Which is the tastiest Protestant traybake?

1000 replies

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 08/03/2019 17:35

NI Protestants are famed for their tray bakes but which is the best traybake of all?

I’m thinking something crunchy and chocolatey, a tiffin like thing. But are there unchocolatey traybakes that I just haven’t been exposed to? Are they keeping all the best recipes to themselves, strictly to be eaten behind closed doors?

And does it get a bit competitive? Does Annie cast aspersions on Doris’ traybaking abilities?

NI protestant here C of I though not a great traybake tradition although I do remember my mum baking German Biscuits. My speciality is mint aero traybake but only for special occasions.

I do have a pic of the Creative Gardens fifteen though - Bushmills branch!

Can't imagine being able to buy Fifteens in a shop!!!!! I'm now thinking of a summer holiday Traybake Tour of NI, putting together a route made up of the shop/ cafe/ churches recommended on this thread.

DuggeesWoggle · 14/03/2019 07:00

Love the photo ademanlu - the knife and hand for scale! Are all fifteens that huge? I thought they were supposed to be smallish balls but perhaps that is dainty in protestant traybake land Grin

I bought 9(!) bars of cheap Aldi white chocolate yesterday, going to make some malteser squares at the weekend, need to get some malteser first. And some cheap milk chocolate too. And some condensed milk. Gotta get that in there too...

caringiscreepy · 14/03/2019 07:52

I keep rereading this thread like some kind of traybake fetishist. The good old WI cookbook is coming out this weekend and I'm making fifteens. Cutting down on sugar diet be damned

I’m in Scotland Aunt. We’ve got a lot of nice ‘ traybakes’ on sale, but we don’t have anywhere near as many scone variations as NI from what I’ve learned on this thread! So I’d stick with NI for your culinary sweet treat tour!

Celticrose · 14/03/2019 08:21

&BlackAmericanoNoSugar There is another coffee place called Finnegan and Son ((I think the two are connected) which is a cafe brew bar. It is on a corner on Kilmorey St. Near the town hall. You can ask for directions. They are very serious about their coffee

Celticrose · 14/03/2019 08:22

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar meant to hold that sorry

FeminismandWomensFights · 14/03/2019 08:36

Love this thread. Definitely up for a traybake tour!

That must be a very thick crust of kitkats!

fivedogstofeed · 14/03/2019 10:56

Whaaat? I live in the mid west bible belt Tyrone and Grape and Lime ring is a step too far even for me Shock

tenbob · 14/03/2019 11:07

eve
There must have been a glut of cheap grapes and cream cheese in NI in the 80s, because those are the mainstays of FAR too many ingredients

AuntVanya · 14/03/2019 11:08

@3out I have to confess ( see, I'm a Catholic), I'm no fan whatsoever of a scone. Perhaps a Traybake Tour of Scotland would be just as delicious, without requiring a flight or ferry crossing.

fivedogstofeed · 14/03/2019 11:14

I'm still not over orange in carrot jelly, and beetroot in blackcurrant jelly Envy . Or in fact jelly at all......

3out · 14/03/2019 11:15

As a Scot, I’d suggest scones should be left how they are - plain, fruit or cheese (but that might be the Presbyterian in me 😂).

I think the tourist boards are missing a trick here! There is clearly a market for sweet-toothed directed holiday marketing!

Celticrose · 14/03/2019 11:55

I really miss Baxters beetroot in redcurrant jelly. Have they discontinued it? Typical anything that I really really like this is what happens to me. It was delicious with pork and egg pie

EdtheBear · 14/03/2019 12:24

Can somebody clarify is the veg in jelly thing, like rowntrees jelly or jelly as in jam?

At first I thought jam but now I'm not so sure.

fivedogstofeed · 14/03/2019 12:32

The type of jelly you buy in cubes and dissolve in boiling water :)

fivedogstofeed · 14/03/2019 12:56

@celticrose very much still around and you can even buy from Baxters direct !

EdtheBear · 14/03/2019 13:25

Cheers for that clarification fivedogs. I know they talk about hiding veg so kids will eat it. But in jelly just takes it to a whole new level!Smile. Do the kids eat it with ice-cream??

Now I have to confess to have made that type of jelly with a wee bit vodka. Does that count as hiding pototesGrin

fivedogstofeed · 14/03/2019 13:27

ooh no, not with icecream - jelly with veg is part of a Protestant salad :)

EdtheBear · 14/03/2019 13:36

OMG Now you got meGrin

Eve · 14/03/2019 15:06

tenbob that recipe is just hideous - kitkat and margarine on top of jelly and cream cheese Envy

That delicacy is from the Elim Missions charity cook book circa 1985!

beanaseireann · 14/03/2019 15:34

Could you Northern Ireland ladies please give us the definitive tour of cafes to visit for delicious tray baked goods, scones or cakes in NI.Smile
Although if there's a hard border and I require a green card to drive in NI it might impact my trip for a while.
