I've posted about this before and it is getting worse. Takes kids into London today to spend some pocket money off grandparents. Goes yo Pizza Hut and its card only them the glossier shop and they don't Even have tills 😡 you put details into the iPad and pay contactless. I don't understand how all these business are getting away with refusing to accept cash.

@DowntonFlabbie ah I forgot the MN rule number 3, if it doesn't happen to you personally then it can't be true. My bad. I got confused for a minute and thought I was a customer service manager in charge of checkouts and responsible for when card readers go down, but as it's only happened to you twice then I'm obviously making it up.

If you're that bothered, just ask the bank to block/reduce the contactless option on your card or ask for a card without contactless.

Im not bothered. I have the app . Im just saying it is quite easy for people to nick your card and make a few quick transactions

Sidebeforeself · 05/12/2024 08:43

@CautiousLurker1 Yes thats my point! I was responding to a PP who said cash can get nicked from your hand- I was just pointing out that pinching your card is possible too.

We're sitting ducks for a cyber attack really aren't we. So much complacency going on.

If I lost my card I'd be screwed as I don't have online banking so couldn't block the card quickly If I lost cash it would be a bit irritating but no harm done. Luckily it's rare where I live not to be able to pay by cash.

Edited

Then get online banking! And pp, get the app?!

You can't complain about the difficulty of using cards etc when you're the ones making it difficult.

Also, such weird points about cash being better for budgeting and knowing what you spent...how? My revolut tracks exactly what I spent, and where and when. It shows me how much I started with, how much came in, how much went out. I can switch currencies for free in seconds, I can breakdown my spending per day, week, month in categories, to show my spending on groceries, transport etc. I can split bills in restaurants and pay friends instantly. I can link all my acct together, and I can pay pocket money to children, monitor their spending and control their cards. I can have vaults to save for specific purposes, and shared vaults to manage clubs or group savings/payments.
All at the touch of a button.

You can just spend cash. Which one works better for budgeting?

Weird response, with the defensive sarcasm. 🤔Obviously if you work in tills, you'll see it more. My point is that it's not a concern for the average consumer (that would be me).
Sorry you were confused.

You can block the card via the app in minutes!

If the thief hasn’t also snatched your phone.

You can log in from a different phone, or laptop. Still easier than them having all your cash.

SheilaFentiman · 05/12/2024 08:49

I wouldn’t dream of carrying £500 in my purse but because I have two debit and three credit cards in there, effectively, that is what I am doing. It’s mildly terrifying.

Sure - but if you are out and about, you can’t do it “in minutes” - and if cash is snatched, then you have only lost that cash, the thief can’t spend £100 before you’ve even caught your breath if they only snatched a tenner from your hand.

How is it effectively what you're doing? And why are you so scared?

Even if you didn't freeze your cards quick enough, AND you had 500 available in pin free taps (which you can change, if you wish), you report the theft and it's covered by your bank. Your cash would just be gone.

So much scaremongering nonsense on this thread.

It's not scaremongering nonsense. You are very rude. Good day.

Felmerbud · 05/12/2024 08:55

taxguru - I can open the till manually so could use that for the few customers who actually had cash , had to write everything down on good old fashioned paper to put through when the power came back !
was in summer daytime so thankfully didn’t need light or heat , but could only sell bottles as the pumps and cooler also didn’t work
The kitchen had to close !

more people dont do online banking than those few that dont use cash.
very few people cant use cash
there are an awful lot of people who dont do online banking

DogInATent · 05/12/2024 09:03

Most of the public (and a surprising number of small business owners) don't realise that the cost of handling cash can be significant. Usually because the time to process and bank it at the end of the day/week is discounted - or frequently unpaid.

It used to be quite common in a few places I've worked for Doris From Accounts to do the bank run to the night safe on her way home - unpaid after her paid hours had ended, and in her own car without business use insurance.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 04/12/2024 23:04

that happened to me. We live outside London, come up a fair bit but normally with a travel card. This time we didn't need one so were tapping on busses. I had no idea I could only use my card to pay for one fare. Why!

Tfl caps payments to a daily travel card for each card used. For that reason only one person can use each card. However kids go free on buses most adults have their own cards so I doubt it's normally an issue.

TeenLifeMum · 05/12/2024 09:11

NobleWashedLinen · 04/12/2024 23:31

Children under 10 travel free with a paying adult.
Children age 11-15 shouldn't be using bank cards anyway as a bank card will always be charged the adult fare. We got our DC an 11-15 Oyster Card because we go to london often enough for it to have been worth the trouble but if you only go occasionally an ordinary oyster card can be activated for Child Fare use at any staffed underground station.

The ticket was more expensive than pay as you go (machine told me this) due to zones I needed. My dc are 2x13 and 16. I didn’t want 16yo paying with her card, it was my treat! We don’t live near London so am Oyster card isn’t worth it for once a year use.

My teens are still “kids” or does everyone make their 13-16 yos pay on a family day out?

TeenLifeMum · 05/12/2024 09:13

Novaavon · 05/12/2024 07:51

It's not bonkers. Kids under 11 travel free and 11-16 get a reduced rate. If you paid for each of them by tapping a card you'd pay a full adult fare for all of them.

It was still cheaper - machine told me due to Zones! My dc are teens.

OneOliveEagle · 05/12/2024 09:15

I always carry cash and retain a small pile at home. I unconsciously spend so much tapping away on a card that card is very dangerous to me!

Recently I sold an expensive item online and insisted on a cash payment… I could not bring myself to take a bank transfer/PayPal due to fear of it being a scam / buyer doing a charge back etc…only physical cash would do.

I like options. Receiving discounts for online shopping/bookings. I don’t like all the hassle of car parks that are App or card only. So many calls to my bank pointing out they’ve charged me twice for parking! Fed up of signing up for different apps etc…

I used to embrace all the latest tech but feel like I reached a saturation point with it and now choosing to go back to a more simple life.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 05/12/2024 09:15

I have a friend who works for a national chain of shoe shops who still has to take cash to the bank once a week. She goes in work time, but has to use her own car to get into town and then carry a big bag of cash tucked in her own bag through town. And then get bagged coins from the bank to bring back to the shop.

It's not a huge amount these days I don't suppose, probably less than £1k, but it's a hell of a risk for her and the business to take. I assume the risk of doing that outweighs the cost of having a security company come and collect the cash.

greenose · 05/12/2024 09:24

As others have said the likes of go Henry and rooster cards arnt free, then it's the chore of taking all there birthday/Christmas and pocket money the bank to get it put on the card. Dd has ASD and loses absolutely everything so whilst she did have a go Henry I found I was constantly having to replace missing cards. Gone are the days that they can go out and spend pocket money on what they want 😡

I use cash as much as possible- it's too easy to over spend with my card, at least with cash you can see it dwindling! I don't like the idea of the government and banks having full control over my money- if war was to break out or technical outages your vulnerable to loosing all your money.
