Which is the tastiest Protestant traybake?

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 08/03/2019 17:35

NI Protestants are famed for their tray bakes but which is the best traybake of all?

I’m thinking something crunchy and chocolatey, a tiffin like thing. But are there unchocolatey traybakes that I just haven’t been exposed to? Are they keeping all the best recipes to themselves, strictly to be eaten behind closed doors?

And does it get a bit competitive? Does Annie cast aspersions on Doris’ traybaking abilities?

DH occasionally jokes that we are not passing on any Protestant traditions to the dc.
So I made some Fudge Squares ( as per recipe upthread - thankyou! ). Now I have heartburn. although maybe fudge squares for breakfast wasn't the best idea.
There's a lesson there.

Summerhouse Protestants are basically all Christian denominations who aren't RC. They protested and broke away from Roman rule. Then had loads of break away sections as they each interpreted the bible differently.

Sorry didn't mean to make this thread too heavy.Smile

Where can I get hold of a WI baking book?

FlaviaAlbia · 17/03/2019 09:59

Don't forget the Eastern Orthodox church, they split off from the Catholic church before the reformation and I'm pretty sure it split again at least once since the original schism.

Yes, sorry, that's what I meant but obviously didn't say clearly enough! I've been to a Russian Orthodox service once, 4hrs long and no seats or traybakes, that's hardcore Grin

Alienspaceship · 17/03/2019 11:02

Why didn't I click on this thread earlier? 🍰

EdtheBear · 17/03/2019 12:13

FlaviaAlbia - 4hrs and no seats - my legs would be achingShock. You'd been needing a tea and traybake after that
This thread really has been an education.

FlaviaAlbia · 17/03/2019 13:23

I know! As far as I remembered we made our way to the back and out after about an hour. There were some seats around the edges tbf but only the very elderly were using them. Made me appreciate the luxury of pews Grin

beanaseireann · 17/03/2019 13:39

Do Protestants in NI celebrate St Patrick's Day ?
Would there be lots of traybakes ?

fivedogstofeed · 17/03/2019 14:24

Oh gosh no. Definitely no Protestant traybakes for St Patricks Day ShockShock

FlaviaAlbia · 17/03/2019 14:37

There's a St Patrick's Day party at my mum's Presbyterian church today. There is stew, and many many traybakes Grin

SleepDeprivedCabbageBrain · 17/03/2019 14:43

Ofc we celebrate Paddy's. It's a public holiday in NI.

Redpriestandmozart · 17/03/2019 15:33

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/03/2019 15:40

A Cream Cookie! I didn't know they existed until just this second and now I want one ... desperately. (Although, picky me, that jam doesn't look very high quality, definitely not home-made.)

Cocolepew · 17/03/2019 15:41

Oh I love a cream cookie 😍, syrupy jam and fake cream. Has to be good for you.

Ah but that is part of the traditional Cream Cookie, the bun part is light and fluffy, the cream is a synthetic (but gorgeous) and the jammie bit is like the syrup you would get on a 99 poke!!!

Doza · 17/03/2019 15:46

Dropped two traybakes inspired by this thread off at our GAA clubhouse this morning for the post St Patricks day parade feeding frenzy Grin
Not in NI anymore though!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/03/2019 15:55

Synthetic cream? Shock In one of the most productive dairy regions in the world? What kind of monsters are you up there?

Mendingfences · 17/03/2019 15:59

That cream cookies looks very much like a Norwegian fastelavnsboller

Redpriestandmozart · 17/03/2019 16:02

Well on the subject of Cream Cookies, I also bring you Ditty's Iced Cookies ;)
