DS malfunctioning

Purchased new directly from the manufacturer six months ago. Beautiful outer packing, all parts intact and delivered quickly.

However, keeps malfunctioning at night; will shut down perfectly for several days and then develops a glitch and makes a high pitched shrieking noise when returned to the night charging unit.

Neither me nor DH have the technical knowledge to fix this fault but I'm hoping there might be an update we can install?

After repeated episodes of shrieking noises, refuelling, shush/patting and cleaning 0.6 model still refused to charge for more than 30 minutes without maintenence.

However, it has developed a virus where the outer paint flakes and it gets red and itchy so I doubt this helped. The workshop prescribed various creams but they're only having limited success.

In glad it's not just me experiencing problems. We have a late 2013 model which (aside from the overnight charging issue which seems to be par for the course) has functioned reasonably well up til now. However, after 9 months use it is now developing the high pitched noise and leaking whenever it is detached from the motherlode. This is now happening so frequently it is difficult to get any functions completed. Has anyone else had this problem?

My 2005(pink), 2007(also pink though prefers blue) and 2009(blue) versions all came with the same glitch. It does seem to have got better over time although the early model now refuses to shut down when we want it to (to be fair that has always been an issue with that operating unit) and the newer models seem to have been built for a different time zone and always restart around 6am.

I have grown attached to them though and their little quirks. The newest model has just had his reception app installed and said goodbye at the school system portal and went in without me for the first time today. Feel a little nostalgic for the wholly dependent app.

Classics, please, MNHQ.

I am astonished that my 1997 version seems to be highly resistant to water and cold damage when outside the home, yet in the home requires an air-sealed and super-heated environment.

Catsmamma · 30/09/2014 10:03

My 97 version is only quiet when connected to the WiFi and sat next to a homemade cake.

jezzapaxmanslovechild · 30/09/2014 10:08

My 1997 unit seems to require constant artificial light to process effectively and this light is not constrained to its immediate environment and seems to be required throughout the entire housing unit. Moreover it has adistinct inability to power this light down when not required for processing. The parental housing unit looks like blackpool fecking illuminations.

soapybubbles123 · 30/09/2014 10:10

Unit has chosen an alternative docking station for it's morning recharge - me. I wouldn't mind but I haven't had my refuel yet Hmm

The paintwork is definitely looking dodgy despite repeated applications of cream.

ThistleDew I have two pink models - the 2012 and 2013.

I had to go through a very frustrating repeated ordering cycle with the first one. The monthly order requests never arrived so I had to go through a third party, two deliveries then failed. It was a huge hassle and I never got complaints on the phone. There was huge damage to the packaging.. all sorts of issues in delivery. In fairness, that one has always functioned quite nicely. Rarely requires a night-time reboot, charges beautifully. I've even installed the Manners 1.0 upgrade and self toileting app with a degree of success.

Anyway, I expected to have the same hassle when trying to order a new model so kick-started the process quite early. Imagine my surprise when after the first monthly order form was submitted half a bottle of Prosecco, we received our order in tiptop condition, on time, and with the packaging basically intact. However, we've had HUGE problems with operation. It took a good six months to iron out the glitches with night-time operation. Like others I found it would really only work if plugged into the power source which is just such high maintenance. We've had it now for over a year and while night-time charging is basically sorted (although it emits intermittent shrieks which, while they don't appear to affect the unit's operation, are very disturbing), it's interfacing with washing machines, toilets, telephones, cabling etc in a way that has led to the installation of a huge amount of firewalls that DH in particular finds MASSIVELY difficult to negotiate. This results in all sorts of swearing and bad language which the 2012 model seems to be absorbing and using!

So, it's not without hassle - but they are worth it. Am looking forward to the installation of the Chores app in a couple of years. Apparently it's free on the App Store for a couple of years, although then there might be a small charge.

We had wanted our 2009 blue model delivered to our home but there was a huge mix up at the depot and somehow it had been put into the packaging upside down. We ended up at the depot for it to be removed and to be fair they did a great job. They only had to do a small slit with a knife in the packaging compared to the tatty packaging I've heard some people were left with.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 30/09/2014 10:42

You'll see a lot more of the depot if you ever have an antique model, I'm afraid. My 1955DH developed a serious fault some months ago and had to be whisked off to the depot in a van to have an internal cable fixed. Excellent service at this point, I must say, and model now appears to be in much better condition than for some years. Unfortunately at the same time a Cardiology-for-beginners app appears to have been installed and model now obsessively measures and records all relevant data and has taken to instructing other units in the household on same. However, model has proved an excellent investment over last 32 years, so this is a small price to pay.

