Just been outside the feed the cat who has his food in the outhouse. There, hanging from the old pipework are 3 absolutely huge cocoons. They are hideous! Black and more than 4 inches long. They weren't there yesterday. What the hell is going to come out? AIBU to be very worried?

Have a look here. Some are like a hairy, black penis

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 14/05/2015 00:04

OMG it looks huge! Shock

hiddenhome · 14/05/2015 00:05

Could it be that thing from Jeepers Creepers?

Oh god, just a thought but you're not a neighbour of Buffalo Bill are you?

AtomicDog · 14/05/2015 00:06

Please tell me you're in Australia or somewhere tropical?

DrLego · 14/05/2015 00:06

toxic black mould creatures? don't breathe in

WhiffleSqueak · 14/05/2015 00:07

as I typed "huge black cocoon" into google images I was glad of safe search.

lithiumfear · 14/05/2015 00:07

Could it be Cramp Ball Fungus?

TamzinGrey · 14/05/2015 00:07

Calm down OP. Something really pretty is going to emerge from there I'm sure. Perhaps a miniature unicorn with tiny sparkly wings.

2boys2girls · 14/05/2015 00:08

Its fungus

hiddenhome · 14/05/2015 00:08

It looks untidy and messy. The moth pupae look round and clean.

emmelinelucas · 14/05/2015 00:08

Yup, looks like a moth thingy to me.
It is very big, though

I wouldn't leave the cat in there.
I have never heard of a moth that was so big it could hurt anyone. There could be lots in there.

CountryMummy1 · 14/05/2015 00:09

The cocoon itself is 4 inches, maybe a touch bigger. I am in the UK I'm afraid so it's obviously something that lives here Shock. If it's fungus of some kind would it appear like that in 24 hours?? with soil around it??

The Midlands?

Erm, where exactly

KurriKurri · 14/05/2015 00:09

Op is in the Midlands Shock Quick take a photo of yourself standing next to the cocoons wearing a daily mail sad face

MrsTedCrilly · 14/05/2015 00:09

I think lithiumfear has got it! It looks too dull to be a cocoon and the soil stuff looks like fungus growth..

Millipedewithherfeetup · 14/05/2015 00:10

Does it smell of anything ? Not suggesting you put your nose too close, but any musty smell at all ?

CountryMummy1 · 14/05/2015 00:10

The cat is safely tucked in with DH (who doesn't know yet) tee hee

hiddenhome · 14/05/2015 00:10

Fungus doesn't grow that fast I don't think.

They must all be siblings though Smile

CurlyhairedAssassin · 14/05/2015 00:11

I think OP is having a little joke with us. Nothing like that could have developed that quickly if it was natural.

CountryMummy1 · 14/05/2015 00:12

I will go out tomorrow to have a poke and a sniff (with a weapon obviously). My first DM sad face opportunity at last Grin

Leopard moths are quite common from the midlands to down south.

DrLego · 14/05/2015 00:13

maybe it's hundreds of spiders

emmelinelucas · 14/05/2015 00:14

DH suggests black witch moth pupae.
I have no idea what that is
