Which is the tastiest Protestant traybake?

1000 replies

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 08/03/2019 17:35

NI Protestants are famed for their tray bakes but which is the best traybake of all?

I’m thinking something crunchy and chocolatey, a tiffin like thing. But are there unchocolatey traybakes that I just haven’t been exposed to? Are they keeping all the best recipes to themselves, strictly to be eaten behind closed doors?

And does it get a bit competitive? Does Annie cast aspersions on Doris’ traybaking abilities?

Oh, where are you @ElevenOhFive? They look great!

fivedogstofeed · 13/03/2019 14:52

Oh whojamaglip I used to make those as a kid! No idea where to find a recipe, but exactly the same as cheesecakes just with a coconut meringue top - absolutely gorgeous!!

S1naidSucks · 13/03/2019 15:00

Did anyone see the NI news item a few weeks ago about the calorie content of scones?

FAKE NEWS! said in best Donald Trump voice

Don’t you come on here talking about calories! That’s the kind of thing you worry about AFTER you’ve eaten the scone!

@DioneTheDiabolist, @S1naidSucks
factcheckni.org/facts/can-a-scone-equal-a-third-of-recommended-daily-calories/

Thats prob what you were talking about. (Il get my coat as have just mentioned calories) See ya

ElevenOhFive · 13/03/2019 15:30

@MadeinBelfast those are from 3 Kings in Portstewart - lots of people in watching the stormy sea today. It is related to the Bob & Bert’s chain, so the exact same scones and tray bakes - you had quite rightly commented a few pages back that the quality of B&B’s can be variable, and I have definitely found this particularly with the savoury food. That said, their scones have never let me down yet!

MadeinBelfast · 13/03/2019 15:57

Thanks @ElevenOhFive, I'll add that to the list of places to visit next time I'm up that way. I'm already planning a trip to Panky-doos but I'm sure I can try both in the same day Grin

FlaviaAlbia · 13/03/2019 16:19

That sounds like a macaroon topping whojamaflip?

ElevenOhFive · 13/03/2019 16:38

@MadeInBelfast if you can manage to book the afternoon tea for PankyDoos it is amazing and great value for money - they are always booked months in advance though, so worth planning ahead! Dora’s in Portrush also has great cake

fivedogstofeed · 13/03/2019 17:02

@whojamaflip I just went to the Post Office and guess what they had on the counter? Smile

whojamaflip · 13/03/2019 17:29

Fivedogs that's them!! You star Thankyou Thanks

whojamaflip · 13/03/2019 17:30

At least I can have a go at making them this weekend and dh (English) will finally know what I've been talking about Grin

MaidofEyes · 13/03/2019 18:20

@Cuch - oh bugger. Although I'm luckily only IBS not coeliac so can be a little less careful. What about Cruchies?

3out · 13/03/2019 19:18

@AuntVanya I think the answer would be just to eat the mixture straight from the bowl. For your friend, of course ;)

I’m doing bedtime. How late at night is acceptable to start making fifteens (considering I have the dentist tomorrow 😂)?

isabellerossignol · 13/03/2019 20:03

I was in the shop tonight and stumbled across a box of tophats. Tophats! £1.99 for half a dozen of them. With hardly any chocolate.

Never was there a more apt purchase for the phrase 'they saw you coming' Shock

missmoffatt2705 · 13/03/2019 20:17

Try the Bero recipe for rich coconut tarts - looks similar to the one fivedogs posted

londonerinleith · 13/03/2019 20:50

It is only now that I realise I've never seen my dad or any of my other NI Catholic relatives eat a tray bake!
Based on family baking preferences, I surmise that Catholics go for scones and fruit cakes. Also anything containing desiccated coconut.

Who knew?!

MulticolourMophead · 13/03/2019 21:09

Being Midlands born and bred, this has been a real eye opener. Lovely recipes and I'll be trying one or two at the weekend.

AuntVanya · 13/03/2019 21:12

@3out I suspect you're right. I'll pass on the advice.

Have you made some tonight??

Celticrose · 13/03/2019 21:22

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar I can also recommend Grounded in Newry. They do a traybake like caramel squares but also has peanut butter. I cannot eat a whole one and usually bring whats left home for later. Their coffee is very good. It is beside the Canal Court hotel.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/03/2019 21:27

Thanks Celticrose, I'll definitely pop in there. I'm a coffee snob aficionado so it's always nice to know that the coffee is good in an unknown place.

3out · 13/03/2019 21:36

I’m too tired :( Instead, I’m going to treat myself to some from the local shop after I’ve been to the dentist tomorrow 😂
