Which is the tastiest Protestant traybake?

1000 replies

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 08/03/2019 17:35

NI Protestants are famed for their tray bakes but which is the best traybake of all?

I’m thinking something crunchy and chocolatey, a tiffin like thing. But are there unchocolatey traybakes that I just haven’t been exposed to? Are they keeping all the best recipes to themselves, strictly to be eaten behind closed doors?

And does it get a bit competitive? Does Annie cast aspersions on Doris’ traybaking abilities?

Maid I’m nicking that Rocky Road idea, I also need to avoid wheat

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 11/03/2019 22:23

@Happyspud I've google caramelitas and they look mouthwatering, but they do involve some baking. Worth it by the looks of things though! Grin

I'm loving this thread ! I've saved several recipes 😋

I feel very left out as Irish catholic & remember many a bake sale after mass on a Sunday but no tray bakes !

Now living in Scotland & this is by far my favourite tray bake from here

@FlaviaAlba - I didn’t get to speak to her (I got sidetracked until it was too late) so I will ring her tomorrow, promise!

ChristmasSeacow · 11/03/2019 23:53

SDT I’ve been hovering in hope too Grin

lifelongfrugaleer · 12/03/2019 06:14

I need to go to the after mass gathering on Sunday instead of dashing home to check out the goods.

Cuch · 12/03/2019 07:16

MaidofEyes put the Maltesers down!! They contain wheat! (Coeliac here doing public service announcement)

FlaviaAlbia · 12/03/2019 09:21

Thanks SDTG! Grin

Im not sure how I feel about this.

I feel very negatively towards anything Creme Egg related. They are an abomination.

MrsJayy · 12/03/2019 11:49

Creme egg anything is just claggy sweetness and bleurgh.

S1naidSucks · 12/03/2019 11:58

Eve

It’s in Whiteabbey on the Shore road. I advise getting there early, because it can get shockingly busy. It’s done like an old fashioned tea shop, with proper chairs. The best seats are on the left, as you go in the door. By the window and really comfy seats. There’s usually a race to those two particular ones. 😁

Cream eggs in scones seems very wrong to me. Like seeing David Attenborough in bondage gear.

I just have to point out the irony of these thread disparaging anything at all as "claggy sweetness and bleurgh" Grin but I agree, they are so so highly overrated.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/03/2019 13:58

I've just emailed mum to ask her for the lemon fudge squares recipe - I'll let you know as soon as she replies.

I was talking about this thread to ds3 (age 21) today, and mentioned the apple and mars bar sandwich - and he was moved to wonder whether it would be nice if toasted in a toastie maker, and dredged with a bit of icing sugar. I said I'd ask.

FlaviaAlbia · 12/03/2019 14:19

I'm never going to be able to look at David Attenborough again. Eesh.

I'm going to go with I doubt it SDTG but he could follow Dino's example and give it a go Grin it might not be terrible...

MrsFudge · 12/03/2019 14:57

This thread is brilliant - blatant placemarking so I can steal some of the recipes later :)

MargoLovebutter · 12/03/2019 14:59

Cocolepew I cannot actually believe they are real!!!!!!! I don't know how anyone can eat a creme egg at all, let alone one surrounded by cake or pastry!!!!!! Shock

I'm from SE England and either I'm shopping in the wrong bakeries or stuff like that just isn't a thing here at all - ever. (Which I know means you are now going to tell me that you took a photo of that creme egg creation in Dorking!) Grin

caperplips · 12/03/2019 15:00

This thread is fascinating!
Are the flavoured scones really scones? They look more like cinnamon swirls or danish pastries, sort of. What is the texture like?

I visit Belfast sometimes and would like to know the best place in the immediate city centre to try such delicacies - fancy scones and traybakes??

Cocolepew · 12/03/2019 15:08

Definitely not Dorking Grin
My mum used to make drop scones on the griddle they were flatter.
My brother lives in England and his wife is fascinated by how many bakers and butchers we have over here.
She also ordered a padty supper from the chipy and was horrified by it. She thought it would be like a Cornish pasty.

FlaviaAlbia · 12/03/2019 15:15

Definitely scones and not pastry caperplips

In the city centre, I usually head to the bakery in Fountain street straight out the back door of boots, or one of the Ground cafes - there's one in next and one in Waterstones.

FlaviaAlbia · 12/03/2019 15:20

That's for traybakes btw, I can't think of anywhere there for scones really.

I just remembered though, this should give you an idea of flavours, check out the speciality scone list here itssconemad.com

ConfusionIsNothingNew · 12/03/2019 15:40

Not sure if anyone has yet mentioned Jackson's in Ballyclare-they're traybake selection is epic.

Cocolepew · 12/03/2019 16:29

Cafe Uno used to lovely scones but I haven't been for a few years, I'm not even sure if it's still open.

Cocolepew · 12/03/2019 16:31

I just checked FB it is still going.
