To say no to visiting pigs for Christmas??

PigAuntie · 29/11/2019 18:02

My sister wants to buy my niece and nephew micro pigs for Christmas. They are coming to stay with us for Christmas so she wants to know if she can bring them with her!!!
AIBU to say no because

  • we don’t want pigs running around our house partly due to we have no idea (and neither does she) if They will be chewers/poo everywhere/cry all night plus they are tiny and will be at danger of being stood on
  • we have a 3 bed semi, with 9 people, Xmas tree, extra chairs etc it’s already going to be crowded enough and we don’t have the space to put a pig pen anywhere - the conversatory is already taken over by the guinea pigs cage. (C&C open type)
  • I don’t agree with animals being given as Christmas presents as Christmas is busy and chaotic and full of noise and lights and wrapping paper and choas. I believe a new pet needs to be introduced to a family in a calm and serene environment where they can get used to each other and the animal can retreat to a safe place when they need too
  • I also don’t think any animal should go an3 hour journey unless absolutely necessary or they have got used to car journeys
  • you need a permit to move pigs to another premises and I think are them not allowed to move them again for 20 days!!!
  • Christmas is my favourite time of the year and I don’t want it overshadowed by pigs!
  • we will all be drinking (as is the nature of Xmas day) so I don’t think we should be in charge of tiny piglets when no one knows exactly what they are doing with them.

On a positive note I have found out that DH is the perfect mumsnetter husband, his response was ‘fuck no, that’s all you need to say, just no, don’t need to justify it, we say no that’s it!! So I’m happy to loan him to help people with CF’s!!!

That’s a good point about the daily mail and actually I didn’t name change so wouldn’t want other stuff I posted to be seen by people who know me (this thread is very outing so people will know it’s me and be able to read more personal stuff I post. I will ask MNHQ to delete.
I will name change at some point once I have an update and make sure pigs are in the title!

At work I get to see copies of old 'Leases' from the 60s and 70s. A lot of them have a clause saying something along the lines of 'it's forbidden to erect any x, y, z at the premises with pigsty being one of the forbidden structures! These would be three bed houses with a back and front garden, so similar to your sisters house. Doubt any Council would allow it today either!

wintersweet1977 · 30/11/2019 00:55

It's your house and if you don't want other people's pets in it then they shouldn't be trying to bring them.

mokapot · 30/11/2019 00:58

Yes please so I can see some photos Grin

We had micro pigs. We knew they wouldn't be micro and we took them on as they hadn't sold when tiny so then wouldn't sell as no longer super cute. We also live on a farm. With a defra number and other animals. When they eventually got old and ill and were PTS (prematurely as LOTS of health issues from very dodgy breeding) the man who collected the dead pig said he was the biggest pig he had ever seen - the man who collects pigs all day. The other one looked utterly terrifying - think pigs head on lord of the flies - as to improve their spotting/markings as piglets and make more money they often have wild boar blood introduced. He was huge and hairy with the most enormous razor sharp tusks, and even though he was the softest thing ever he regularly accidently sliced open a bit of human leg coming for a head rub. The children NEVER went in with them as their tusks were child face/eye height. And the non scary looking one would bite. Most of the 'small' parents you see have been starved to stunt growth. If you feed pigs properly they grow. We now have pure bread kune kune pigs who are maybe 2/3 the size of our 'micros' and are still big animals to handle.

I thought the thread about the high chair was peak batshit for Christmas threads but no..... aibu is the thread that keeps giving.
No to pigs as visitors, unless in blankets and oven ready and a wtf to keeping pigs in a house with only a patio. I can't imagine any landlord going for it.

iswhois · 30/11/2019 02:09

Yes please update us PigAuntie as am now worried about the fate of the poor pigs!

iswhois · 30/11/2019 02:10

And I initially thought OP was referring to her in laws when taking about pigs over at Xmas- thought we were in for a good one.

But now very sad and worried about said real pigs Sad

This sounds like the premise for a horror movie!!!!!!!!

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 30/11/2019 03:14

Mumsnet is batshit tonight Grin

Come on landlord! Promise you’ll tell us what they say PigAuntie?

eaglejulesk · 30/11/2019 03:35

I feel so sorry for the poor pigs. Your sister needs a reality check, they are not toys!

Ilovetea33 · 30/11/2019 03:35

I distinctly remember a Dutch film where the farmer's wife was eaten by pigs.

PurpleViolins · 30/11/2019 03:51

FfsShock

Selmababies · 30/11/2019 03:54

An abusive father got fed to the pigs in the recent TV drama 'Gentleman Jack'
Maybe mumsnet HQ could consider getting some pigs that they could loan out when required....

dogcrazy · 30/11/2019 04:30

I’d be very surprised if a landlord said yes to 2 pigs! If I asked my sister this she’d reply “no fucking way”. I’d go with “no, I’m not having them here and it’s a stupid idea getting pigs when you have a small house and garden”.

HicDraconis · 30/11/2019 04:41

That’s not an adult male pig - it’s probably not even a year old yet. They teach sexual maturity around 7-8 months but they grow for around 2-3 years.

A couple of my friends have pet kunekune pigs. They are adorable, they love coming for walks and having their neck scratched. They are also bloody huge. One friend has a farm and the other has enough land that she might as well have one - I would not keep a pig in the conditions she’s describing or that tiny cage. If they don’t outgrow it rapidly then she’s been told to underfed them to keep them small 😢

My son did a week work experience at a pig farm when he wanted to be a vet. We are used to country aromas and smelling of horse wee after mucking out but we made him get out of his work clothes in the shed and then get straight in the shower.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 30/11/2019 07:49

What I don’t get about this abhorrent micro pig trend is that even if the breeder has done something to keep them small - do people not realise they eat loads, shit loads and stink?

WineOrGinOrBoth · 30/11/2019 07:58

I’m absolutely astounded & entertained by your sisters madness all at the same time.

The sane landlord will say no anyway.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/11/2019 08:15

When I was a child we had a gardener who had a pet pig. Used to take it shopping with him on a lead, leave it tied up outside shops.
This was the 1970s - you couldn't do that now without breaking the law.
I strongly suspect he had grown up with pigs and knew what he was doing, also it probably came down to the size/personality of his particular pig. He lived on his own so would have been able to give it the training and attention it needed, this was rural so he probably had more space than your sil. And he only had the one!

yorkshirecountrylass · 30/11/2019 08:23

Not read the whole thread OP so sorry if this has already been mentioned but I assume she has the relevant licences, holding numbers etc... for keeping these
