Curious to know of others married to Algerians and what, if any, cultural differences/issues you have experienced. We've been married 6 years and have 2 kids (twins). Life is a bit of a rollercoaster sometimes.

Ziggzagg · 05/08/2018 11:41

Ive been learning Arabic, just the basics but going on to a full course soon:

Salam alaykum - Hello
Kayfa al hal- How are you all?
Men fedlek - Please (to a man)
Men fedleki - To a woman
Chukren - Thank you
Massalama - Goodbye

Other than that, point, smile 😊

BeeMyBaby · 05/08/2018 22:23

Zig zagg - I take it you've been learning traditional/Quranic arabic rather than Algerian Arabic?

Ziggzagg · 05/08/2018 22:30

Yes Grin DH just keeps laughing at me saying I'm being "posh"Grin

Stephlaidi · 05/08/2018 23:56

Awww thata good did he ask you to cover your hair when you go there. I just know salah malikum and lahbass. I know other few words bit between me and husband lol

Stephlaidi · 05/08/2018 23:57

Im shy aswell which is not gonna help me lol

Ziggzagg · 06/08/2018 09:37

I'm quite shy but DHs family are lovely. It doesn't help when he puts me on to them on Skype and tells me to speak Arabic haha!

How long are they staying for? Are they staying at your home? If so, just plan a few days where you can get a break!

Stephlaidi · 06/08/2018 10:34

My dh just translates but they can say hello how are you and bye i try but i cant pronouce some words lol i feel weird lol probly 2 weeks i think or more. Im dreading if they see my tatue on m6 wrist his sister already see it she can speak alittle english and she said ohh what that a tatue i said its henna lol she said nooooo lol she knows what it is lol and my dh ask me when i go there cover my hair but i dont cover it in england he said its to not draw attention from other male algerains im thinkng greate i cant even stand the heat in englanfmd how am i going to cope over there with my head cover up.

BeeMyBaby · 06/08/2018 15:30

I wear a hijab when I go, I think it's easier when out and about as I don't feel I stand out so much, in Algiers most women wear hijabs. If you wear a hijab then you should wear long sleeves so that would cover your tattoo but tbh I don't think they would mind tattoos that much so I wouldn't really worry about his family seeing it.

Stephlaidi · 06/08/2018 16:13

Oh ok. What about the heat there

Ziggzagg · 06/08/2018 20:05

If you get a light material scarf it keeps the sun off your head and you stay cool, just wear lots of cotton. DHs Mum and sisters don't wear hijab but I'm taking a few for when we go out and about Smile

BeeMyBaby · 06/08/2018 22:08

And plus when it's really hot (like 40c) everyone just seems to sit inside anyway so you wouldn't need to wear the hijab with family. However I have worn it in mid-high thirties whilst either pushing a pram or wearing a baby carrying and yes it's hot and sil says I look like a tomato Blush

Stephlaidi · 07/08/2018 01:00

Ha ha oh god lol my dh mum wear it but dh sister she dosnt. And she wanna take me to the shopping mall when i go i kinda feel like a prat wearing it and shes not wearing it lol and she lives there lol

Stephlaidi · 07/08/2018 01:05

Do algerain men really eye you up my dh said they do and they got no shame to come over and try it with you even if they see your married wtf is that all about that why he want me to cover my hair i told him but your sister dosnt . He said yea but youll show her a good exsample but in a way im not cos when she comes to england she will see i dont wear it here.

BeeMyBaby · 07/08/2018 06:11

Yes Algerian men eye up women, however I've never heard of them going up to random women and chatting them up. As men and boys are not invited round to each other's homes to hang about (as they don't want other men to see their sisters/wives/mothers) they tend to congregate and sit in the streets, cafes just for men etc. It can be a bit intimidating. I recently saw a post about guys doing this in the greater London area and a petition was sent round to stop it. However seems standard there.

Stephlaidi · 07/08/2018 11:04

Ok i see. Oh wow in london lol. I remember when i was 19 years old im 31years old now. Well when i was 19 i went into this cafe which to me was a internet cafe i remember going to use the computer and i remember seeing alot of men in there and they were looking at me i thought. Why are they looking so much. I gave them evil looks. It turns out its a algerian cafe lol which is still running today lol my husband goes there and has been going there since he was 19 lol i met him when i was 21 years old. I thought it was odd that there was alot of men. I just thought they were itailan or something as i never heard of algeria before.

BeeMyBaby · 07/08/2018 15:36
