I've posted about this before and it is getting worse. Takes kids into London today to spend some pocket money off grandparents. Goes yo Pizza Hut and its card only them the glossier shop and they don't Even have tills 😡 you put details into the iPad and pay contactless. I don't understand how all these business are getting away with refusing to accept cash.

I don't. Too many banks have IT failures and people can't access their accounts or get bills paid, or supermarkets have till failures so people can't buy their food. It's happening more and more.

I remember a really frustrating week where a client paid me in cash. I had very little in my account and went to a couple of places that were card only. No bank for 20 miles, post office open minimal hours. I eventually paid the cash in on my day off (Friday). When the bank promptly crashed. It was widespread, in the news. I couldn’t withdraw any money or pay by card until the Sunday.

Imagine the rage!

And where would craft fairs, tombolas and raffles for local good causes, schools etc be without cash transactions? The PSA running a barbecue at a school event won't want to have to need a card machine to accept payments for burgers, and who is going to buy a £1 raffle ticket with their credit card?

At my local school fete loads had small card machines. It's very normal

WillowTit · 05/12/2024 08:19

annoying in sainsbury self service i queued for longer because i was cash only

I work as a bar manager in a busy tourist area - twice this summer we had power cuts which left me unable to take any card payments - I had to turn so many people away as they had no cash , big loss to lose a whole day’s income !

How did you stay open with no power? Did you have your own generator for power for heating/lighting/ventilation, and what about tills etc - were they battery powered? What about CCTV for security and fire alarms, etc??

When our city suffered 4 days of power cuts in Storm Desmond a few years ago, everything closed as there was no power. Cash was useless as everything was closed.

Even our main line train station was closed and trains ran straight through without stopping because it wasn't safe and against health & safety laws to have people in a station without lighting, CCTV for security and where the toilets were closed (again because of no lighting for H&S). And of course, the booking office couldn't operate without power for the tills, ticket machine, heating & lighting, no facility for refreshments, etc.

This is completely normal, OP, and your children will easily learn to navigate the system.

You can block the card via the app in minutes!

Yes but only if you have the app! Not everybody does. Small contactless fraudulent purchases a very very common now. Thieves know it will be picked up quickly but it’s worth it to them because hey do it to so many people

spuddy4 · 05/12/2024 08:23

We've lost internet connection in my store and had to revert to cash only. Anyone who says cashless is better obviously isn't accounting for when the systems go down and it does happen a lot more than people think.

I refuse to use places that don't accept cash. I think using cash is a good way to help reinforce the concept of budgeting because actual paper a d coins can have more impact than numbers on a screen.
And before anyone tells me not to go to Sweden, yep, I'm aware.....

Pumpkincozynights · 05/12/2024 08:25

I always have both on me.
We are going cashless at work and I can’t wait. Taking cash is a pain in the arse. I have to balance it all at the end of the day and complete spreadsheets, then bag it up for the security guard to collect and complete more paperwork. We aren’t allowed to keep much cash overnight in The building ( insurance purposes) so it’s a nightmare when several customers need lots of change. If we don’t have change I have to tram round town trying to get change and most banks won’t swap notes for change unless you bank with them. So my employer gets angry that I personally cannot get change. The staff don’t come to work armed with bags of change either. I think this has forced my employer to move towards cashless.

I'm away at the moment in a European city and I realised earlier that not only do I not have any cash on me at all but I also don't have any credit or debit cards with me too. Just didn't even occur to me that I should bring them.

You're not in Germany then?
Also, what are you actually using, if you have no cards or cash, just a phone?

mynameiscalypso · 05/12/2024 08:28

@Nolegusta No, I'm in a different European country. I am using Apple Pay, just don't have my physical cards/wallet with me.

What if the gadget fails (broken, lost)?

It's common but not necessarily normal to everyone.

It really doesn't. I've had it happen to me maybe twice in 20 years and you know what I did? I just didn't buy whatever it was. And my life carried on unaffected 🤷‍♀️

mynameiscalypso · 05/12/2024 08:31

@Nolegusta I have a spare phone with me. I'm not saying it was sensible, just that I always use contactless and therefore it didn't occur to me to make sure I had anything physical with me. I was only really musing on the fact that I am so out of the habit of paying for anything with anything other than my phone.

WillowTit · 05/12/2024 08:31

i remember there was an issue at a petrol station, cash only,
now that was a necessity imo

taxguru · 05/12/2024 08:32

VeryQuaintIrene · 05/12/2024 00:01

No, that's not how it happened. Quite a few shops were open after a day or two and were able to accept cash, which sadly we barely had, having not taken the storm warnings nearly as seriously as we should have done.

Edited

Not in our city when Storm Desmond took out our substation. Literally everything was closed except for the odd small independent selling off their perishables such as the village bakery and butcher where the owners opened for a while but soon closed after a couple of hours once perishables had sold.

We had no power for four days!

You can't employ staff in an unsafe environment or where H&S can't be adhered to, i.e. too cold, too dark, no security, no refreshments/sanitation, no fire alarm, no telecoms, no panic buttons, etc. Not to mention no till/computer systems to read bar codes for pricing, etc in bigger places like supermarkets.

Petrol stations can't open because they need power for the petrol pumps.

Some shops need power for automatic entry/exit doors. The list goes on as to why shops can't stay open in protracted power cuts.

If you're that bothered, just ask the bank to block/reduce the contactless option on your card or ask for a card without contactless.

Wolfpa · 05/12/2024 08:35

@Nolegusta i was in Germany last week as used ApplePay for everything. Even at the Christmas Market stalls.

You can snatch a card and use it for contactless payments though

You can pinch a purse/wallet and spend all the cash in it in moments too?

gamerchick · 05/12/2024 08:38

We're sitting ducks for a cyber attack really aren't we. So much complacency going on.

If I lost my card I'd be screwed as I don't have online banking so couldn't block the card quickly If I lost cash it would be a bit irritating but no harm done. Luckily it's rare where I live not to be able to pay by cash.

IncessantNameChanger · 05/12/2024 08:38

I always have some cash. Our local sainsbury's have regular IT failures and then all the ATMs get cleared out. All takeaways are cash only ( tax evasion I guess but it's all the ones I use). Some car parks are still cash only and there's no bank to withdraw change.

My ds12 has asd and zero concept of money so I'm teaching via paying cash

electricpeach · 05/12/2024 08:38

I won’t go anywhere that doesn’t accept cash. It’s a slippery slope imo and we should all by trying our bit to keep it
