Aibu to think this doesn't make sense (behind my back)

Having an argument with Dh about this, I say the phrase "behind my back" doesn't make sense because if something was behind your back surely it would be in front of you?
I'm getting more and more irate trying to explain my point and only dogs and dolphins can hear me
Am I right?

If the police asked you to place your hands behind your back where you you put them?

And if by your logic your back has a front and a back why does it face the opposite way to your front? The front of your back is the side inside you that you can't see (side facing front and the back of your back is the the outside bit.
(Does that even make sense?!gConfused

OP, the human body DOES NOT HAVE TWO FRONTS. Where are eyes are is our front. A car's behind is always the back of the car. A person standing past the back of a car is ALWAYS BEHIND IT. A tree growing in the back yard of a house is always behind the house. Honestly, this is not difficult.

anotherquoll NOTHING is in front of your back because your back doesn't have eyes.

Unless you do have eyes on your back, in which case, as you were!

notevernotnevernotnohow · 14/08/2017 21:39

I think OP must have eyes in the back of her head. It's the only explanation!

IloveBanff · 14/08/2017 21:42

AnUtterIdiot I don't think that's going to help tbh. In the OP's mind the back garden is in front of the back of the house. She seems to imagine her back has eyes and is looking at what is behind her, rather than thinking like a normal personthat her back is part of her and what is behind her is behind her back too.

Actually, I reckon we are all in front of our backs?

I think its funnier that people say 'then he/she turned around and said..', as if they had been talking to someone who had their back to them up to that point..maybe thats a sign they were talking being that persons back Grin

tccat · 14/08/2017 21:48

Banff, the back garden is at the back of the house, it's not behind the back

Your poor husband.
You could watch the news instead?

cardibach · 14/08/2017 21:49

OP I think what yo mean is your back is in front of them. It's about point of view. If someone is behind you, looking at your back, then your back is in front of them. From your perspective, with your perception coming from the front, they are behind your back.

IloveBanff · 14/08/2017 21:50

If you think of the back wall of the house as the back of it, where is the back garden? In front of the back of the house or behind it?

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 14/08/2017 21:51

You're wrong, OP. It makes perfect sense grammatically.

I'm not going to bother to explain why because everyone else already has and you're still not getting it so there's no point.

It depends on which way your back faces. If you say that the front of your back faces away from you, then you are right. If the back of your back faces away from you, then your husband is right.

tccat · 14/08/2017 21:53

Yes it's behind me but it's not behind my back

OP posts:
tccat · 14/08/2017 21:54

But my back doesn't have a back just a front, oh my god my head is sore 😂

'a plane further away than the dorsal surface'

There are some smart people on MN!

I love the number of people who have patiently explained why the OP is wrong, using examples!

Miss molly if I had feelings they'd be hurt 😀 I get the concept of the saying, it's the grannies I have issue with

Ok, I think I get what you're saying. You're viewing as if your back is facing away from you? A bit like Voldemort/professor quirrell in Harry Potter

This is wrong. Your back is non-directional. It is not facing its own direction. The front of your back if it had to have one would be touching your muscle/spine etc. The back of your back would be the external skin. If something was behind the sofa you'd say it's down/behind the back of the sofa. Not it's in front of the back of the sofa.
