Anyone lost this? On my backstep if it's yours!

So. Just come in through my back gate to find this on my doorstep....anyone missing a pigeon? Not your average bird, well looked after, has got ring etc but bloody thing won't let me get close enough to get details.

It's currently attacking my pots in hope of food. Am assuming due to high winds been blown off course and is knackered. I have chucked some food out on back step (randomly had some milled linseed in...once a Girl Guide, always a Girl Guide Grin) and shut in Sassycat (cos that wouldn't end well...I'd be hoovering up feathers for weeks!!!)...

So...anyone think they've lost something today? Or have suggestions of what I could do with it? Confused

So pleased Gazzie has her perch 😃

FWIW I'm travelling Weymouth to Chichester Thurs or Friday so could help relay.... A few of my clients will be going home to London on Sunday evening...

Or, can't he go on the train? Don't they travel in the guards van or something in a picnic type hamper? I remember seeing a film (probably in b&w) about it 😂

Chickenagain · 06/06/2017 14:58

I mean she!!

BillyDaveysDaughter · 06/06/2017 15:00

Aarrrggh I drive all over the country for work but this week only right down here in the south - and next week only up to Oxfordshire, and I'm stuck there for 3 days. If only I had been going from Portsmouth to Derby or something this week, I could've taken part in the relay...

SassynSane · 06/06/2017 15:04

Ok my closest town is Bristol....so not near Weymouth...but I could drive out a bit further east to meet up either with chicken or anyone else who wants to help? I know she's just a little Pidge but wouldn't it be great if we could do this? Yes yes, I know....entirely soppy Sassy! Wink Right gotta go do school run...be back later....

This takes me back to when I was a whipper snapper in the late 1950s. My Granfer raced pigeons and they would be sent off in a wicker basket by train to wherever they were to be released.

By the earliest they could be expected back I would be at the pigeon loft with him watching the sky. The hours I spent doing that!

One day a pigeon appeared really early and landed on the loft roof. I remember my Granfer being really excited, that bird was so early he was in with a chance of being the winner. Trouble was that darn bird had other ideas, it took 2 hours to entice him into the loft so my Granfer could take the ring from his leg and put it into the clock. Didn't matter how early a bird landed, until the ring was in clock and time recorded it didn't count.

That bird got a right telling off and then a good feed and water!

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuck · 06/06/2017 20:25

I'm in Fulham but no car. If someone could get her to a tube station I could do the last leg.

SassynSane · 06/06/2017 22:13

Thanks EDBD, really sweet of you!! But I may have a solution. Been out at mtg this eve and someone there is going to London on Saturday (well Surrey but pretty close) and if can't sort relay then she's happy to get her as close as poss and do a release and then the last bit will be up to DGazzie! And hopefully by Sat she'll be fully rested and had enough food etc to make the final flight herself...so I think that'll be our plan.

So looks like I will have my little garden guest a while longer Smile Just been out to tuck her in (change paper, clean water etc) & she's looking happy and healthy...will keep you updated on how she does over next few days and will see if owner will let me know if she gets back safely on Saturday so I can share that too...

But for now, from DGazzie-towers, goodnight! Grin

I found an injured pigeon in an alleyway when I lived in Scarborough, I took it in my yard so cats couldn't get it and put a box over it. ended up staying months, I used to buy birdseed for it and even when it could fly again it still came back for meals. It would tap on the outside door. I didn't mind but it started to bring its friends and more and more were coming. Had to stop feeding him after that. Felt guilty as he probably never knew why I stopped feeding him. Once had the door open in the summer and a seagull was sitting on the back of the settee when I went into the lounge.

SoupDragon · 07/06/2017 07:09

Whereabouts in Surrey?

SassynSane · 07/06/2017 07:35

DGazzie wishes all MNtters a very happy Wednesday and says good morning! Smile

Soup, New Malden, so only be a few miles as the erm, pigeon, flies back to the Olympic Park area. Plan is for friend to release from her parents garden. But if weather not great on Sat aft they'll hang onto her and release when better. I'll msg her owner later to see if that all sounds ok Smile

Have you told her she's going home yet? What was her response?

UrsulaPandress · 07/06/2017 07:49

What a lovely thread

Anyone remember the MNetter that had a tame crow? (Not Stratters but on one of her Mortimer threads). They would go out into the garden and call it down from the sky to impress visitors.

SoupDragon · 07/06/2017 07:52

Ah, New Malden is Greater London rather than Surrey. not far from me

Had it been Surrey I could have collected him and released him from a view point in Croydon where you can see across London :)

SoupDragon · 07/06/2017 07:53

And those look suspiciously like "Pots to Go" dessert ramekins!

SassynSane · 07/06/2017 07:59

Blush busted! Grin

Not broken it to her yet Ursula....will have to take it slowly I think because going NC for us both is going to be very difficult Sad

OP posts:
SassynSane · 07/06/2017 08:00

Sorry right...see the NC thing is already throwing me off balance! Confused

ShelaghTurner · 07/06/2017 08:09

My mum is in New Malden. Want me to deliver to Croydon?

SassynSane · 07/06/2017 08:16

I'll msg owner later Shelagh and see what he says but hopefully she'll be ok released there. Right gotta get on...school run and work today...will update on what DGazzie's owner says later...

(I hope DGazzie won't get too lonely without me today Wink)

SoupDragon · 07/06/2017 08:30

New Malden is marginally closer to Gazzie's home than Croydon anyway I think. The least faffing about is probably better for Gaz really.

SoupDragon · 07/06/2017 08:31

Wouldn't it be funny if she flew back to her new home rather than where she's meant to go!

ShelaghTurner · 07/06/2017 09:09
Grin

I can see it now. Gazzie is sent merrily on her way.... Sassycat is finally allowed out to play and comes back 5 minutes later, with Gazzie as his lunch 😱

TimeIhadaNameChange · 07/06/2017 09:32

So pleased to read this update, and lovely that her owner is wanting her back. Yay! Hopefully you'll get a photo of her once she's home.

DoctorTwo · 07/06/2017 09:45

Thank you for an utterly heartwarming thread Sassy, I hope that if Gazzie doesn't get home she at least gets back to your place.

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuck · 07/06/2017 09:55

Well, that's probably easier. 🐦
