Just had an argument with a friend... is there an actual species called Wombles or were they made up creatures?

Thank you

I suspect JRM of being Great-uncle Bulgaria.

HebeMumsnet · 15/05/2018 12:06

Good morning, Womblers. We're moving this to Classics now. And in celebration... One more time...

They are real cos' I saw them landing in a helicopter in the early 80's.

One of them had matted fur. Think it was Orinoco.

what disturbs me is they were whisked away by Jimmy Saville, but it was the 80's and he was best mates with the Royal family then

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 15/05/2018 16:26

Yay! Have a wombling merry Tuesday everyone!

GreatUncleBulgariaWomble · 15/05/2018 17:39

I am deeply honoured to find this thread has wombled into Classics.

My Wimbledon Wombles and I will be celebrating with a breakfast of daisy cream buns, toadstools in moss sauce and Madame Cholet's extra-special fermented dandelion broth.

Thank you, Mumsnetters ... and remember, remember, remember you're a Womble!

Bulgaria Coburg Womble.

Happy days.

AvoidingDM · 16/05/2018 07:10

Do Wombles have fur or hair?

I've always thought hair rather than fur.

reallybadidea · 16/05/2018 07:37

They have sort of coarse hairy fur. Sort of a cross between a Labrador and a cocker spaniel in texture. I used to have a pet one as a child before I realised it was cruel and released him back into the wild.

TheWomblerReturns · 16/05/2018 21:00

@reallybadidea thank you for being a responsible Womble owner.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 16/05/2018 21:01

They have hair more like a rough collie, I think you’ll find. Like Lassie.

DoryNow · 16/05/2018 23:41

Yaayyyyyy classics thanks MNHQ!!

Love the video, Orinoco is STILL my FAVOURITE!

Gammeldragz · 19/05/2018 11:28

Tyne I always thought that, now I know! To be fair, I didn't know there was a Wimbledon Common when I was a child as we had never been to London. Just never questioned it since.

couchparsnip · 19/05/2018 13:52

They are Definitley Real. When I was little we used to drive past Wimbledon Common and my parents would see loads of them. They were always too quick and hid before I could spot them but I swear I saw Uncle Bulgaria's cape disappear behind a bush once so it must be true!!

fucketynamechanged · 19/05/2018 16:00

I'm bloody offended there were no Wombles at the royal wedding. For a diverse wedding there was a noticeable lack of Wombles

OP posts:
PanPanPanPing · 19/05/2018 17:20

I think there were a few there, fuckety. It's just that we couldn't see them as they went incognito. Perhaps they were hiding in the Quire with the choir? Or for those of the congregation who wear wigs, then maybe the wigs were actually Wombles?!! Or they managed to hide under the long skirts/robes of the clergy?!

Shockers · 20/05/2018 10:10

The chapel was an absolute tip after the wedding guests had left; water bottles, fag ends, broken parasols, a pair of round, pink spectacles ...

Who do you think tidied that lot up?

DoryNow · 20/05/2018 10:11

Bet they were there, hiding on the Long Walk in the bushes to watch the parade!

mumtoaboywhosgreat · 20/05/2018 17:37

@Shockers I agree, must have had Wombles servicing the royal wedding

DoryNow · 20/05/2018 20:37

Maybe that's why the American Bish kept jumping around ? He was getting tickled by a WombleGrin

Shockers · 20/05/2018 20:59

I’d like to be tickled by a womble...

@fucketynamechanged

"People don't notice us
They never see
Under their noses
A womble may be"

Windsor was crawling with wombles. We just didn't see them.

PanPanPanPing · 21/05/2018 10:39

Perhaps that's why one of the horses got spooked?!

Meckity1 · 21/05/2018 12:47

They are trying to teach us their ways
