Which is the tastiest Protestant traybake?

1000 replies

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 08/03/2019 17:35

NI Protestants are famed for their tray bakes but which is the best traybake of all?

I’m thinking something crunchy and chocolatey, a tiffin like thing. But are there unchocolatey traybakes that I just haven’t been exposed to? Are they keeping all the best recipes to themselves, strictly to be eaten behind closed doors?

And does it get a bit competitive? Does Annie cast aspersions on Doris’ traybaking abilities?

i have never heard of a protestant traybake! I only clicked to see what the typo was, only it's not!

Ffsnosexallowed · 08/03/2019 18:02

Hard to beat a pineapple delight.

funnystory · 08/03/2019 18:03

@LadyGregorysToothbrush that's exactly what I was thinking, they missed another good one liner there!

I’d be make a terrible Protestant. Never made a tray bake in my life. Might as well keep the toaster on the worktop where it belongs Grin

I also clicked to see if this was one I had missed off the blackboard Grin

PhoenixBuchanan · 08/03/2019 18:04

Also clicked just to see WTF this was about. Hilarious! The things I learn on MN.

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 08/03/2019 18:05

@loveshinealight I was joking!

SrSteveOskowski · 08/03/2019 18:10

Well I'm a (col)lapsed Catholic, so I probably shouldn't be nosing on this thread at all, but personally you can't beat Nigella's malteser traybake. Goes down a treat with Catholics and Protestants alike, oh and my friend's Muslim husband was quite keen on it too. It's definitely a good alrounder.

shiningstar2 · 08/03/2019 18:16

Had the best tray bake ever at my 93 year old MIL'S care home. Full of glazed cherries and flaked almonds. Never tasted any traybake since which came close. Delish!! Wish had the recipe.

What are fifteens?

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 08/03/2019 18:19

is this your mint aero tray bake broomstick ??

JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/03/2019 18:20

oh and my friend's Muslim husband was quite keen on it to. Well if that isn't a recommendation I don't know what is Grin

Think I might have to look up the recipe for that one. At the moment the most exciting thing I do with maltesers is smash them and sprinkle over vanilla ice cream 🍦

Theyellowsquare · 08/03/2019 18:20

I was brought up in a very religious protestant household and have absolutely no knowledge of these tray bakes. I feel conned. To be fair there were plenty of families in our church where you wouldn't want to accept a glass of water let alone home cooked munchies 🤢

wowfudge · 08/03/2019 18:22

recipe for Fifteens. Who knew. I too clicked on this thinking "wtf"!

Disfordarkchocolate · 08/03/2019 18:24

My favourite traybake recipe but I replace the raspberries with dark chocolate chunks and miss off the flaked almonds. It's even nicer the next day. www.olivemagazine.com/recipes/baking-and-desserts/raspberry-custard-cake/

caffeinebuzz · 08/03/2019 18:24

Toss up between Fifteen and a Malteser bun. Now you've made me want to make tray bakes. There goes the diet!

S1naidSucks · 08/03/2019 18:24

NI catholics don’t like tray Bakes?! OMG, I’m going to have to take my youngest for an exorcism, aren’t I? Confused Sad

Chocolatepeanuts · 08/03/2019 18:26

Shiningstar i think that WAS a fifteen!!!Grin although im a Catholic so what do I know. I just eat them im not sure what goes IN them lmao.

Singerleon · 08/03/2019 18:28

Best part of a Protestant funeral ... the traybake selection in the church hall after Blush

Cocolepew · 08/03/2019 18:29

I knew the first answers, would be fifteens, they're rank.
I'm seconding the rice krispie and mars bars traybake. It's bloody lovely.

ChicCroissant · 08/03/2019 18:30

I also thought it was some kind of autocorrect error, have bookmarked the fifteen recipe for a few year's time when DD loses her braces!

Disney2 · 08/03/2019 18:32

Traybakes are not really a Catholic "thing", at least outside of NI. Irish Catholics are more into porter/fruit cakes, brown bread and fruit tarts 😉

Bowchicawowow · 08/03/2019 18:32

My favourite traybake is Tottenham Cake which is a Quaker traybake. The icing sugar is made pink by the berries picked off the Mulberry bush outside their Quaker House. I am a Catholic Confused

PaintBySticker · 08/03/2019 18:32

I’m a Protestant (ish) who grew up in England but married a man from NI. Can confirm there is an NI Protestant traybake culture that just doesn’t exist in England.

The local Centra sells a nice one with maltesers but I guess it doesn’t count if not homemade.

3out · 08/03/2019 18:32

I’m not sure if NI is different to Scotland in the traybake stakes, but you can’t beat a Malteser traybake, surely?
Love a fifteen.
The best cookbooks are the ones made in the 80s or earlier for fundraisers. Woman’s Guild, local hospital, local playgroup mums’ etc. Traybake gold dust.
