Then come up with a plan to increase your income. What do you do?

I work full time as a typist and also look after my elderly stepfather after work and weekends. Unfortunately I don't have a husband who can support me.

I have a master's degree in physics thank you very much

Clearly not very useful if you work as an orthodontist's receptionist.....

Personal responsibility is only for those without rich (ish) husbands of course.

Sometimes I think: people should take self-responsibility and cut their cloth accordingly instead of moaning about the government and not doing anything to improve their situation.

Where have I moaned about the government?

The irony 🤣

Exactly. This is what I meant. Live within your means. OP is (thankfully) making ends meet and has enough to pay rent, food, bills. She has Netflix (which she's perfectly entitled to have) and has £175 a month spare

At some point you have to take personal responsibility for your life. OP should make plans to get a better paying job, and think about how she's going to achieve that.

I do take responsibility for my life always have done, worked since my youngest was 5 when he started school, he’s 24 now, haven’t had no one looking after me

Actually do you know what I’m proud of myself, I’ve raised two sons alone, worked since they were young, and now they have grown into fine young men, who work hard my eldest has is own home, my youngest has saved hard, and I think I’ve done that raised them who they are today, all me.

Be proud of this

and do put in a claim for uc. Anything helps

@XenoBitch I find comfortably off women who either don’t work or do a bit of part time once the kids are older but have well off husbands/ partners ( but usually husbands) are often the most judgemental of the lot - my mother was like this and to be honest if she hadn’t had very comfortably off husbands facilitating her choices would have been up shit creek

You absolutely should be proud. Claim every single penny that you are entitled to, you deserve it. Good luck with everything. X

No I don't want my taxes to help those like her. Especially since OP can manage, pay her bills, have netflix and have £175 on the side. If OP was in dire situation as genuinely really struggling with bills, food, unable to heat home, the yes I'd understand the need for the welfare system to give OP temporary support. If OP had significant health issues then I'd understand more long term support.

At some point, there's personal responsibility and people need to accept the consequences of their actions (not upskilling, working hard at school).

I work part time and just being extra money to the family (which we use on holidays or new furnishings). My DH is very high up in Big4 and brings in around £120k to the family.

My DS earns around £31k.

You work part time just like OP, but you seem to think that you are in a position to look down on her and scold her about even considering checking whether she is eligible for some benefits.

You relying on your high earning DH doesn't give you any moral authority to lecture the OP. Plus, you can't choose what your taxes pay for. I doubt that you pay much tax on your little part-time job anyway.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 20/08/2025 11:31

OP you should be proud. You are doing so well to manage on that amount. I think the real issue at play here are the BTL landlords making a killing from rising rent prices when wages are stagnating. If less of the money was going on rent which is probably propping up local property prices as part of a rental portfolio there would be more money to live on.

dizzydizzydizzy · 20/08/2025 11:41

Your only obvious options are to get another job or apply for Universal Credit. UC may well even give you money towards the rent. It is also worth contacting your council because most of them offer council tax reductions for people on low wages - each one does their own thing.

If you apply for UC. They will insist that you apply for jobs and you will need to provide them with evidence that you are doing it.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/08/2025 11:46

@dizzydizzydizzy will they really though if she’s working 30 hours

Cantabulous · 20/08/2025 12:09

OP you sound absolutely awesome! You’re resilient and self/reliant, kind and open to ideas. I really hope that between cleaning, caring and mothers helping, you manage to get some more hours to increase your income and, I would strongly advise, start saving for the future. Wishing you the very best of luck 😊

@dizzydizzydizzy will they really though if she’s working 30 hours

Will they really do what? Give her UC? Give her some rent money? Make her apply for jobs?

They will almost certainly make her apply for jobs or get more hours with her current employer. I can’t answer the rest for sure but I think it would be worth an application.
