I've posted about this before and it is getting worse. Takes kids into London today to spend some pocket money off grandparents. Goes yo Pizza Hut and its card only them the glossier shop and they don't Even have tills 😡 you put details into the iPad and pay contactless. I don't understand how all these business are getting away with refusing to accept cash.

I prefer cash for budgeting.
it’s too easy to tap away and lose track of spending. I also don’t want to pay £1 for something on card.

And where would craft fairs, tombolas and raffles for local good causes, schools etc be without cash transactions? The PSA running a barbecue at a school event won't want to have to need a card machine to accept payments for burgers, and who is going to buy a £1 raffle ticket with their credit card?

On the door of the school fair you buy a £10 card. The card has squares in it worth 50p each. You buy something or have a go on a game and the appropriate number of 50ps is crossed off. If you have any left at the end then you get them refunded.

No need for floats, no need to count cash, far less likely to be nicked, don’t have to store large amount of cash anywhere over night.

That is brilliant!

They have closed all the banks near me so many of the shops stopped taking cash - it's a 30 minute drive to the nearest bank each way!

it is annoying when you can't use cash. seems unnecessary.

Getting the tube it was cheaper to “pay as you go” rather than buy a ticket. But you need a bank card per person so with 3 dc with me I don’t have 4 different bloody bank cards so had to pay extra for tickets! Utterly bonkers.

It's not bonkers. Kids under 11 travel free and 11-16 get a reduced rate. If you paid for each of them by tapping a card you'd pay a full adult fare for all of them.

RaininSummer · 05/12/2024 07:52

My grandkids love going to a car boot sale and spending a few pounds which would be difficult without cash. Also these kids cards aren't free are they? I think we will end up with young people who make no connection between their spending, the value of money and debt let alone being unable to understand change.

WillowTit · 05/12/2024 07:54

first time i took dc to london, she wasnt free, but didnt have a contactless card or any sort of card,
luckily i had two cards when we caught the bus! and then we got let off on the return journey
oyster cards were needed for future trips

I don't. Too many banks have IT failures and people can't access their accounts or get bills paid, or supermarkets have till failures so people can't buy their food. It's happening more and more.

Guess you must be unlucky in 40 odd years I think I’ve been affected by IT failures twice

the positive for my paying card you don’t need to keep receipts never lose cash never get the wrong change and it easier

OP it's expensive for businesses to pay cash into their business bank account. It's cheaper now to accept payment by card (it never used to be). Most businesses have to pay a monthly account management fee and to then pay an additional percentage of any cash banked is understandably undesirable.

And then you have that stupid meme that going round all the time that says if you pay cash I it's still the same amount after being passed around 10 different people - well maybe but only if they never pay it into a bank! And as far as I know you can't just take your weeks takings from the till in cash and troop round all your suppliers / energy company's / mortgage provider and hand them a pile of £1 coins!

C152 · 05/12/2024 08:00

I agree that shops should take both cash and card, but I understand why some wouldn't want to take cash (increased bank charges, risk to the person who has to take a bag of cash to bank each day etc). I did find it much easier to teach DS the value of money when using cash though. Despite explaining that using a card didn't mean we got the item for free, we still had to have money on the card to pay for it, it wasn't real to him. When he took his pocket money to the toy shop, however, and had to add up the cost of several items he wanted, figure out whether he had enough cash for all of them, then figure out whether he wanted them badly enough to part with money it took him a while to save, he really understood it.

There are also lots of people who don't want to pay for items using a card. Yes, at the moment, if you live in a big city, you can shop elsewhere, but if more shops keep declining cash, it will no longer become an option. I don't see lack of options as a good thing, particularly, as others have pointed out, when hybrid warfare is a very current issue.

I am looking forward to the day where we become cashless, everything would be much easier. I can believe how some shops get away with being cash only.

Gold is what you will need (although I don't really know why) when a malevolent power prevents access to the internet by cyber attacks and cutting undersea cables.

1 wedding ring = 4 loaves of bread (from a antisnal wood fired oven).

You can snatch a card and use it for contactless payments though

You can block the card via the app in minutes!

Once there’s no cash then the ‘powers that be’ have total control of your life…can only buy what you’re allowed…can only go where they let you…they can have total control & there’ll be nowt you can do about it!

😆

Because gold retains its value, while currencies are subject to flux, particularly in times of turmoil. There's also a finite supply of gold and it will always be in demand. In situations like war, gold will increase in value, whereas the value of local currencies will decrease or, in some situations, cease to exist altogether.

"Of course?"

Like everyone uses it.

A lot of people don't use Revolut because it's extremely unsafe.

If you get scammed on revolut, good luck trying to find any telephone number to call.

You will find it very hard to get through to someone at Revolut.

Lol. It's not extremely unsafe. People get scammed in the same way they do any other bank account...they give their details to scammers. Studies show it happens more on accounts like revolut because people are less careful with them 🤷‍♀️.

Use it properly and safely and you'll be fine. And everyone I know has revolut, even my 93 year old aunt and my 6 year old nephew.

Felmerbud · 05/12/2024 08:12

I work as a bar manager in a busy tourist area - twice this summer we had power cuts which left me unable to take any card payments - I had to turn so many people away as they had no cash , big loss to lose a whole day’s income !

OnLockdown · 05/12/2024 08:13

It's clear from this thread that having both cash and card/phone options is the best. Then people can decide which they prefer.

But how would children pay for anything if everywhere is cashless?

You can get them cards, like Go Henry, where you pay this money in from Grandparents and then you take them and teach them to use their cards? Mine are 16 and 19 and these were around for children 10 years ago.

My DC’s DGP still send an envelope with money in to them a couple of times a year. It automatically goes into my purse and I transfer the money. The cash comes in useful for when my local garage rejects my applepay/bank card or to pay the dodgy cash-only barbers!!

I have the opposite problem in my town - I can't find a nail bar that accepts a card. I'm suspicious of 'cash only' businesses

Snap. I assume they are avoiding tax and money laundering

That meme is even more stupid because it takes no account of taxes involved, so presumably everyone is tax evading by using cash. Otherwise there'd be VAT taken out at every step, PAYE/NIC taken off the wages, income tax/corporation tax on profits, etc etc. It would soon get reduced to close to zero because of tax alone, let alone bank charges when it keeps getting banked, or disappears when it's lost or stolen.

In many cases, your assumption would be correct. Tax evasion and benefit fraud in the "black economy" is a huge and growing problem. Same with money laundering!

LezUlez · 05/12/2024 08:16

Travelling to Sweden last year which is virtually cashless, I had some currency about £15 worth but couldn't even get my friends to take it, finally gave it to the lady begging outside a supermarket. Yet I noticed that the "in case of war" leaflet that the Swedish government has recently issued to all its citizens, includes a recommendation that everyone should keep a week's worth of cash at home.

Princessfluffy · 05/12/2024 08:16

Round my way even the four year olds have card payment!!!
