Houses, although most of the UK is cheaper than where we live - "abroad" isn't always cheaper. €700,000 for a 3 bed semi in the part of Europe we live in.

TooGood2BeTrue · 22/02/2020 22:12

Overpriced:
Public transport
Dentists
Vets
Private consultants
Builders
Highlights
B&B's
Houses
West End shows
Sourdough bread
Eating out (except in big cities)

Things I find relatively cheap in the UK:
Children's clothes
Window cleaners
Hand carwash
Tea

Theatre tickets
Gig tickets - DH was given a £150 Ticketmaster voucher for his birthday, so decided to get us tickets to see ELO. Cheapest ones were £90 each, (and they were at the very back, miles from the stage).
Kid's shoes
Secondary school uniform
Crap restaurants - DD wanted to go to Frankie and Benny's for lunch today; I'm pretty skint so checked the menu online first - £14 odd for a salad, £4 for a bowl of chips. Forget it!
House stuff that you have to pay someone else to do, but is basically unskilled - my boss had someone round to clean out her gutters and seal a couple of gaps a few weeks ago. They were on the premises less than an hour and charged her £300.
Rent

RedWineForMePlease · 22/02/2020 22:25

Dildos.

Carrots are far cheaper.

mamamalt · 22/02/2020 22:31

Anything for maternity and breastfeeding... basically anything that is to do with being a woman, add 10%. Makes me so pissed off

partofthepeanutgallery · 22/02/2020 22:39

Activities to do with kids! Amusement parks, movies, bowling, trampolining, wall climbing, restaurants, etc ... all ridiculously expensive. Don't know how many families can afford to take their kids out!

recklessgran · 22/02/2020 22:42

Theatre and cinema tickets

Fabvegetablegrower · 22/02/2020 22:52

Hair colours at the salon
Air pods
Levi jeans
Clarins skincare
House prices

Gwenhwyfar · 22/02/2020 22:55

"Cinema and cinema snacks"

£4 cinema tickets where I live. I still never go.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/02/2020 23:03

"Perfume. I refuse to buy it."

Yes, I just go without most of the time. I always take a free squirt in the shop and try to get it on my coat and hope it'll stay on. I tried the cheap day perfumes from Zara but they disappear.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/02/2020 23:04

"Most cosmetics"

Cosmetics vary so much, I'm surprised you can say 'most cosmetics'.

PixieDustt · 22/02/2020 23:04

Decent toilet roll!
You can get cheaper toilet roll but that 2ply is too risky!

Gwenhwyfar · 22/02/2020 23:06

"Gym membership £38 a month for the council leisure centre, or it’s £5.50 per class if you’re a non-member, so to get your money’s worth you need to go to 2 classes per week, every week. "

No budget gym near you? They cost a lot less.

squiglet111 · 22/02/2020 23:12

Theme park entry fees. Disgraceful!

partofthepeanutgallery · 22/02/2020 23:21

Ah yes. Secondary school uniforms. Ridiculous prices due to unreasonable Academies in the area who want everything 'logoed' and single suppliers. Madness. hope the govt steps in on that one now.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/02/2020 23:22

"Berries. Even when in season it's £2.50 for a handful of raspberries."

A bit cheaper frozen, but berries are just expensive things.

Babybel90 · 23/02/2020 05:54

@Gwenhwyfar nope, I live in a small town. There’s a couple of privately owned gyms that cost about the same as the council gym but are considerably smaller with fewer facilities.

JonnyPocketRocket · 23/02/2020 05:59

(New) baby clothes - they're only in them for a couple months!
Edible gluten free bread 😭

Seventygood · 23/02/2020 12:34

Farrow and ball paint

missmouse101 · 23/02/2020 12:51

Solicitors and mirrors. I disagree about vets though. The actual costs they incur are huge. X Ray machine, hanging on the wall costing many 000s but used only a couple of times a week, massive drugs bill every week, insurance, staff CPD, specialist instruments and equipment, wages, laundry, running a veterinary ambulance, necessary anaesthetic and theatre equipment. The list goes on and on and on...

Largeyellowdaffodil · 23/02/2020 13:43

But you are not really paying for the G&T, you are paying for the ambience of the Park Lane Hilton.

You have clearly never been to the Park Lane Hilton.

RJnomore1 · 23/02/2020 14:11

I’m pretty sure berries are so expensive because they still have to be hand picked

HeronLanyon · 23/02/2020 15:23

I always think berries are a rip off. I do massive annual pick of wild blackberries. One year I actually worked out the hours wandering lanes (did a kind of hourly rate)., the soaking and washing and drying and freezing and bagging and suddenly it didn’t seem so bad. I don’t consider time spent anymore as it’s fun.
