To realise I like old lady things

AiryFairyMum · 20/06/2020 15:13

I bought some Yardley perfume for my grandmother and haven't been able to give it to her due to lockdown. I really like it and am going to buy some for me.
Also, I've started looking at those pointy cross-your hearty bras and thinking they look comfy and I quite like the shape, without having to cope with underwires (which I hate).
I'm 37, not 73. Are there any other old lady things I might like please?

33 here and I am an old lady. I like houseplants in nice pots, blankets and cushions everywhere, baking my own biscuits, scones, smelling flowers, tea in a thermos on walks, national trust shops, comfortable flat shoes and skechers at all times, carrying everything with me in my bag 'just in case', glasses on a string so they don't fall off, browsing in libraries and bookshops, listening to radio 4, Agatha Christie books, watching Doc Martin, big knickers and comfy bras, bath salts, sitting in a chair outside in the shade watching the garden birds, playing card games, sun hat or rain hat and big rain coat/ winter coat depending on the weather, day trips to sites of interest, cardigans, people watching, saying 'oh dear' when I sit down, saying hello whenever I see a magpie, listening to the shipping forecast, nice smelling hand cream, bar soaps, pretty tea towels, the 39 steps films, murder mystery plays at the theatre, not wanting to go anywhere without toilets in case I need a wee, watercolours, cooing over all babies, turning down invitations unless it sounds like 'my sort of thing', I would like to join the WI too. Love this thread!

@AndNoneForGretchenWieners that's sad.
My late DH wrote me one a week while we were apart, some of which bordered on the lewd.
When his parents came down to his funeral, his mum asked if she could read them.
I said yes, of course. I wanted her to know that he had been loved as a man, not only as a friend...If you see what I mean.

Kaathesnake · 25/06/2020 13:17

@AndNoneForGretchenWieners

I’m so sorry you don’t have love letters....they can be a source of comfort in your loss. I don’t really look at mine that often as it makes me cry... however they are proper letters, cards and poetry (not rude😱) so my son will have them when I’m gone, which is lovely. We miss his Dd so much, cancer is a cruel, wicked disease. I hope you have some nice photos and memories to help you💐

ppeatfruit · 25/06/2020 13:19

We call our storecupboard , the larder. That's a very old fashioned name, it comes from 'lard"

How lovely to live in a village like that Mitzik and Kaathsnaake I like marrows stuffed with rice! Our village has a strange mix of poorish types, posh Parisians. And a lonely old lady who called them all "Dirty" (which is probably why they don't speak to her) in French of course.

MY mil used to give the children 'jam juice' Grin literally jam mixed with water !!

Kaathesnake · 25/06/2020 13:29

@MitziK

Bolting the doors made not a bit of difference... they got tied to the doorknob!😆 luckily, marrows weren’t a ‘thing‘ by me, it was apples, bloody apples!! I was at home, stewing apples in my early teens when I should have been out, showing off in front of boys😁

I’ve just realised that in my work bag I carry...
Plasters of different sizes
Germolene
Headache pills
Indidestion pills
Hay fever pills
Deep heat
Safety pins
A small sewing kit
Hairbrush & spray
Cough sweets
Old Lady Handbag😱

Our young staff members may think I’m old and slightly strange... but it’s me they come to for help when buttons come off or they have a hangover or sore throat!

I’m known as ‘Mother’ or ‘Wilma’ (Flintstone) as the oldest in the building!

Kaathesnake · 25/06/2020 13:34

@Mummydaydreams

YY to virtually all of your list... I don’t wear my reading glasses on a chain round my neck as my idiot German Shepherd is always pushing for cuddles and gets tangled up. I get round it by having cheap glasses on my head and on every flat surface in the house😃
At work, I just say to whoever’s next to me ‘read that for me’

ppeatfruit · 25/06/2020 13:44

Yes Mummy I wish there was W.I. in this village. I do\I did before lockdown, help with the Food Bank in the nearest town which is good for my French but the W.I would be better Grin

MusicianTom · 25/06/2020 13:49

People who buy wide/comfy shoes, where do you get them? I practically live in Hotter Leanne trainers (extra wide), and own 6 pairs in different colours Blush, and I would love some smarter shoes, esp some Oxford lace-ups. But my feet are stupidly wide and high on the top, and none of the beautiful shoes fit me!

