I've posted about this before and it is getting worse. Takes kids into London today to spend some pocket money off grandparents. Goes yo Pizza Hut and its card only them the glossier shop and they don't Even have tills 😡 you put details into the iPad and pay contactless. I don't understand how all these business are getting away with refusing to accept cash.

OP posts:

I am looking forward to the day where we become cashless, everything would be much easier. I can believe how some shops get away with being cash only.

SleepingisanArt · 04/12/2024 22:34

OP it's expensive for businesses to pay cash into their business bank account. It's cheaper now to accept payment by card (it never used to be). Most businesses have to pay a monthly account management fee and to then pay an additional percentage of any cash banked is understandably undesirable.

Doggymummar · 04/12/2024 22:36

I haven't had or used cash for years now, I prefer it to be honest 95p for a pack of gum, use card no little 5p hanging around.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 04/12/2024 22:37

Lots of businesses near me are card only. Less likely to get nicked, not much more expensive to take, keeps the insurance down, you don’t need to send someone to the bank every few days. They can refuse to take cash if they want.

Presumably you had cards with you to pay for the underground, so what’s the problem.

But how would children pay for anything if everywhere is cashless?

The likes of a Go Henry card I guess.

I don't. Too many banks have IT failures and people can't access their accounts or get bills paid, or supermarkets have till failures so people can't buy their food. It's happening more and more.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 04/12/2024 22:43

Well, card is cleaner, safer (for everyone - can't have it snatched from you, shops that don't hold cash are less of a target), more convenient. Shops and restaurants don't have to spend time and money managing their cash/change levels/counting/getting armoured trucks out to pick it all up!

I get some people still enjoy cash, but I can really see the appeal to consumers and retailers.

I always carry cash with me lately as there has been so many bank technical issues.

mynameiscalypso · 04/12/2024 22:45

I'm away at the moment in a European city and I realised earlier that not only do I not have any cash on me at all but I also don't have any credit or debit cards with me too. Just didn't even occur to me that I should bring them.

rebelelf · 04/12/2024 22:47

My local pub went cashless, lost loads of customers but pub chain carried on insisting card was best until the internet went down, nobody at the pub could pay their bill & they couldn't open the next day because it wasn't fixed.
They started taking cash the next week & have continued to since.

TeenLifeMum · 04/12/2024 22:48

Getting the tube it was cheaper to “pay as you go” rather than buy a ticket. But you need a bank card per person so with 3 dc with me I don’t have 4 different bloody bank cards so had to pay extra for tickets! Utterly bonkers.

You can snatch a card and use it for contactless payments though

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 04/12/2024 22:52

The Glossier system is a bit odd but if they're old enough for that they're old enough to have a debit card. I don't use cash for anything anymore.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 04/12/2024 22:53

I have the opposite problem in my town - I can't find a nail bar that accepts a card. I'm suspicious of 'cash only' businesses

Once there’s no cash then the ‘powers that be’ have total control of your life…can only buy what you’re allowed…can only go where they let you…they can have total control & there’ll be nowt you can do about it!

You didn't think it was a good idea to bring any money at all with you when travelling? Have you ever been away from home before?

I presumed she meant she just has google pay on her phone or whatever rather than a physical card?

that happened to me. We live outside London, come up a fair bit but normally with a travel card. This time we didn't need one so were tapping on busses. I had no idea I could only use my card to pay for one fare. Why!

By giving it to an adult, who then pays with their card. The cash is then given back to the child as pocket money in the coming weeks, and the same coins just go round and round happily like that Grin

No. With a child’s prepaid debit card. A pocket money card. There are loads of them now.

And will happen more with cyber attacks on all types of systems.
Malevolent regimes abroad can cause mayhem without firing a bullet.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 04/12/2024 23:07

@Sidebeforeself in theory yes, but I've had my card 'frozen' on the app for years and rarely carry it. I have a virtual card attached to my phone/watch which I use for all payments.
