We pay a company to clean our bins once a month on bin day. I’m not usually home when they come, but I’m off work today And happened to be in the kitchen. I watched my next door neighbour wait until the cleaner left, take the house number sticker off my bin and put it on his, then swap our bin for his so he had the cleaned bin and I had a non-cleaned one.

He was back in his house before I had time to contain the dog and go outside but now DH is home, WIBU to go round and ask for my bin back??

@LookItsMeAgain

My chin is well and truly on the ground with this one. It ticks so many boxes -
  • Tory Councillor
  • bin stealing
  • it's not stealing as it's not really yours anyway
  • a DH keeping his cool and managing to outwit the bin stealers.

Make sure to get some permanent markers or paint and paint the number of your house on the inside of the bin lid and on the base of the bin itself.

They are cheeky feckers to be sure. Do keep us posted on any fall out from this.

I'd love to know how many other times Councillor BinStealer has stolen your freshly washed bins in the past?

So would I! DH said this morning that thinking about it, the bin stickers have been curling at the edges for a while but he assumed it was the heat from the bin cleaning melting the glue.

I fear we may never know.

I haven't read the whole thread.

Am I the only one here who has never cleaned or had cleaned her wheelie bin?

Coming up 16 years now ...

Nope - same here. Moved in to this house in 2012 and it's never been washed but isn't stinky either, which is impressive considering the amount of cat litter, etc, that's been in there over the years.

Bin smells were my only cause of nausea during pregnancy so I can see why you might want it to be cleaned ideally by someone else

These NDNs are great, aren't they? An endless source of fun with their cheeky batshittery Grin

Gilly12345 · 29/06/2021 08:49

I would go around and surprise him with the news that you witnessed him being a CF and ask for your bin back.

Paint your house number on your bin

BlackSwan · 29/06/2021 08:53

‘wheelie bins are council property not personal property’
I'd report him to the council now. He should be fired.

Okcookie · 29/06/2021 09:01

My husband thought the council cleaned the bins cause he'd seen them being done. I told him you have to pay for it and he was surprised.

Maybe neighbour got fed up thinking the 'council' kept missing his bin?

category12 · 29/06/2021 09:15

My wheelie bin is my personal property, I bought the fucker. My council doesn't provide bins.

MrsMackesy · 29/06/2021 09:27

Just coming back to say he's probably technically right about the council owning the bins as I remember once reading that on our council website, even when we've paid to replace a lost or damaged one. The bin is linked to the address not the person, sometimes even with a serial number or code, so you would leave it behind when you move. However that doesn't give him the right of course to swap your professionally cleaned bin for his dirty one, even swapping your stickers over, just because he and/or Mrs Eyebrows fancy it. He seems to be confused by 'bins property of council' with 'bins property of this particular councillor.' It is such a small thing but so entitled and dishonest that it makes you wonder what else he/they are up to. Do they have, for example, pampas grass?

Mutt is a giveaway to me even without looking, but my lips are sealed and will remain so - as opposed to pursed. Wink

mustlovegin · 29/06/2021 09:29

Are you sure you did not mistake the person for someone else? It's difficult to believe that a councillor would expose himself in this way. Maybe you hold a grudge against him because he's a Tory?

It's also weird that he thought he could get away with this as it's obvious you would complain to the company and he would not be able to do it again.

Odd, if you ask me

TroysMammy · 29/06/2021 09:31

In his eyes you may not be the owner of the bin but you are the custodian.

Grin So you think a local councillor may have thought his own council cleaned the bins, then thought his was being missed, so rather than ringing them to find out, he went to the bother watching when the bins were being done, rushing out when NDN's bin had been cleaned, peeling their numbers off, replacing the numbers and claiming it as his own.....

Okaaayyy then

Okcookie · 29/06/2021 09:32

@TopBlogger

Obviously I should have RTFT

MrsMackesy · 29/06/2021 09:32

*He seems to be confusing 'bins...'

LettyLoman · 29/06/2021 09:32

This is the stuff of local newspapers. Ring them to get a reporter sent out. Before you take stickers off take a picture of you looking glum in front of your bin. Casually mention neighbour is part of Boris' gang. You could have such fun..

She should have proof before accusing someone, don't you think? Or should everyone go about cancelling Tory politicians for the sake of it?

TeapotCollection · 29/06/2021 09:34

OP please tell us who he is? PLEASE 😁 it’ll be all round your town now anyway

Oh and go your DH 🍺

Yes, that would seen logical

lardylegs123 · 29/06/2021 09:36

That's so shit of him. You could have ended up sacking your cleaner over this!

Petronius16 · 29/06/2021 09:42

Such a fun thread! Thank you OP.

Time to let the front garden go wild in the interests of wild life. Hanging baskets by front door, leave untouched through the winter. An old mattress might be a step too far though!

OP saw him do it and he admitted it to her husband. How much more proof does she need?
Watchingyou2sleezes · 29/06/2021 09:50

On the subject of bin cleaners

A lot of operators are scruffy dossers illegally polluting the rain water drainage system. If your bin cleaner just allows the run off (by tipping the bin up in the street) into the drains please stop using them. Only use cleaners that catch their run off into tanks.