This thread is the gift that keeps on giving!
Now looking for an ink on on Amazon.
I love Radio 4 extra and all the old comedies. Tey to catch the afternoon play on R4 and The Archers too.
Have ordered violet shower gel today too

wildthingsinthenight · 25/06/2020 13:53

Ink PEN!

Mummydaydreams
Your post made me stare off into the distance and daydream! So lovely

mightymalties · 25/06/2020 14:12

BardyMum did your DH granny drink amaretto sours? Made me wonder with the bitter lemon (I love them!). Also, I love brandy, from a proper brandy snifter (which I had to hunt down, they're not so easy to come by these days). And a drop of whiskey in strong, sweet tea...

I haven't seen Daphne's Diary magazine mentioned yet! It's absolutely lovely, sometimes found in Sainsburys/Waitrose, and reminds me a lot of Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady (which I still have in my Amazon wish list, I really should just buy it.

I haunt TK Maxx for lovely bar soaps and rose/lavender scented body treats. Especially the lavender soaps in pretty vintage tins.

Found Badedas in Home Bargains today! Not sure about it yet, but will try in the bath later. I do love Olbas Bath though, it's fab for winter to stave off a cold.

Our local independent department store used to have a fab selection of old perfumes. I intend to stock up once the shopping in town is less busy.

Thanks to all who mentioned Ringtons! So glad to find we're in an area that does doorstop deliveries!

Daphne's Diary magazine sounds perfect! I'd love that.
I have an old copy of The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady that was my mum's. It's so lovely

AdaColeman · 25/06/2020 14:25

If you like "Round the Horne", you might like "The Navy Lark" also. It's a very gentle comedy.

wildthingsinthenight · 25/06/2020 14:39

Help I'm deep down a rabbit hole of Daphne's Diary now! 😂

PrivateSpidey · 25/06/2020 14:53

@Zebracat I love Angela Thirkell, especially High Rising and the Christmas one as well. She's such an underrated writer IMHO, I don't know why she's not as well known as other writers of that period.

I love Josephine Tey's mystery stories as well, same sort of era.

SerendipitySunshine · 25/06/2020 15:29

I like marrows halved and stuffed with ratatouille, roasted then topped with loads of cheese and roasted again. Fabulous!

SerendipitySunshine · 25/06/2020 15:38

As I child I in the 80s always thought that somehow I'd grow into sophisticated ladies' things (cross your heart bras with thick shoulder straps, silk slips the colour of milky coffee, yardley talc, pressed powder, lipstick, setting my hair, frame handbags with a big clip to choose them, thick night cream, heated rollers, court shoes, tan stockings etc). I wanted to be like Margot in the Good Life. Now I realise I can choose thisr things, and there isn't a birthday where everyone gives you these things and a new phase starts.

emcla · 25/06/2020 16:26

Elnett hairspray...just another memory

emcla · 25/06/2020 16:26

And the soft powdery smell of oil of ulay face moisturiser

Zebracat · 25/06/2020 16:51

@PrivateSpidey. Yes to Josephine Tey, and also to Nicola Upson who writes mysteries featuring Josephine Tey. And Dodie Smith.

AiryFairyMum · 25/06/2020 17:18

You are all amazing. My shopping list (written in fountain pen in a flowery hardbacked notepad) is growing by the day. Fabulous! Thanks again.

@PrivateSpidey I adore Dorothy Whipple and cannot understand why she isn't incredibly famous still.

missclimpson · 25/06/2020 17:24

I may be a bit over-sensitive here, but would it be better to replace "old lady" with "from a bygone age"? My granny would have thought a lot of this was pretty fuddy-duddy and she was born in 1883. I am over 70 and would have nothing to do with 95% of it. 😊

missclimpson · 25/06/2020 17:28

Well 75%. There is my user name to take into account. 😂😂😂
