Because they are 'that good'? I realise different songs may affect people differently Smile

I have lots:

The last part of Do the right thing, Simply Red
The last part of Light my fire, Will Young
The whole of Sandstorm, Darude
The chorus of Love Love, Take That
The chorus of The Flood, Take That
The whole of Praying for time, George Michael
The whole of Sing Hallelujah, Dr Alban
The last chorus, to the end Confusion, ELO
The last bit, to fade, Rise, Gabrielle
All of Don't You, Simple Minds
All of Shine, Years and Years
All of Paradise by the dashboard light, Meatloaf
All of Home By The Sea, Genesis

Just off the top of my head Smile

Lyrics
Heaven can wait
And a band of angels wrapped up in my heart
Will take me through the lonely night
Through the cold of the day
And I know
I know
Heaven can wait
And all the gods come down here just to sing for me
And the melody's gonna make me fly
Without pain
Without fear
Give me all of your dreams
And let me go along on your way
Give me all of your prayers to sing
And I'll turn the night into the skylight of day
I got a taste of paradise
I'm never gonna let it slip away
I got a taste of paradise
It's all I really need to make me stay
Just like a child again

Heaven can wait
And all I got is time until the end of time
I won't look back
I won't look back
Let the altars shine

And I know that I've been released
But I don't know to where
And nobody's gonna tell me know
And I don't really care
No no no
I got a taste of paradise
That's all I really need to make me stay
I got a taste of paradise
If I had it any sooner you know
You know I never would have run away from my home

Heaven can wait
And all I got is time until the end of time
I won't look back
I won't look back
Let the altars shine

Heaven can wait
Heaven can wait
I won't look back
I won't look back
Let the altars shine
Let the altars shine

Baker street blues its the saxophone solo as well as the words;
"Another year & you'll be happy
but your crying your crying now "

mumsastudent · 24/08/2018 22:51

& this version of the sound of silence -

Vitalogy · 24/08/2018 22:52

Baker Street is flippin fantastic isn't it!

I meant to post the link to Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. Get your tissues ready Sad

Vitalogy · 24/08/2018 22:54

I agree, Disturbed version is best.

2ducks2ducklings · 24/08/2018 23:04

Tears in heaven by Eric Clapton gets me, as does Cats in the Cradle, that one just fills me with such guilt about how we're doing as parents.
Also, Baby Mine from dumbo, 'from your head down to your toes, you're so loved goodness knows' if ever there was a song that sums up the feeling I had when my children were born it is this.
'When she loved me' from Toy Story 2.

I went through a long and drawn out breakup with the bitter end coming just after Christmas, while working in a shop with Christmas music on constant repeat. Almost all Christmas music reminds me a bit of that time, but David Essex A winter's tale is the one that takes me straight back there:

It was only a winter's tale
Just another winter's tale
And why should the world take notice
Of one more love that's failed

Serving all the happy Christmas shoppers and trying not to sob every time it came on.

Slipping through my fingers -ABBA
What happened to the wonderful adventures
The places I had planned for us to go
Well, some of that we did, but most we didn't
And why, I just don't know

After every school holiday I feel like there are so many things we've not done and hate that empty house feeling when they go back to school, who knows what I'll be like when they leave home.

Stay on these roads - A-ha
The cold has a voice
It talks to me
Stillborn by choice
It airs no need
To hold.
Old man feels the cold
Oh baby don't
'cause I've been told
Stay on thes roads
We shall meet, I know
Stay on my love
We shall meet, I know
I know

Listened to this after having a miscarriage, will always remind me of the child I never got to meet.

If you can watch the video for this without feeling it you are already dead

Bowling For Soup - "When We Die"

I know that it's early
And it's too hard to think
And the broken empty bottles, a reminder in the sink
But I thought that I should tell you
If it's not too late to say
I can put back all the pieces
They just might not fit the same

There's nothing worth losing
Especially the chance to make it right
And I know that we're gonna be fine
And the tattooed mistakes are gonna fade over time
As long as we live and time passes by
And we won't get it back when we die

I know it's been years now
And I don't look the same
And the hopes and dreams you had for me you thought went down the drain
And the room looks so empty where my pictures used to be
And I can't say that I blame you
But you can't blame me

There's nothing worth losing
Especially the chance to make it right
And I know that we're gonna be fine
And the tattooed mistakes are gonna fade over time
As long as we live and time passes by
And we won't get it back when we die

Come over, come over 'cause I gotta know
If I am doing this all on my own
Come over, come over; how can I tell you if you're not here?
And I know that we're gonna be fine
And the tattooed mistakes are gonna fade over time
As long as we live and time passes by
And we won't get it back when we die

And I know that we're gonna be fine
And the tattooed mistakes are gonna fade over time
As long as we live and time passes by
We won't get it back when we die

Come over, come over, whoa-oh-oh
Come over, come over, whoa-oh-oh
Come over, come over

I gotta know
Won't get it back when we die
I know that it's early

Tom Rosenthal and Rae Morris - all of them dreams.

