Just had an argument with a friend... is there an actual species called Wombles or were they made up creatures?

Thank you

As a child not familiar with London place names I mangled it even more. I thought it was a person singing that line and that it said "the wombles are Wimbledon, common are we" i.e. wombles are rare, Wimbledon must be a synonym for rare seeing as the next part was saying that people are common

fucketynamechanged · 13/05/2018 01:36

I didn't even think of google either Blush

Endangered species now, plastics not helping. Find your inner womble.

I would have thought bettybaggins that the over polification of plastic rubbish would absolutely help wombles, just think of all the stuff they could use it for.

Carrying the othef rubbish they collect
Storing things in the bottles
Using the bags for clothes
......

One of the few if not the only creature helped by plastic rubbish.

ohfortuna · 13/05/2018 01:52

wombles can eat plastic, their gut bacteria contains organisms which break it down
the gut bacteria in question are thought to originate in a species of moth which is able to digest plastic

they also shred it up and weave/'knit' it into clothing and textiles for their burrows

As a child I desperately wanted my very own Wombling bag. A white bag with a large red W on it for collecting the things the folk leave behind.

Sigh.

ohfortuna · 13/05/2018 01:54

thats the wombles not the moths, moths obviously cant knit whereas wombles have an oppose-able thumb

memaymamo · 13/05/2018 01:58

I thought the song was about common, prolific wombles too!

x2boys · 13/05/2018 02:06

remember your a womble!

crabb · 13/05/2018 02:07

You're not alone, OP.

WelshWitch7 · 13/05/2018 02:07

Of course Wombles are real, so are the Clangers

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 13/05/2018 02:29

Although my head tells me Womble & Sooty, Sweep & Sue, Santa too are not really real......
My heart tells me otherwise.
So yes they are real!
(Explain how Sooty always gets me with his water pistol. DD & I have seen him 3 times. Once with Richard & twice with pet sitters other presenters.
And no I don’t always sit in the front row.....learnt the hard way.....& don’t have a sign on me saying ‘Sooty water me’ )

BlushingCrows · 13/05/2018 02:35

Clangers are an endangered species. Long live the Clangers

Nakedavenger74 · 13/05/2018 02:37

@TyneTeas same here! Probably because my grandmother regularly used the word common to refer to most things (patent leather shoes, sandwich shape, not wearing a hat, fork alignment, calling it a scullery, wall to wall carpet, riding in the front seat of a car, wearing a coat indoors, owning rodents as pets, watching itv...)

DiscombobulatedWomble · 13/05/2018 02:41

We are most definitely real.

SadieHH · 13/05/2018 02:51

I was brought up in Wimbledon, they're absolutely real.

dorothyparka · 13/05/2018 06:37

Definitely real - I was overtaken by a womble in a marathon once

FlamingGoat · 13/05/2018 06:52

Definitely real. I met one recently in Scotland on holiday. He was visiting his old uni friend in Loch Ness.

OdileDeCaray · 13/05/2018 06:53

I met Madame Cholet when she and another Womble came to the opening of a newsagents circa 1975!

Mcolll's I think it was and the high street was mobbed!

Eastpoint · 13/05/2018 06:59

They even appeared on the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 as the it’s very poor quality sadly.

YesitsJacqueline · 13/05/2018 07:04

Maybe the OK was thinking of a wombat

OdileDeCaray · 13/05/2018 07:08

Why is there a load of filth added on here?

wombles.wikia.com/wiki/Wombles_Wiki

Op, I wonder if you have got confused about the fictional Wombles and the real Wombat?

YouStacey · 13/05/2018 07:08

There is a law firm called Womble Bond Dickinson, so at least one of them branched out from refuse collection

MixedHerbs · 13/05/2018 07:12

Those of you sniggering about Scottish Wombles have clearly never read The Wandering Wombles. There is a sizeable contingent of MacWombles living at Loch Ness and indeed the Loch Ness Monster is proven to be a Water Womble, her train of humps being baby Water Wombles following their Mum.
You "Wombles are not real" people belong over with the flat earthers.

MrsDilber · 13/05/2018 07:32

Tobermory was recently spotted. Headline on the bbc news so it MUST be true.

Are Wombles real??
CaptainKirkssparetupee · 13/05/2018 07:38

They are real stop motion puppets.
