Merry Christmas @Catatemyhomework Hope you have a nice break Smile
Merry Christmas to everyone else too!

It probably does seem a little overwhelming @CherryBlossom100, I still feel that way sometimes too! Be prepared for a few dead ends (jobs that don't lead anywhere) and bad news.....just got the email that my Ap job is finishing. So I'm on the look out for a new project now.

Buster27 · 23/12/2021 18:46

Merry Christmas @Catatemyhomework (and everyone else in case I'm not on again before the big day!).

@CherryBlossom100 I think in the beginning it's a case of applying for lots and seeing what work comes of it. Over time you'll find what stuff works for you and what doesn't. I found that I went from barely any work to suddenly having more than I could do (and now I have phases of not much and too much, but I always have something to be doing), so I think it does pay off if you stick with it. Also don't be afraid to ask questions here, we were all new to it once Smile

Merry Christmas everyone! I signed up to a few things around this time last year and it took til July for me to get onto anything more then the FB surveys. I'm on two projects now and can barely fit those in so it's definitely worth keeping plugging on!
I'm also into transcription with WWW and to a lesser extent Rev, which pays slightly less if you work out the hourly rate Vs App but it does have the advantage of being fully flexible (no minimum work rate) and I find it more interesting to do too. Well worth a look if you can type fast and can get windows of quiet time in your days to sit and concentrate on it.

Hope everyone has a lovely restful break 🙂

AppleJane · 24/12/2021 11:39

@8dpwoah that sounds a perfect routine to me! May I ask what sort of monthly income do you think that would bring in if someone had a similar routine mon-fri 35 hours a week sort of thing?

MoneyMummy2022 · 28/12/2021 12:03

Hi!
I am currently joining this thread hoping to earn a little extra to go towards the family pot!

I have completed 20 cogs last night (still waiting for some cogs to turn to pending nevermind green however!) and signed up to most of the sites listed in the OP.

Can someone advised how they got started?

I have no tasks available on appen, freelancer seems to have strange unclear tasks and I don't know where to start! x

Any advise would be great. :)

AnotherOne4 · 28/12/2021 12:56

Welcome @MoneyMummy2022 Smile
First off, are you on the right Appen site? Needs to be Appen Connect.

MoneyMummy2022 · 28/12/2021 14:12

@AnotherOne4

I was not! Thank you. I am yet to complete a task but will do so this evening!

This is my Day 2 and so far I have 'earnt' £33!

£20 was a lucky win from one of the 20cogs deals and £13 was free 'cryptocurrenty' for completing training sessions from a Crypto App. Grin

AnotherOne4 · 28/12/2021 14:30

@MoneyMummy2022 you seem to have beginners luck. Well done lol

MoneyMummy2022 · 28/12/2021 14:33

@AnotherOne4 I've decided this is my year's Christmas miracle Xmas Smile

karmakemmie · 28/12/2021 22:25

Hello All,
Has anyone signed up to any Transcription sites and earned a decent amount? Relative, I know Grin. I’m in the process of completing the tests on Way With Words and am wondering —hoping— that it will be worth it?
A PP upthread said it wasn’t that profitable.
I’d be interested to hear others before I fully commit myself. Thanks

karmakemmie · 28/12/2021 22:26

Strikethrough fail 🤦🏿‍♀️

unluckyinlife · 29/12/2021 18:30

I used one I think called Rev. I quickly gave up as the pay for how long it takes was ridiculous but I haven't got experience with other sites.

karmakemmie · 29/12/2021 20:20

That's what I suspected. Thanks

Buster27 · 29/12/2021 20:41

@karmakemmie I tried Rev briefly (twice). I didn't mind it but it wasn't a great earner, although did get a bit better when I moved up to the second level (didn't stick around long enough to get up to the third so don't know if it's worth it if you get there!). I found other things were better earners so when I got enough work elsewhere I dropped Rev.

I earn well on the Appen transcription projects. They have a throughput of x items for an hours pay so if you're fast you can earn more than the hourly rate per hour. And if you have high accuracy you sometimes get put onto quality checking which generally pays better again. Some of them are better earners than others and some people don't get on with them at all, but might be worth a try if you haven't already. The downside is obviously that it's generally shortish term projects so not a consistent earner.