It was used on a beautiful blog by the michalaks during the birth of their son. It made me so emotional. When I suffered a miscarriage I listened again and cried for both the beautiful birth video the michalaks filmed, and for the baby I wouldn’t have. It brings both joy and sadness to me.

Happinessisabook · 26/08/2018 09:43

I have a few

Never grow up - Taylor swift. I listened to it alone in my room after my parents dropped me off at university and just sobbed. These bits especially
"But don't make her drop you off around the block, remember that she's getting older too"
"I just realized everything I have is someday gonna be gone"
"So here I am in my new apartment, In a big city, they just dropped me off, It's so much colder than I thought it would be, So I tuck myself in and turn my nightlight on, Wish I'd never grown up"

My little girl - Tim McGraw
"Chase your dreams but always know
The road that will lead you home again
Go on, take on this old world but to me
You know you'll always be my little girl"

You can let go now daddy - Crystal Shawanda. The whole thing, I first heard it just after my dad had been diagnosed with aggressive cancer with a low survival rate (He survived thank god) and it just broke me.

Handbags and gladrags - stereophonics. My grandad worked so hard his whole life to give his children and grandchildren a better life than he had so the lyrics just hurt a little.

And not necessarily the lyrics (although they do get me) but more the video for Avril Lavigne when you're gone. The bit with the old man just absolutely kills me.

TheMotherChip · 29/08/2018 20:17

I’ve a severely disabled DB and “he ain’t heavy, he’s my brother” makes me so sad thinking of how much we love him how he is but so desperately wish for his sake his life could be different.
“I’ll be home for Christmas” always got to me from a young age. The thought of not being with your family.
Inxs- never tear us apart
George Michael - praying for time
Glen Campbell - Wichita lineman

AntsDeck · 31/08/2018 21:46

How lovely to see that there are still more added Smile

vetoncall yes! I love that song.

Mine would be - "ill take the medicine, you take the credit, this thing could get the better of you if you let it, hold on I'm not finished just give me a minute, my everything looks so much nicer with you in it".

Kills me. My sister was so fucking sick and then died so young, she needed more time.

TallDad1974 · 01/09/2018 01:15

I understand im a Dad and this is a Mumsnet page but check this...

iklboo · 01/09/2018 14:42

Dads are welcome @TallDad1974 - there's loads on here Smile

Hyperbolesoul · 08/09/2018 15:58

I haven't been able to listen to Urban Hymns by The Verve in 19 years without tearing up.

CrossFlannelCherry · 10/09/2018 00:55

This one for my mum who was widowed young and raised 5 children without the love of her life by her side always makes me cry...
Mother doesn't know where love has gone,
She says it must be truth that keeps her feeling strong.
See it in her face that's turned to ice,
And when she smiles she shows the lines of sacrifice. (Spandau Ballet, Through the Barricades)

Coldhandscoldheart · 10/09/2018 01:18

Magnificent girl by Elbow
Lots of others, but I think that’s my motherhood song.

WinterIsComing84 · 11/09/2018 00:17

Hurt by Johnny Cash gives me goosebumps every time.
KD Lang's version of Hallelujah.
Fast Car by Tracey Chapman
The Weakness in Me by Joan Armatrading

itswinetime · 11/09/2018 00:26

Not at all I watched wicked not long after my gran (who was a massive part of my
Upbringing) died and the song for good broke me in particular

It well may be That we will never meet again, In this lifetime, So let me say before we part, So much of me, Is made of what I learned from you, You'll be with me, Like a handprint on my heart

Because I wish I had the words to say this to her while she was alive

TheVanguardSix · 11/09/2018 00:31

Reckoner by Radiohead

The part where Thom Yorke sings 'Because we separate like ripples on a blank shore' and then the song just takes off into something exquisite.

SecretWitch · 11/09/2018 00:57

Since it is 9/11, May I respectfully add The Rising by Bruce Springsteen

Sky of blackness and sorrow (a dream of life)
Sky of love, sky of tears (a dream of life)
Sky of glory and sadness (a dream of life)
Sky of memory and shadow (a dream of life)
Your burnin’ wind fills my arms tonight
Sky of longing and emptiness (a dream of life)
Sky of fullness, sky of blessed life

Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight!

Yourenotcrazyitsyourmother · 17/09/2018 03:22

“Losing love is like a window in your heart, everybody sees you’re blown apart. Everybody sees the wind blow...”

Yourenotcrazyitsyourmother · 17/09/2018 03:24

Anything and everything by Sam Cooke. He could read out a shopping list and it’d break your heart.

scotx · 17/09/2018 03:58

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine

and

So for once in my life
Let me get what I want
Lord knows, it would be the first time

Yes...I like Morrissey!
