Aibu to think this doesn't make sense (behind my back)

Having an argument with Dh about this, I say the phrase "behind my back" doesn't make sense because if something was behind your back surely it would be in front of you?
I'm getting more and more irate trying to explain my point and only dogs and dolphins can hear me
Am I right?

No. You're completely wrong. The back of your back faces outward. Anything behind you is obviously behind your back. How is that hard to understand Confused

tccat · 14/08/2017 21:58

Grammar even, oh the irony

If someone stands behind you, your back is in front of them. They are still behind you and your back.

TattyCat · 14/08/2017 22:01

Change 'back' to 'spine' and you'll be fine.

Rey2216 · 14/08/2017 22:01

This thread reminds me of the time a colleague spent the best part of an entire afternoon arguing that Newcastle should be part of Scotland because according to him, it's closer to the Scottish border than England.

DappledThings · 14/08/2017 22:02

So if the phrase was "behind the back of my body" it would make sense to you? Because then you would understand your back to be one side of your body and not a separate entity?

eurochick · 14/08/2017 22:02

Have you been at the prosecco?

Oswin · 14/08/2017 22:02

I totally get what your mean. Your wrong like but I get you.

Your back doesn't have a front or a back. It is just the back of you.

Your DH is right, you are wrong. If I am saying something behind your back, I am standing behind your whole body, you have your back to me, and where you can't see or hear me. Hence treacherous (a bit like stabbing you in the back - you won't see or hear me if I stab you in the back).

MaisieDotes · 14/08/2017 22:06

So what do you think people are doing when they "go behind your back"?

Your back is the back of your back ffs.

diddl · 14/08/2017 22:07

"Yes it's behind me but it's not behind my back"

Hahahaha!

MrsCK · 14/08/2017 22:07

If someone was stood behind you, would they be behind your neck?

user7841794168 · 14/08/2017 22:08

They are facing your back but they are not in front of it.

I know what you mean because if you are facing a wall you are in front of it but the term behind your back is relative to you, you are saying that they are behind your back; just like over your shoulder is behind you.

shakeyourcaboose · 14/08/2017 22:09

Bloody hell! Some times the logic people dream up scare me! Your back having it's own front...
and thanks @LG93 will now be having dark lord nightmares!! 🙎🐍 (actually watched HP tonight!)

Rey2216 · 14/08/2017 22:09

Anecdoche, I have no idea?! No amount of logic would dissuade him.

tccat · 14/08/2017 22:09

Yes yes yes see you're getting it now !!

tccat · 14/08/2017 22:11

Maisie my back doesn't have a back though , it's just my back

noodleaddict · 14/08/2017 22:13

If someone is behind you they are not in front of your back. Your back is in front of them

In front of something means close to the front of. Therefore nothing is in front of your back, except your front Smile

user7841794168 · 14/08/2017 22:13

Your back does have a back, it's the back of your rib cage and shoulder blades, the front of your back is inside you. Only parasites can be in front of your back....

fridayrain · 14/08/2017 22:14

Gives the saying "when your back is turned" a whole new meaning..