Catatemyhomework · 29/12/2021 21:45

@Buster27, how are you getting on with Yu**n? I've been on it about a month and still very slow. Takes me 15 minutes to do an 8 minute task, although some of the tasks I'm quicker at. Not sure if I like it. It stresses me out and I always feel nervous when I'm on it. Plus tasks are slow coming through. I struggle to do 2 hours some days. I did ok in my first two reviews although I've no idea how. They make me nervous too. Just wondered how you and others on here doing that project are finding it.

Buster27 · 29/12/2021 22:20

@Catatemyhomework Honestly, I've hardly worked on it this month Blush I'm on another project that's been a great earner so trying to put my time into it while I can.
As they only let you invoice for the estimated task time I've always made sure I do it in (near enough) that time. It does mean I don't always do tasks as thoroughly as I think they should be, but other than my first review they've been fine so I just with it. I did find I was a bit nervous with it all at first but that passed.
If your reviews have been ok it sounds like you're doing fine Smile Hopefully your speed will improve as you gain confidence? I did see someone on the chat say this is the worst month for task availability so hopefully it will pick up again in January.

Catatemyhomework · 29/12/2021 22:31

@Buster27, thanks. Do you get told off if you don't work the hours? I did the first week I was on the project. Had covid and felt terrible. I messaged them to say I was ill and wouldn't hit 8 hours and I got an email saying I hadn't hit 8 hours, like a first warning. So I made sure to do my hours after that but sometimes staying up really late as that was when there was work. I took this week off as holiday but fully expect to be told off again. I find it quite strict. I agree with you. I am on another better paid app project at the moment which is easier and I prefer it but I do like the longterm aspect of Y. Good to know that it is possible to get quicker though. The tasks change all the time and you have to get your head around a whole new set of guidelines. I'm going to try and be faster next week!

Buster27 · 29/12/2021 22:58

@Catatemyhomework I received a 'reminder' that I hadn't met the hours one week last month. If you continue not to meet them you're supposed to get a notice and a final notice. But you don't have to meet the hours if there's task shortages (which I assume there has been this month as I haven't gotten any reminders or notices).
You should be ok for this week as you took it as holiday, I took a week in October and it seemed to go through ok Smile
I agree that the longterm aspect is nice.. I really must put more time into it as if I lose it I'll no doubt regret it when other projects dry up!

OP posts:
8dpwoah · 29/12/2021 23:51

I'm struggling with Y* and have been glad a couple of times this week that there's been no tasks so I could put in my hours (unpaid of course but pressure off!) those days. The reality of the project is so far away from the exam and the feedback isn't great although the training materials are really good, I haven't got time to do all of them and actually work the hours 🤦 I do think it will be one that'll get easier with practice though and the unusual tasks are a bit less pressured than the bread and butter ones so I just try to land on those.

As far as transcription goes I like WWW although the pay works out at minimum wage for me, but that's the same as most of these kinds of project I think. If you pick files carefully it's easy and interesting and completely flexible. I'm on Rev too but cocked up a file completely so my metrics went down and I've not had the time or inclination to do anything with them. I do like how you're proofreading and correcting rather than typing from scratch but I think their quality control is draconian. WWW feels like it's a small company of really nice people and to be fair the quick turnaround and/or complicated files do pay quite a bit better if you've the time and energy to take them on.

Anordinarymum · 30/12/2021 00:01

What a good thread. Very interested.

Catatemyhomework · 30/12/2021 11:09

@8dpwoah, kind of glad it's not just me. If the hours are low during the week due to task shortage, how many times are we expected to log on and check? I always find there are tasks at 2am but that's no good long term. I am the same with all the training materials. Really need to do the simulators, etc but I find there isn't time when doing the actual work!

karmakemmie · 30/12/2021 16:10

Thanks for responding. I might persevere with www

AppleJane · 31/12/2021 08:58

Help please!

I've been accepted onto my first Appen project but have 48 hours to pass the qualifying tests. How do I ask for an extension? Tia.

8dpwoah · 31/12/2021 09:26

@catatemyhomework I think it said on the page where the link to report shortages is it says check once or twice on a day (I think!) and then put what you would have worked. So yesterday I did 40mins then it dried up so I reported an hour shortage as I'd have carried on plodding with what I was doing otherwise even thought it was perplexing it wasn't one of the audited style jobs so I felt a bit safer doing it 😂

@AppleJane the project I've done with an exam had a link to request deferral within the invitation email but you might be able to raise a ticket, it might say on the project page as well. That's not a great turnaround over new year though is it!
