagels every day.

I reckon my dad probably cleans the bin himself (not the recycling bin, see below). After all the water’s (phew) free and why would you pay someone to do something you can do yourself? (Even if you don’t in fact, do it yourself. I’ll have to ask him).
For avoidance of doubt, I’d say there are a fair few notions around where I grew up; I can think of at least 3 of my parents’ neighbours who would clean their bins if they thought it was a Thing.

Actually for a while there my dad didn’t want to pay Greyhound for the recycling. So he’d go out at about midnight and out his recycling in the neighbours’ bins. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Sydendad · 29/06/2021 23:00

@Darkstar4855

If he’s a councillor then I’d wait and film him the next time he does it and post the footage on facebook.
Great that he is a councillor: I would just fib and tell him that you did record him swapping it. Tell him that if he doesn't put your bin back, you will release the video and than hold it over his head for considerable time.
Insanelysilver · 29/06/2021 23:09

I can’t believe anyone would be such a CF ! It would be so satisfying to catch him doing it next time and film him.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 29/06/2021 23:10

@ MrsJuliaGulia - I can think of at least 3 of my parents’ neighbours who would clean their bins if they thought it was a Thing.

Dublin or have the notions spread to other parts of the country?

SingleMamaG · 30/06/2021 00:20

Imagine the headline
“Bin there done that!” Foolish councillor neighbour swaps his bin for clean bin.

timeisnotaline · 30/06/2021 00:48

@Peregrina

I was staggered to see how many bin cleaning services there were. I had no idea people had their bins cleaned. I think we have washed our grey bin out once in about 20 years.

I don't think CF neighbour will try that one again, but you had better make sure your drive doesn't have the hint of a weed growing on it.

They should let the weeds go. It’s their driveway. It’s not a crime to have weeds. Can just say snottily when neighbour points out the mess- actually while for example having a bin is a service we pay for, owning our house is outright land ownership and there’s no obligation to weed. Someone at council should be able to explain these concepts to you.
BritMommyAbroad · 30/06/2021 03:38

Best thread ever 😂
Honestly though, this guy sounds like a character from little Britain. Typical, holier than thou Tory councilor acting like a self appointed gate keeper of the street and he’s really just a cheeky little thief who’s happy to steal what other people have paid for. But at least he’s true to his party values.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 30/06/2021 04:43

Only just got to this thread - brilliant

I hope you have now painted your house number on with gloss paint, with the glow in the dark 2 fingered salute as well!

Of COURSE he was a tory, of course he was.

Well done your DH!

Marriedatfirstyear · 30/06/2021 09:42

@xprincessxjanetx

Just had a thought I wonder if the bin he has now is his original bin and last week (or whenever) he switched them then so his original bin would get a 'free' clean and now he has switched them back
Hmm, could be he puts swaps his before cleaning day and takes it back. Too much time on his hands 🤣
frg124 · 30/06/2021 11:09

This thread just keeps giving. On a tangential note, not all of us Tory voters are light-fingered and selfish neighbours... I love my neighbours. Mind you, they're probably also Tories so maybe that doesn't count...Wink

buckeejit · 30/06/2021 11:23

@OchonAgusOchonOh they're all Prod. It's very odd & couldn't believe I'd reached my 40s before knowing these people are around me!

I like my bin dirty but generally wouldn't pay someone to do something myself. Went to buy a palette of reclaimed bricks t'other day & guys were a bit arsey about me taking them in the car as they'd have to charge me more. Couldn't understand when they were saying it's more work so we'd have to charge more. When I said it's more work for me but no different for you as I'd be putting them in the car, they said 'oh alright then' 😒

SmellThat · 30/06/2021 11:23

I'm picturing a small man with a tach , am I close @JackieWeaversAuthorityHere ?

myleghurts · 30/06/2021 11:44

I would wait until next bin cleaning day and definitely film what happens and then post on local Facebook page to shame him. CF
I would then paint my number on the bin and also under the lid.

myleghurts · 30/06/2021 11:54

I pay £2 per bin worth every penny as its disinfected as well. I know I could do it myself but I wouldnt be bothered. It also gives employment to the two man team who do them.

tallduckandhandsome · 30/06/2021 11:56

We have white gloss on our bins, still as bright many years later.

OhRene · 30/06/2021 12:04

Thanks to this thread I have now found out why my mother in law shook her head and tutted at seeing my toaster out on the countertop. I also got a bit of a telling off for having it. Apparently I should use the grill. She's an Irish Protestant so I guess that's why.

@JackieWeaversAuthorityHere do you think the idiot is CFer enough to do it again or do you think your DH has nipped this in the bud now? Personally I would get a discreet camera on it for next time, and if you're friends whit the people across the road, enlist their help too. Catch the CFer on camera. He is stealing a service other people are paying for. A politician through and through. Catch him in the act and let the press find out.
