My rent has just increased,I’m single live alone I’ve worked out after I’ve paid rent, bills, and food I’m left with £175 for the month, does anyone else live on this?

I could look into this, I just hate applying for things like this.

If you have no disability, as a single adult with no children, the only thing is the council tax reduction which you already claim.
You need more hours.

Your outgoings look pretty lean. Can you up your incomings at all? Overtime or a second PT job/babysitting/dog walking etc?

I have thought about a second job

I’m in a similar position, my take home is a bit more but I have to run a car ( no public transport to work)
I refuse to cancel my Netflix, I can’t afford much of a social life so watching tv is one of life’s pleasures for me.
I have a Waitrose near me and pop in several times a week for my free latte - they made it so you don’t have to buy anything now, I mean it’s a bit cheeky but I’m just following the rules🤷🏻‍♀️😊
The only way I can see things improving is if I go for a house share rather than living alone although I’m in my 50s and whilst that was fun when I was younger I don’t relish the prospect now!

Delphiniumandlupins · 14/08/2025 16:52

I know it's easy to say but your only choices are to lower your spending or up your income. Would you consider moving to a shared property? Or can you increase your hours at work/look for another part-time job?

curiositykilledthiscat · 14/08/2025 16:52

Have you thought about house sharing?

I work 30 hours not sure if that is full time

Well theres your problem. You dont work full time. 30 hours is part time. Full.time would usually be 37.5 hours so you are missing out on around £370 a month before deductions

Yes I could rent a room in a house with people I don’t know, but I don’t think I would like it.

Depends what the 175 has to cover, clothes, skincare makeup, presents for Christmas and birthdays, the occasional meal out, coffee out a few times a month, a bit set aside for time off work home stuff like new kettle or a new cushion 2-3 haircuts probably doable, but not enough to get your nails and hair done every month or get takeaway once a week and definitely not enough to save for car, foreign holidays or a house deposit.its 2100 a year, so it needs to be carefully budgeted

I’ve looked for other jobs their all part time or even lower! My work can’t give me any more hours.

You don’t work full time then OP, start by looking for a full time job. Even a full time job on NMW would make you nearly £500 a month better off.

Yes just general things, I don’t get my nails done and hair not much anymore maybe 3 times a year. I don’t live very lavishly lol

Could you get your work over 4 days? That gives you a full day ( or more) to do another job.

Sorry there are no easy answers. Seems you live frugally.

You've not mentioned any debt, and you can afford to eat and pay your bills, so it's not all bad. X

No unfortunately not I have to work 5 days
No debt, yes I can, I was just wondering if other people got by on that amount left each month, I guess I’m just panicking because my rent has increased again.

What days/hours do you work. Could you do a couple of evenings in a supermarket or pub?

Even just 1 day at the weekend could give you maybe £30/£40 a week more.

Yes I could rent a room in a house with people I don’t know, but I don’t think I would like it.

I get it (and have been there), but you know, needs must and all that. You’re paying a huge amount of your wages on rent and don’t earn enough to save from what it seems, so you’re in a precarious position.

I work mornings, I could do I have been looking but can’t find anything, I’ve even been doing surveys in the afternoon, but I’m not making much £7 since Saturday 😂

30 hours would be about 4 days. a standard full time role is approx 37 to 40 hours a week. Could you up your hours?

No 30 hours is part time and that's where your problem lies. Look around for a new job for 40 hours a week. My adult son works in a warehouse 40 hours a week. Not what he wants with his qualifications but as he says it pays the mortgage and leaves him £250 per month after all bills and food. Also as he says he could do overtime if he wanted to but he's not keen. Could you do warehouse work? He gets £2.20ph over minimum wage.
