I don’t take home that much, and I’m on a little over NMW £12.30ph, infact I didn’t get that much this month and I done overtime 🤷‍♀️

What are you educational qualifications? Why do you only do shop work? How old are you?

It's easy to say move home or get a better paying job for observers who are on high incomes , l would follow many good suggestions on here , including claiming universal credit to support you and you can claim rent and council tax support . Then in the long term if you want move elsewhere or change jobs it's up to you .But short term look after yourself

Is netflix all that essential. Can use channel 4, bbc iplauery(no ads) and ITV?

Netflix is like a tenner - it's hardly a game changer.

They need to increase their income long term otherwise they are living a very miserable life saying no to minimum "luxuries".

I'd suggest getting a second job and probably a third

I wouldn’t say I live a miserable life

I’ve been doing surveys, but only earned £8 in just under a week, they are time consuming too, and I have to keep charging my phone loads.

So does that equate to £1 per hour if your time or even less?……this is a waste of time when you could pick up a part time job somewhere else that would pay you more than £8 per hour…..makes no sense

You will if inflation keeps going up.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 17/08/2025 18:10

That can’t be right. I do payroll and we have 3 people working 37.5 paid hours a week on NMW and they take home about £1490 a month.

IfYoureLeavingTakeMeToo · 17/08/2025 19:09

You probably need to sit and assess and look at your life choices. Learn some technical skills. Excel, IT, coding, data analysis

I see well that does sound right then I suppose. Can you increase hours at all?

and I do agree that while Netflix isn’t an essential while you aren’t getting in to debt every month I would keep it if you are making use of it a lot. This isn’t strictly the right thing to do, but our Netflix can have up to 5 users. Could you split the cost with a friend or relative that you trust and share an account? Don’t worry I have my hard hat on and am ready for the outraged comments but I bet a large majority of people using Netflix do this!

People are focusing way to much on the Netflix cost, the few pounds she may or may not save by doing some of the suggestions will not make a blind bit of difference to the OPs situation

NotEnoughKnittingTime · 17/08/2025 21:34

Just apply for UC. Don't let pride make you struggle when you don't need to.

I mean she's making ends meet already. I'd understand if she was struggling and was in debt or couldn't make bill payments. But she is, so why burden the taxpayer.

Yes - this isn’t about dumping a subscription or small things like that. The problem is clear, she lives alone and most of her low income goes in rent so she should live with others. It is the most obvious answer to quickly and significantly increasing her income but I get that at 49 it may not be the most appealing option.

CrimsonGlaze · 17/08/2025 21:53

Get a second job, miss part timer (tongue im cheek, OP)

Could u apply for some care work?

BCBird · 17/08/2025 21:55

The chances are your rent is going to keep increasing. You realise you need to increase your earning power. I certainly wouldn't not cancel Netflix.

BCBird · 17/08/2025 21:58

Applying for UC seems to be the argument put forward for most posts. The pot is not bottomless
