Just had an argument with a friend... is there an actual species called Wombles or were they made up creatures?

Thank you

I thought the song meant 'common are we' as in not very posh. I was a dopey child.

Thoth · 13/05/2018 08:00

I know someone whose parents took them womble hunting when they were little, and as his parents were such upright and proper people, he believed they were real for years, bless.

Actually, my phone just corrected 'womble' to Wimbledon, which was a bit odd.

LynetteScavo · 13/05/2018 08:09

Of course Wombles are real.

So are wombats.

I think that's where you're getting confused, OP.

One is native to the UK, the other Australia.

AdaColeman · 13/05/2018 08:17

Of course they are real, and here is the proof, each year they go on holiday to the South coast and spend their hols whitewashing the White Cliffs.

Candyflip · 13/05/2018 08:18

I grew up in Wimbledon. Of course they are real.

SilentBob · 13/05/2018 08:20

Yep, very real. Common, in fact.

hettie · 13/05/2018 08:22

I'd love a womble...can I adopt one?

ThreeLeggedCat · 13/05/2018 08:22

Clearly they are real. Otherwise my Mum wouldn’t have taken us hunting for them on Wimbledon Common so many times would she???

AsAProfessionalFekko · 13/05/2018 08:25

The flumps aren't really (thank God) but the pogles and the clangers definitely are.

EastMidsGPs · 13/05/2018 08:26

Hettie

I don't think you can adopt only one - they are sociable creatures and need to live in groups

QOD · 13/05/2018 08:28

Hahahahahhahahahaahhahaahhahahahaaaa

Are Wombles real??
GinIsIn · 13/05/2018 08:33

There’s also the cock womble. Those are definitely real.....

infertilitybitch · 13/05/2018 08:41

@QOD going for a record? Grin

ScreamingValenta · 13/05/2018 08:43

Yes, they're absolutely real. There are womble colonies all over the world, including giant wombles in the Himalayas.

Despite a similarity of name, they're not related to the cock wombles referenced by Fenella. Though Bungo could be a bit of a dick at times.

Neolara · 13/05/2018 08:44

Yes, definitely real. One ran past me in the London marathon. Bloody fast actually.

Candyflip · 13/05/2018 08:44

Fekko are you insane? I have a family of flumps at the bottom of my garden. Annoying little feckers, yes, but definitely real.

JillJ72 · 13/05/2018 08:48

They are real. They tidied up at our school when I was little.

Makinglists · 13/05/2018 08:54

Yes they are real - i think I have a few living in the back of my wardrobe. I havent seen much of them since the late 1970Å¡ - i think they are hiding.
On a more serious note I think there was a radical eco group who called themselves wombles (they are not at the back of my wardrobe)

PanPanPanPing · 13/05/2018 09:18

It's not just the tennis folk who have problems with them, the golfers also have problems with them. In fact each of the golf clubs there have to employ a designated Womble Warden - at great expense, I might add.

ScreamingValenta · 13/05/2018 09:20

@PanPanPanPing They need to try spraying some Womble Repellent on the grass.

PanPanPanPing · 13/05/2018 09:23

I don't think they're allowed to.

QOD · 13/05/2018 09:25

@infertilitybitch maybe! 😂

TopBitchoftheWitches · 13/05/2018 09:27

fenella

I was just going to post similar about the very real cockwomble Grin

Anasnake · 13/05/2018 09:28

Of course they're real, as are the Flumps and Chorlton and the wheelies.
