To say no to visiting pigs for Christmas??

PigAuntie · 29/11/2019 18:02

My sister wants to buy my niece and nephew micro pigs for Christmas. They are coming to stay with us for Christmas so she wants to know if she can bring them with her!!!
AIBU to say no because

  • we don’t want pigs running around our house partly due to we have no idea (and neither does she) if They will be chewers/poo everywhere/cry all night plus they are tiny and will be at danger of being stood on
  • we have a 3 bed semi, with 9 people, Xmas tree, extra chairs etc it’s already going to be crowded enough and we don’t have the space to put a pig pen anywhere - the conversatory is already taken over by the guinea pigs cage. (C&C open type)
  • I don’t agree with animals being given as Christmas presents as Christmas is busy and chaotic and full of noise and lights and wrapping paper and choas. I believe a new pet needs to be introduced to a family in a calm and serene environment where they can get used to each other and the animal can retreat to a safe place when they need too
  • I also don’t think any animal should go an3 hour journey unless absolutely necessary or they have got used to car journeys
  • you need a permit to move pigs to another premises and I think are them not allowed to move them again for 20 days!!!
  • Christmas is my favourite time of the year and I don’t want it overshadowed by pigs!
  • we will all be drinking (as is the nature of Xmas day) so I don’t think we should be in charge of tiny piglets when no one knows exactly what they are doing with them.

On a positive note I have found out that DH is the perfect mumsnetter husband, his response was ‘fuck no, that’s all you need to say, just no, don’t need to justify it, we say no that’s it!! So I’m happy to loan him to help people with CF’s!!!

Erm, a pig does not live happily "on a farm or smallholding" by the way.

In response to the thread, YANBU. Is she aware that animals aren't objects?

BBInGinDrinking · 01/12/2019 03:03

This has got to be one of the strangest thread titles, and there's been a few strange ones over the years! Made me snort with laughter at nearly 3am.

This little piggy went to OP's,
This little piggy stayed at home....

lljkk · 01/12/2019 04:25

I thought you had to notify DEFRA to transport pigs anywhere, from A to B. Loads of paperwork. Can't just pick them up and take them to visit someone else spontaneously.

Oh, and not allowed inside homes (legally).
Very special rules about what they are allowed to eat, too.
Read all that in a book by a guy whose family got micropigs (one of the animals turned out to be very not micro).

ElluesPichulobu · 01/12/2019 06:37

an "unexpected" litter of 2 means that they made a mistake with their own piglets and allowed an uncastrated male piglet to stay in with his sisters for just a week or so too long and he got one of his sisters pregnant. There's only 2 because mum is still small herself. dad will still grow to 3 or 4 times his current size as pigs carry on growing for quite a while after reaching puberty. likewise mum will keep growing unless the stress of pregnancy whilst still not fully grown herself gives her such health conditions that she goes for the chop sooner rather than later. these piglets will have additional health needs due to the genetic ramifications of having parents who are brother and sister as well as all the other reasons that this is a terrible idea.

my sympathies op on having the most batshit sister ever.

NearlyGranny · 01/12/2019 06:43

Well, at least she asked first, giving you a chance to say NO in seventeen languages...

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/12/2019 07:22

Giving OP a chance to say "FUCK, NO!", in seventeen languages, NearlyGranny

Pmsl at the fact that sister has asked landlord if she can have 2 pet pigs. I actually can't believe anyone would ask their landlord something so utterly ridiculous. If the OP comes back and says he's agreed we will all know she's winding us up.

Sadly I think there really are people this stupid so probably it's real.

I've always wanted a couple of little pot bellied pigs they are lovely but I don't have a paddock with room for a sty so it isn't really realistic is it?

WhoWants2Know · 01/12/2019 09:24

The photo of the pen that she sent is a duck run. As in, for one or two ducks. Much smaller than pigs.

Motoko · 01/12/2019 11:39

To the pps who think this post is a wind up, OP is a regular poster, and she's posted screenshots of her conversations with her sister, and OP's husband.

Yes, there are people stupid enough to do this.

Bogrod · 01/12/2019 11:40

Your sister is a moron.

TriciaH87 · 01/12/2019 12:12

Tell your sisters she's an idiot. Better to get them a puppy than two pigs. If she says a puppy is too much work point out two fully grown pigs will destroy her home when stuck inside and bored all day. Best look into gifts that anr not living.

PigAuntie · 01/12/2019 12:19

No word from landlord yet and I haven’t mentioned the pigs again to my sister yet but to answer a couple of questions

  • she wants pigs as she and the kids wouldn’t be allergic to them as they are with cats and dogs.
  • It’s definitely not a windup! I’ve had MNHQ change my username as this post is so identifying if you know me in real life so I don’t want me other posts linked to this.
  • I’ve just remembered that one of the reasons she picked her wedding Reception venue was because it had pigs!!

Will update thread when I have news about the landlord or she sends me anymore pig related messages!

My kids are getting these pigs for Christmas. I found them on eBay. Perhaps you could talk your sister into something similar?

NO!!!!!

Not a puppy - not anything which needs care and attention, and someone who understands what the animal requires, rather than what their crackpot idea of what will be ok for the animal is.

You need something that thrives on neglect.

What about a Mayfly? Though it is just heartbreak on the wing as they only live 24 hours. You just get fond of it and it's dead. But it teaches children about the great Circle of Life, and how to cope with bereavement etc.

Possibly.

lljkk · 01/12/2019 17:38

Guinea pigs? Although Tamagotchis might be safer bet.

simonisnotme · 01/12/2019 18:02

my sis in laws brother had got a 'micro' pig but now its a bloody great big pig that practically lives in the house and they cant do a thing with it it does what it wants when it wants .
if ever there was a dumb idea getting pigs is it

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 01/12/2019 19:33

Is anyone else longing to see the landlord’s face when he/she gets a message asking about pigs????

runningintothesunset · 01/12/2019 21:58

@Endspeciesism of course pigs can live happily on farms and small holdings! Ours live a very cosseted life, have a very large field, a wallow, a dry warm shelter that they snooze in and company. They’re healthy and live very long lives - how are they unhappy? I accept not all pigs get such a great life, but please don’t assume all pig owners keep them indoors

QueSera · 02/12/2019 08:58

Is your DSis on glue?

tillytrotter1 · 02/12/2019 12:01

Are you serving pork?

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 02/12/2019 13:01

@Mumoftwoyoungkids - Oh yes, I would pay good money to be a fly on the wall when the landlord gets that message 😂

PigAuntie · 02/12/2019 13:07

@tillytrotter1
yes we are serving ham with christmas dinner as well as pigs in blankets!!

Your sister is a tit. They don’t stay small, she will probably get rid of them as soon as they grow up which is just cruel.

leckford · 02/12/2019 13:14

I think theses do not stay ‘micro’ very long. It is a stupid present to give, unless the person wanted them. Investigate how big they get
