DojaCat · 22/02/2020 20:42

I think cleaners are overpriced for the job they do.

Halloumi is also overpriced. Wish I could find Cypriot halloumi for £1/1.50

ClinkyMonkey · 22/02/2020 20:50

Cafe prices at National Trust properties - I know it's a charity, but come on ...

Most stuff.

I’m always surprised at how little jewellery is actually worth. We think of gold and diamonds as having high intrinsic value but second hand they’re worth a lot less. Obviously fashions change but the the difference between the values is quite wide.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 22/02/2020 21:02

@DojaCat where do you live? I'm sure halloumi is about that price round here. Want me to send you some?

Helini · 22/02/2020 21:07

Berries. Even when in season it's £2.50 for a handful of raspberries.

Surfer25 · 22/02/2020 21:09

Perfume.
Scented water...

RJnomore1 · 22/02/2020 21:17

I’m pretty sure there are some activities you can do at centre Paris for free 😬😂

BarbaraofSeville · 22/02/2020 21:18

Proper halloumi is made with sheep and goat milk, which is more expensive to produce than cows.

We have aldi and Costco halloumi in our fridge, both of which costs only slightly more than £1.50 a pack but I don't think either counts as 'proper' halloumi as the Costco version says made with a mix of cow, goat and sheep milk without specifying the percentages and aldi says unspecified mix of milk, so both could be mostly cows milk for all I know.

Predictably Waitrose sells a variety of proper halloumi, but at twice the price. I'm quite happy with our cheap halloumi but if I get to a Waitrose (there's only one in my city and all the other supermarkets are closer) I could buy some of the good stuff to compare.

Picking your own berries is a great way to illustrate why they cost so much. Takes forever and you get scratched to buggery. I find frozen ones are fine for trifle, cereal, yogurt etc and much cheaper.

I have family up north and I live in the south, so I find most things overpriced. I know there are higher rents to take into account in the south but not to the extent to justify the extra prices. We had a takeaway in the south tonight for two people, it cost the same as a takeaway we had in the north two weeks ago. The biggest difference is often petrol/diesel. Many times when visiting my family we’ll fill up at Shell/BP, despite my mum telling us that it’s expensive, as it’s the same price as supermarket petrol in the south.

The travel size tissues . You pay the price of a large box of tissues get 10 tissues and the little sticky flap never sticks back down so your tissues always have a manky looking semi-circle in the middle of them where the flap has been up.

The ferry from N Ireland to Scotland. Two and a bit hours on a ferry, many times I've been on it and it's been so busy that you dh and I have had to split up and take a child each just to get sitting down. A clean fortune for a coffee to pass the time (although admittedly that's optional) and for that you could pay between £400 and £500 if you need to travel in the height of summer at the weekend. Which people often do if the accommodation they have booked on the other side has a Saturday changeover day...

£500 to cross a bit of sea that is so tiny that at its narrowest point that on a clear day you can actually stand on one side of the sea and actually see the cars and buildings on the other side. Although I concede that the actual boat crossing doesn't take the direct route across the narrowest point, on account of a lack of harbours...

Still, it's extortionate , and the price is suspiciously always identical between the two competing operators Hmm

BarbaraofSeville · 22/02/2020 21:44

doja but certain parts of London probably have great Cypriot grocers that sell the good stuff for the same price as standard supermarket version. And how much is it in aldi or lidl in London? Sainsburys is that price everywhere as it's one of the most expensive supermarkets.

FlamingoAndJohn · 22/02/2020 21:49

Vegetarian food in restaurants

I agree. I don’t mind when it’s a well made dish that involves some effort but when it’s just pasta and tomato for £11 I get pissed off.

I also agree with train travel, or the variation in prices really. It’s so damn complex. I can get a ticket to London for £16 but only if I buy it 6 months, 4 days and 2 hours before I travel and only if I travel on a Wednesday when there’s a r in the month.

Magazines
The crackers for cheese that DH likes at £4 for a box which has about 15 in.
Metro tickets - £5.30 return into Newcastle. So £10.60 for DH and I. Might as well drive and park.
Gas and electricity.
Lightbulbs are mad prices.
Our cats favourite food which they are refusing to eat anything but at the moment £5.75 a day! But I love them.
Chocolate.

isabellerosignol club card voucher can be changed for vouchers towards the ferry ( both companies), which can cut the cost in half

Seventygood · 22/02/2020 21:52

Meant to read "Tesco club card vouchers"

True, but the last time we used them there were so many conditions attached to them that we actually only saved something like £20 compared with buying the cheapest economy ticket. I could have cried.
