Aibu to think this doesn't make sense (behind my back)

Having an argument with Dh about this, I say the phrase "behind my back" doesn't make sense because if something was behind your back surely it would be in front of you?
I'm getting more and more irate trying to explain my point and only dogs and dolphins can hear me
Am I right?

Why would something behind you be in front of you?

MaidOfStars · 14/08/2017 20:53

No, you are wrong. As a developmental biologist with a keen understanding of the strict rules regarding body axes descriptions, 'behind your back' would mean 'a plane further away than the dorsal surface'.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/08/2017 20:53

put your hand up

now put your other hand behind it

now imagine hand 1 is you and hand 2 someone else

they are behind you and your back

MumsOnCrack · 14/08/2017 20:54

I know what you mean, but if you say behind a wall, you don't mean in front of it.

MumsOnCrack · 14/08/2017 20:55

If it was behind the back of my back, you'd be right

chestylarue52 · 14/08/2017 20:55

I never understand when people say 'I don't care what you say about me just say it to my face instead of behind my back'.

Personally I'd rather you said it behind my back where I can't hear it and it doesn't bother me.

Wheresthattomoibabber · 14/08/2017 20:56

Think of it as something being further back than your back.

tccat · 14/08/2017 21:00

I'm still not getting it! something behind your back is in front of you, if you said behind my front you'd mean your back in why is the reverse not true
I'm scrambling my own brain

Your poor husband. He must be pulling his hair out.

notevernotnevernotnohow · 14/08/2017 21:03

I really hope you don't drive.

MelsMam · 14/08/2017 21:03

It's a figure of speech, FFS, it's not meant to be taken in the literal sense.

Lol.

HaPPy8 · 14/08/2017 21:04

I get you OP ......

Thing about how your ears face - forward to catch sounds.

If something is said behind your back you aren't meant to hear it. Behind your back (literally and actually) is the other side of your shoulder, out of sight. I'm perplexed a what is confusing you.

MaidOfStars · 14/08/2017 21:10

if you said behind my front you'd mean your back
Yep, this is true.

in why is the reverse not true
Because you're not reversing the direction of reference.

Start at the front.
Move your point of reference behind your front to your back.
Now move your point of reference behind both your front and back to the sofa/headboard/wall.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/08/2017 21:10

I get what you mean but trust me when I say you're wrong. Make your husband a drink. I'm sure he needs it.

Glumglowworm · 14/08/2017 21:13

Your husband is right and probably very frustrated

Thing of someone standing behind you. They are behind you and your back.

tccat · 14/08/2017 21:14

Alternative, I'm sure he would be pulling it out if he had any left to pull
We're actually laughing at the ridiculousness of it but I'm still convinced I'm right 😀

Yes if they are standing behind me they are behind me, but they're not behind my back, they're in front of it

Stand with your arse against a wall, standing straight up. Now the wall is behind your back. Your back is the back of your body and the wall is further back again.

Talking behind someone's back though means saying nasty things about them without them knowing.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 14/08/2017 21:16

You are still wrong! Why don't you believe us?

Elephant17 · 14/08/2017 21:20

You are wrong but this is hilarious! What a funny way of thinking.

I have these sort of debates with my partner regularly. He is eternally wrong, much to his dismay!

April241 · 14/08/2017 21:22

This is hilarious! I get what you're saying though but it's wrong.

When you sit on the couch it isn't in front of your back is it?

IloveBanff · 14/08/2017 21:23

Your back is part of you. Anything behind you is also behind your back.

tccat · 14/08/2017 21:23

The wall is at my back, it's not behind my back because if it was it would be in front of me 😂😂
This makes perfect sense in my head