Eva50 · 30/09/2014 10:48

Terrible problems with the delivery of the earlier models. I was back and forth to the depot numerous times and both were eventually ready for collection two weeks later than we had been led to expect. With the 2006 model I was clear as to my expectations shortly after we placed the order and was given a 1 hour time slot for collection which made things so much easier.

Reading through the thread I notice there appear to have been a lot of different glitches with the 1997 model. I am glad I'm not alone in this. After several years with absolutely no problems at all it has developed further communication glitches this week.

soapybubbles123 · 30/09/2014 10:55

1988 DH model may be missing a few parts by the time it returns for charging Angry

He left a 2L bottle of 0.6 unit fuel on its side in the fridge and now the fridge contents are swimming in Cow&Gate.

It's not a fault, it's a feature. Wink

I've had some success with the application of Anbesol when my shiny new May 2014-DD2 is refusing to recharge.

It reminds me of my old ZX Spectrum. That used to be notoriously temperamental when loading. My 2010-DD1 is similar in that it also refuses to follow simple commands.

trulybadlydeeply · 30/09/2014 11:01

My blue 1996 model has now been relocated to a different part of the county for some specialist data loading. I am informed that this may also involve liquid uploading on a frequent basis which I fear may slow down the data loading.

I am told that I can collect said model at Christmas, although it will need recharging with food, money and clean washing immediately on arrival home.

I have a 1997 pink model, which, ironically is functioning better since the 1996 model was sent away. Sadly the two 2009 blue models are malfunctioning slightly following the older model's departure, however we are in the process of setting up a remote connection to allow data sharing.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/09/2014 11:03

DS1 (v.11.1) had a recharge malfunction last night and consequently had trouble rebooting this morning and the application of external covering programme was running so slowly that I had engage with manual assistance.

3bunnies · 30/09/2014 11:03

jezza unfortunately the need to require artificial light could be a permanent malfunction. None of the other operational units in my house have this app installed. The oldest 1969 blue vintage model is the worst as it will only turn lights on and requires them on in full daylight in a conservatory.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 30/09/2014 11:10

I feel for you. I have a seven month old model which is malfunctioning in a similar way, however the night malfunctioning appears to be a consistent problem. In the daytime the irritating noises cease and mine works like a dream. I have tried all the manufacturer's recommendations but to no avail. I'm losing far too much sleep over this problem.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 30/09/2014 11:11

My 1955DH model could be very cheap to run because it can function perfectly well at a room temperature of 17°C. 1993DS model is programmed in a similar way. Unfortunately 1992DD and I are not.

DieselSpillages · 30/09/2014 11:14

All 3 of my models have had serious malfunctions. Around 13/15 years, their programes become distorted and scrambled. They become locked in grumpy, agressive mode. I've tried downloading the empathy app but it's just not working. I think they all need a complete reboot but I'm at a loss as to how it's done.

DieselSpillages · 30/09/2014 11:17

maybe what they need is a reboot up the backside Grin

Threesocksnohairbrush · 30/09/2014 11:21

I have two delightful models manufactured in 2007 and 2009 and delivered to us a little later in proceedings. Receiving ones model without full instructions, and working out by trial and error which apps are installed, has been an exciting adventure which I would recommend to anyone Smile

2007 model while giving generally splendid service has a few glitches in its operation. I was asked by a fellow owner (of a brand new from box model) whether we had been aware of these when accepting delivery. I pointed out that as with all other models, receipts didn't appear to be included. Angry

2009 model is quite adorable apart from the Strop 1.0 which appears to be hardwired into the OS and the difficulty of operation unless interfacing with pink and sparkly plug in accessories.

AberdeenAngusina · 30/09/2014 11:22

My 1994 model can shut down totally till 3pm. Although it doesn't shut down until 3am.

Threesocksnohairbrush · 30/09/2014 11:25

Oh and does ANYONE know how to temporarily disable the Talking-About-Minecraft audio feature on the models from about 2006 upwards? Or alternatively my ears?

NetballHoop · 30/09/2014 11:32

Any tips on getting a memory upgrade for 1999, 2001 and 2003 models?

They seem to lose any data I load onto them.
