Couldn't see a December thread so thought I'd start one. Last chance to earn some extra pennies in 2021, hope it's a good month for everybody (for profit and festivities!) Smile

Thank you @8dpwoah I think I've done it correctly.

Just my luck. Been waiting months and the first one that comes along is New Year's Eve and New Year's Day studying Grin

ruralwanderer · 31/12/2021 12:27

@AppleJane you need to raise a ticket. There's usually a link in the email they send you Smile

AppleJane · 31/12/2021 13:28

@ruralwanderer I've responded to their ticket which has reopened it and also submitted a separate support request but no reply as yet.

Do you think they're likely to reply on NYE? I'm doing as much studying as possible but I'm going to run out of time I think!

AnotherOne4 · 01/01/2022 10:32

Happy New Year everyone!!! Here's to a good 2022!

Quick question about Appen invoicing. Is anyone waiting for missing FB surveys to appear on their invoice? How long are you going to wait before you submit?

AppleJane · 01/01/2022 12:32

No reply to extension request so just went for it.

Two sets of 2 exams. Passed both first ones. Missed both second ones by 1 question so failed all. That was a waste of nye and best part of today! 😩

8dpwoah · 01/01/2022 17:57

Oh that's a pain @applejane but I know sometimes some projects give you a second go if you're close so fingers crossed there's still life in that option yet.

@AnotherOne4 I'm going to wait til Weds 5th this time (I think, need to double check the cutoffs on my daily projects) as I got an email from the one that pays well to say they might not get them done til then.

I've always found the missing FB surveys get added on after even if I submit the invoice beforehand, they might not like it but they should align things a bit better if that's the case, shouldn't they 😉

purpleme12 · 01/01/2022 22:29

Can I join this please

Alysskea · 02/01/2022 00:18

Im curious- do those who do this register as self employed?

YonderTweek · 02/01/2022 08:08

@Alysskea

Im curious- do those who do this register as self employed?
I think if you earn over £1000 doing this you need to register as self employed and do the self assessment. That's what I did anyway.
Juancornetto · 02/01/2022 09:38

Thanks so much for all this information. I could really do with some side income so have just signed up for Appen and will keep an eye on this thread Smile

ruralwanderer · 02/01/2022 13:20

@purpleme12 absolutely, please do! Grin

@Alysskea, yes, once you've earnt over £1000 you need to register as self employed and submit a tax return.

AnotherOne4 · 02/01/2022 13:46

Re this self assessment. Am I right in thinking we have until Jan 21st 2022 to declare, and this will relate to any income between April 2020 and April 2021?
So for example, is between that period (April 2020 and April 2021), I earnt less than £1000, I do not have to register as self employed/declare my income?

BaffledAgain · 02/01/2022 17:06

@AnotherOne4 I would like to know the answer to this too. Only started App** in April 2021 but not sure if I declare this now or wait until the start of the next tax year. Have been putting off doing it because it's just another thing I don't understand Blush Hopefully someone will come along with words of wisdom for us

8dpwoah · 02/01/2022 17:49

That's my understanding too, that it runs a year behind so the £30 I earned before April 2021 doesn't need to be counted but now I've gone over £1000 I need to (maybe should already have) register as self employed and be ready to submit a tax return this time next year? There's not much info out there for people earning a little bit over the threshold but not running their own business either is there?
To be fair to HMRC I found the helpline staff genuinely good when I've rung them about tax free childcare and also for a tax rebate when I got made redundant so I might give them a bell after this busy period they're going into!

carrottopper · 02/01/2022 18:13

Where is the best place to start with this please? Newbie and hoping to earn a little more this year ideally from home whilst kids are at school or in bed

AnotherOne4 · 02/01/2022 22:35

Thanks for replying @8dpwoah So I’m thinking I don’t need to register this year, as I didn’t earn over the £1000 mark till the later part of the year Smile (I have the money saved and ready to pay, just pleased I can put it off till next year lol)

8dpwoah · 02/01/2022 23:08

Well we can get done for tax evasion together then as that's what I'm doing too 😂 although I possibly need to build up my tax bill saving pot a little as it currently stands at £0.00 Blush

I have a friend that's an accountant but she has a newborn so I'll ask her after the next couple of months if i get chance.

elvis4nuts · 02/01/2022 23:10

This is very interesting!

8dpwoah · 02/01/2022 23:21

@carrottopper for me it was joining Appen then applying for anything and everything that I thought I might be able to do (there are some that require you to own certain tech kit, often Apple based). I had a few months of only doing Facebook surveys, then got onto an hour a day project that lasts a year, and then got onto a long term project which is quite brain-melting but I'm hoping I'll get ok at it and it will keep me going while my kids are small. I'd have been stuck without the advice on here as I'd have been looking at having to get a new job after a fairly short maternity leave if I had no other income coming in as I only got SMP this time round.

At the same time I signed up to a couple of transcription companies as I knew I type quick and am reasonably good at spelling and grammar, I'm finding this a bit harder to fit round the kids as you do need to be able to focus and be fairly quiet. But I want to keep it ticking over as it's interesting (I've done one today that genuinely made me giggle a few times, it was a lovely little conversation) if not massively well paid. But I think it's good to be on a range of different things in case one of them goes belly-up!

I haven't even had chance to look at any of the other links and projects that are on the opening thread yet after nearly a year, so I'd say pick a few out and try them, stick with anything that seems to suit then chuck in an application to something else once you've sussed if you've got time for something new as well. It's overwhelming to start with and I've applied for loads and loads of Appen projects, even qualifying tests for some, that have gone nowhere but as a result I could/should be earning about £20 (ish) every day for two hours' (ish) work whenever it suits me and with scope to earn more if the kids go to bed on time (toddler) and actually stay asleep for any length of time (newborn) 😂

carrottopper · 02/01/2022 23:29

@8dpwoah thanks so much for your help. So are the appen projects an hour every day? I'll have a look

carrottopper · 02/01/2022 23:31

@8dpwoah are you paid monthly?

I earn just over £1150 a month working part time. Do I need to look at tax implications?

carrottopper · 02/01/2022 23:37

Can I actually get paid for doing surveys? I don't understand.

ruralwanderer · 03/01/2022 07:38

@carrottopper yes you can :) Prolific does exactly this and there are survey tasks on Appen that also pay.

carrottopper · 03/01/2022 09:31

Will I be heavily taxed for a second income? I earn £1150 part time as a teacher
