To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

wildthingsinthenight may I be so bold as to recommend Cult Pens for your Ink Pen? They are a terrific bunch of people with an array of pens and inks (and more besides). I think MN even has a board called something like The Stationery Cupboard which you might enjoy dipping into (with your hand sharpened quill or something....)

AiryFairyMum · 25/06/2020 17:49

I see what you mean, and there was no offense intended. It's tricky though isn't it, as these products aren't really from a bygone age. Loads of people clearly still buy them these days, it's just that most of those people are older (and female). I accept not everyone, but that's the key demographic. There may be loads of men in their 20s buying Yardley and 4711 for themselves, but the association is with mostly older women.

Rose scented talcum powder
Frank Sinatra
Cats

missclimpson · 25/06/2020 18:10

Yes I do remember a friend having a crochet mini dress. 😀

wildthingsinthenight · 25/06/2020 18:23

HawthornLantern thank you for the pen recommendation! The Stationary Cupboard sounds like somewhere I need to be too..

lockdownalli · 25/06/2020 19:10

@MusicianTom

My feet are wide and flat and I buy shoes from M&S wide fit.

Lola001 · 25/06/2020 19:35

What's on everybodies old lady shopping list this month?

wildthingsinthenight · 25/06/2020 19:38

Already got some violet shower gel and Nesti Danti hand soap.
Still looking for an ink pen and lilac cartridges and I'd like to look for some second hand copies of Daphne's diary magazine on Ebay Smile

alwaysreadyforablether · 25/06/2020 20:37

I've just ordered some Nesti Dante lavender shower gel. Will use it in the evenings to help me sleep.

SirVixofVixHall · 25/06/2020 20:49

I have just placed my regular order for 4711 soap as I have run out. I also ordered a little tube of soap that you can carry in your handbag, from L’Occitane.

Nothing modern is as good as vintage Irish linen tea towels featuring stately homes, country scenes, ships, national heroes etc, brought back from holiday as gifts for granny and carefully stowed away. They come up on ebay but less and less frequently. On the other hand, in daily use they last many years before becoming dusters. Makes me smile just thinking about my well-filled tea towel drawer.

SirVixofVixHall · 25/06/2020 20:56

MusicianTom
I got some very pretty sandals from Gabor last year. (I also have wide feet with a high instep). Chie Mihara are on the wide side if you want to splash out. Clarks have the odd nice thing. Some Toast shoes are wide.

PeskyRooks · 25/06/2020 20:57

I'm looking to buy
A butter dish
Some sugar tongs
Embroidered tray cloths
Yet another Damart cardigan
Also some crystal candlesticks after someone mentioned them earlier!

MsRinky · 25/06/2020 21:30

My Doreens arrived today! Came downstairs wearing a bra for the first time in months, husband looked at me as if he couldn't quite work out what was different, before concluding "you look...perky"

Have been merrily alternating between rose and lavender talc, so lovely in this sticky weather.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 25/06/2020 21:43

My greenhouse is hopefully coming in a fortnight.
It will have a hanging basket rail so I'm trying to think of nice things to have trailing down that might survive the winter.

Considering some airplants in terraria type things maybe.
But I would love something that smelled nice.

I have now become so obsessed with roses that I can reel off characteristics of a fair few.

I'm now looking up nice shoes suitable for people with a high arch and wide feet - thanks for that!

BeaLola · 25/06/2020 21:51

Second Cult Pens - have lots of fountain pens from there - usual Lamy, Kaweco, and others

Re lilac cartridges - Herbin do a very good colour range and they come in lovely little tins too

woodhill · 25/06/2020 21:54

I love my butter dishes - Waitrose did a really nice white china one

BeaLola · 25/06/2020 21:55

Re Stationery also recommend Katie Leamon

Pigeon Post for origami type letters

Quill London fir calligraphy inks

Nellydean21 · 25/06/2020 21:57

Diane Athill is our girl. Read all of her.

wildthingsinthenight · 25/06/2020 22:01

Ooh thank you re cartridges BeaLola

BeaLola · 25/06/2020 22:08

Silver teaspoons, enamelled teaspoons - my DH bought me some from an auction as a Christmas gift - they are beautiful and I use every day.

Proper cocktail shaker and muddler is on my shopping list for next buy.

Jugs - I love a beautiful jug and "collect" them - usually smallish ones - there is something pleasing about their shape

Bluesparkled · 25/06/2020 22:15

I love those tiny enamelled spoons:) Also sugar shakers. And tapioca, though I’m probably on my own in that one.

Binterested · 25/06/2020 22:25

Yes I had a lovely read of Dorothy Whipple's They Were Sisters last year - highly recommend.

I was disappointed to hear Carmen Callil slag of Dorothy Whipple's writing on a podcast recently. Love Carmen Callil and everything Virago ever published so it makes me sad that Carmen doesn't love Dorothy Sad

Chillichutney1 · 25/06/2020 22:42
