Does anyone else “smell” … funny?😳

When I was a kid, the loo always smelled “funny” after my DMum had used it.

Fast forward 40 years, now I’m smelling that smell when I use the loo (or just on/about me in general)

I can’t describe it 😳

Am 48 - guess Mum would have been similar age at the time?

FWIW I shower every day and wash at other end of the day

tia 🙏

I am only 40 but starting to sweat a lot more than I used to,and my bedding is starting to smell like my Nan's did after only a few nights. I mean for me it's not a bad smell as such because I associate it with her love and comfort, but objectively it is definitely fusty. Oh the joys of getting older.

It's not urinary incontinence, at all. If it were it would be fairly easy to describe the smell, it would smell like stale wee. Which it doesn't.

What in the JML Direct is a pelvic floor chair?

Nearly two hours have slipped by and still no answer to your question about the pelvic floor chair.

Anyone who knows should feel free to step in.

It’s probably some kind of urinary incontinence. Try the pelvic floor chair

It most definitely isn’t urine or a smell anything like urine. Completely different.

I had similar when breastfeeding, it’s hormonal in origin but GP couldn’t quite articulate how and why.

Google Emsella chair.

Goodness gracious! I googled it.

I've smelled like onions since I was 30, notice it when i start scrubbing in the shower and I'm just now finding out I'm not alone. Thank you ladies.

Sometimes correcting a hormone imbalance with HRT can help. (Especially try pessaries like Vagifem).

notnorman · 12/09/2025 07:40

Me wee smelled like sugar puffs yesterday. But I was drinking real coffee (usually instant)

Yup op, exact same! Also I wake in the morning stinking no matter what the weather now, only time I didn’t I had a shower, moisturised with a very scented body lotion and used deodorant before bed. Not willing to do that nightly!! The joys!!!

eta am 45 and my bathroom smells like my granny and grandads used to so I use candles and try various toilet ducks and … no I don’t clean it anymore than I used to, I’m too exhausted!!!

Edited

Me too. It makes me thank the stars I'm single. That, and the snoring I do these days. And nights!!
I always noticed my mum's smell too after she turned maybe 65. I hated it, although it wasn't a nasty smell. I call it a personal smell amd noticed it years ago after a collegue used the loo. We were only in our late 30s at the time. Then, in recent years, I've noticed i have the same smell in the bathroom with/on me.
On occasion, I've had to tell mum she smells like 'old lady' which I've only noticed twice, and it's in general, not after a loo visit. She is 84 though.
The joys of aging!

This is just a thought, but maybe if so many are like this we should just accept it as natural and, provided showers are regular and water intake is good, stop trying to fight nature?

This is something I've wondered about for a long time. Of all the mammals out there humans seem to be the only ones who are horrified by our natural smell and will go to extraordinary lengths to hide it. When you think about it, that's quite strange.

WhatAboutTheOtherOne · 12/09/2025 09:27

I couldn’t get my toilet to smell ok and I cleaned and cleaned it. I took apart the toilet seat and used all sorts of chemicals but it would still have a smell🤢 . I recently realised there was a build up of calcium hidden under the rim and I’m hoping that now that I’ve removed it the loo will smell better.

I also notice that walking through a perfume area in a department store makes me feel really ill.

EasySqueezy · 12/09/2025 09:34

I have noticed, when travelling in France, that the toilets have a peculiar smell to them. I put it down to the strong coffee that people drink there. It isn't very pleasant.

Calliopespa · 12/09/2025 09:35

... though, that said, I haven't yet noticed the oniony smell so might not be so brave about suggesting that when it hits! On the other hand, this world has changed through centuries because of the behaviours of people far braver than I, so maybe some MNers are up to appearing in public in full onion-honk mode!

Oh Paris? Same smell as the metro? (Probably because of people peeing in the tunnels)

Same here. I avoid the perfume department.

Thinking about it, I wonder if the obsession with one's natural smell is a symptom of over crowding. When did it begin?

No idea. I only know that before running water in homes people must have had a very different experience of each other.

Handyweatherstation · 12/09/2025 09:53

I agree, @Calliopespa. It's not so very long since almost no home had running water. My grandfather was born in 1907 and grew up in a house with no bathroom and a house in France my brother bought in the 80s only had one tap, in the kitchen. Maybe people then were more tolerant of the natural smell of humanity.

cheesycheesy · 21/09/2025 13:04

Tried my temu persimmon soap this morning. Made in china so I’m not sure about the testing of it though. It does seem really effective. I whiff fairly quickly after a shower sometimes especially during my period but the soap has prevented that so far.

Handyweatherstation · 21/09/2025 13:19

'the soap' - I'm calling it that from now on Grin

Still working for me too. Great, isn't it.

PigletJohn · 21/09/2025 15:17

Have you found a way to launder clothes, that removes the persistent odour?

Mercurysinretrograde · 21/09/2025 15:21

Itsybitsytitsy · 07/09/2025 16:29

@Mercurysinretrograde try cranberry capsules, some wonderful poster recommended it for the fishy smell after eating fish, it really works. I take the capsules on the day that I eat fish 😊. I buy mine from Morrison's.

And a huge thank you for the cranberry capsules tip! It’s made a big difference - I can eat fish again, but I also seem to smell fabulous generally, no more musty menopausal smell!
