To say no to visiting pigs for Christmas??

PigAuntie · 29/11/2019 18:02

My sister wants to buy my niece and nephew micro pigs for Christmas. They are coming to stay with us for Christmas so she wants to know if she can bring them with her!!!
AIBU to say no because

  • we don’t want pigs running around our house partly due to we have no idea (and neither does she) if They will be chewers/poo everywhere/cry all night plus they are tiny and will be at danger of being stood on
  • we have a 3 bed semi, with 9 people, Xmas tree, extra chairs etc it’s already going to be crowded enough and we don’t have the space to put a pig pen anywhere - the conversatory is already taken over by the guinea pigs cage. (C&C open type)
  • I don’t agree with animals being given as Christmas presents as Christmas is busy and chaotic and full of noise and lights and wrapping paper and choas. I believe a new pet needs to be introduced to a family in a calm and serene environment where they can get used to each other and the animal can retreat to a safe place when they need too
  • I also don’t think any animal should go an3 hour journey unless absolutely necessary or they have got used to car journeys
  • you need a permit to move pigs to another premises and I think are them not allowed to move them again for 20 days!!!
  • Christmas is my favourite time of the year and I don’t want it overshadowed by pigs!
  • we will all be drinking (as is the nature of Xmas day) so I don’t think we should be in charge of tiny piglets when no one knows exactly what they are doing with them.

On a positive note I have found out that DH is the perfect mumsnetter husband, his response was ‘fuck no, that’s all you need to say, just no, don’t need to justify it, we say no that’s it!! So I’m happy to loan him to help people with CF’s!!!

The breeders web page does say that all males are neutered before sale.

cute baby piggies on christmas day

FurrySlipperBoots · 29/11/2019 23:02

Hahahahaha, she's RENTING?! Well I'm glad the children don't know, because only a landlord batshitier than your sister would agree to it, so it's not going to happen.

I love pigs, they're one of my favourite animals, and the photo of the piglets is adorable, but this is beyond absurd.

PigAuntie · 29/11/2019 23:03

I don’t know where she is going to put all the pig waste? Hay and pig poo? Our 2 guinea pigs create a bin bag of waste (hay, paper, bedding and poo etc and remains of cardboard boxes they’ve chewed) and they are a lot lot smaller than a proper pig!!

Good news about the castration. Although I'm not sure I'd trust a breeder who was so casual about welfare and legalities.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 29/11/2019 23:05

Pigs like to keep most of their living space clean and will choose a corner of their field to shit in. I don't know what happens if there is no field, my experience was limited to just a few pigs and helping my nephew with his. But yes, they are eating machines and what goes in must come out!

DuckonaBike · 29/11/2019 23:06

She is completely stark, staring bonkers. Please, please convince her to get a hamster instead. This is completely irresponsible and really quite cruel to the pigs.

I've read this thread expecting to find it was all a misunderstanding and she meant guinea pigs. I was gobsmacked to see the picture of what are definitely actual pigs! No!

PigAuntie · 29/11/2019 23:07

When we got our guinea pigs (from a rescue and after a year of DD begging for them and once she had researched them and could tell me everything about looking after them etc) the rescue lady came round to check the house, check the cage was big enough, see what the run we had outside was like and showed us how to car for them/cut nails etc.
The breeder is about 1.5 hours away from my sister so I don’t believe for a second that they would be doing a home visit? Unless they ask for photos (which could be faked) they could be told anything about the home environment!

Maybe this is all an elaborate wind up?

I think this is nuts!

I would want to see the piggies though.

PigAuntie · 29/11/2019 23:20

Message between me and DH. Not sure why I’ve blacked out people’s names as I’ve completely outed myself anyway- everyone at mine and DHs work know all about it !!

There are no such things as mico pigs. Your sister in law is mad.

ashtrayheart · 29/11/2019 23:31

No way will landlord agree to pigs 😂

Haffdonga · 29/11/2019 23:33

Not sure why I’ve blacked out people’s names

But so relieved you've blacked out the pigs' names of course. Wink

Loyaultemelie · 29/11/2019 23:37

We bought "micro pigs", boy and girl. They make excellent rotavators, perfect any time we wanted the sheep field or garden reseeded. George was the height of my knee and extremely grumpy if nobody had a carrot in their hand. Jayne was lovely and used to wander in and out of the kitchen during the day and lie in the garden (she could open the gate. Luckily we knew rightly they would be massive, they were bigger than our previous pot bellied. They lived about 10 years, George also hated our seed salesman so we always knew when he was in the yard from the ruckus. I would never want them in an ordinary house with no garden they are hard work and cover a lot of ground if they decide to do a runner oh and they can swim unlike Dh who had to chase George down a river.

MrsToothyBitch · 29/11/2019 23:41

I know fuck all about pigs and even I know that:
a) they eat a lot & make the corresponding amount of crap (although they're clean!).
b) they have a terrifying bite, can be extremely dangerous and can and will kill and eat people.
c) micropigs are never "micro" and daddy pig in that pic is not daddy pig.
d) YANBU to say no. Your sister is a selfish, short sighted fool with no concern for the animals. Hopefully the Landlord kyboshes her ridiculous idea.

BritWifeinUSA · 30/11/2019 00:00

When I read the title I thought the OP was saying she didn’t want to visit pigs over Christmas (as in, her DH had booked a farm stay for all of them and she didn’t want to go). But it’s worse. Much worse.

My DH volunteers three times a week at an animal rescue. They get a lot of cats and dogs and other common domestic animals but also larger animals like horses. These pigs are going to end up in a place like that. The SIL thinks “dog beds in the conservatory” will be enough??? They will destroy the conservatory, not sleep in it.

I’m keeping everything crossed that the landlord firmly says “no bloody way”. Many landlords don’t even allow dogs these days so I’m hopeful that the landlord will refuse two pigs.

Cherrysoup · 30/11/2019 00:01

Hopefully I’ve cropped her name out properly so she doesn’t get hate mail - but this is one of the messages - I haven’t made this up! I’m not sure I have that much imagination to be honest!!

Proper batshit. Does she really believe such a thing exists as micro pigs? Bonkers. You can’t just trek pigs round like you can dogs, it’s illegal.

They will destroy grass/gardens, it will be a mud pit within 2 weeks. My horse is castrated, doesn’t stop him shagging every mare he can mount. Apparently pigs have corkscrew shape penises. Fun fact her dc will soon learn.

Of course the landlord will say no unless they’re a total idiot How could she imagine that a ll would agree to this when most won’t agree to a dog?

FelixFelicis6 · 30/11/2019 00:04

Er you know this will get picked up by daily mail or similar if it hasn’t already?!
