Does anyone else “smell” … funny?😳

When I was a kid, the loo always smelled “funny” after my DMum had used it.

Fast forward 40 years, now I’m smelling that smell when I use the loo (or just on/about me in general)

I can’t describe it 😳

Am 48 - guess Mum would have been similar age at the time?

FWIW I shower every day and wash at other end of the day

tia 🙏

Yep, 47 here. I have had all the medical checks going and there’s nothing “wrong” with me, but my urine smells different, I smell different even when clean and my armpits smell like onions. I am fairly far through perimenopause but not needed HRT yet as virtually no other symptoms apart from very rare periods but I do stink.

My sister had a crazy bad smell fthat no medicated deodorant would touch or a few months but it did go away. This too shall pass. In the meantime, get Mitchum deodorant, frequent showers and clothes changes if needed.

Definitely try the deodorant, I personally don't use anything else.

I find this really funny in an odd oh I was kind of right fort of way. When my other half was loosing weight. A couple of stone. I noticed he smelt completely different for a while. I wonder if it was toxic sort of things leaving the body or a change in chemicals in his body ect.

I went through a really ripe oniony smell before I started HRT. I remember thinking my DC’s smelt like that when they were starting puberty so likely hormonal changes. It didn’t last long for either them or me. I’d recommend AKT deodorant- amazing stuff, and I very rarely smell in the pits even after exercise. Curious about the persimmon soap for the rest of me to ward off future smells. DH has a v keen sense of smell and has commented on my DM’s ‘old lady smell’ but thankfully no comments about me yet!

PersephoneParlormaid · 08/09/2025 20:55

My wee sometimes smells sweet if I’ve eaten something sweet, but I’m not diabetic, had the blood test.

Does that AKT work on armpits? I've seen it advertised for feet etc and wasn't sure.

The body starts to breakdown as you age and releases a fusty kind of smell. It’s a compound in the skin called 2-nonenal. Washing with persimmon soap can help with this.

Oh bugger off. Thus doesn’t happen in your 40s, you idiot.

BellissimoGecko · 08/09/2025 21:19

The is common in perimenopause; seems to resolve in menopause.

What resolves itself?

Actually, it does start to see signs of significant ageing in about mid-40s.

Not breaking down as in decaying as such, but certainly biological decline.

Yes, it’s primarily a deodorant for pits, apparently originally made for the rigours of west end performances, but can be used anywhere on the body - it’s like a thick cream that you rub on the skin. It looks quite expensive but one tube lasts me about 3mths as you only need a small amount. You can get small tester tubes as well. The scents are nice, not overpowering and there is a non scented one. I don’t work for them btw 😂

Smelling odd or different.

Smell.

I think that's what she means.

And why are you so rude in your arrogant reply, "you idiot"? 😑

I do think this is something different. Something to do with a specific period only. My mum doesn’t have this smell any more but I do.

Fatlittlefruits · 08/09/2025 22:55

Well - I showered with my new persimmon soap this evening. It was nice to use and I now smell fresh and a bit fruity - very pleasant. I braved using it on my nether regions and didn't suffer the burning sensation reported upthread.

I've lost my sense of smell since having nasal polyps - so I don't have the problem of worrying about how I smell!

I think this is very similar to the points I was (very superficially) referencing above.

It's not so much a breaking down like a decomposition, but rather a less efficient uptake and assimilation of things like antioxidants. I find it reassuring to think it's sort of less stuff being efficiently taken on board, rather than a loss of bodily self! A kind of upload versus download distinction.

I know the body does break down quite literally in the weeks before death, but 40's seems quite early to kick off with all that.

My weird "new" smells...

Boobs - sour milk.
Neck - vinegar.
Apron belly (also fucking new) - onion.
Thigh/groin area - i call these curry crevices. So probably onion with a hint of spice. I'm really not a spice eater so it's so weird.

On the plus side (and let's face it, we take what we can at the moment!), my pits are now 99% dry and non smelling at all despite being one sweaty caaaw my entire life.

Every cloud and all that.

Curry crevices! I am DEAD! 😂😂😂😂 in the vet waiting room like a lunatic too, thanks😂

This thread! I hadn't noticed a smell but my god do I hum of persimmon soap and paranoia now.

Handyweatherstation · 09/09/2025 17:52

Well! Day two of using persimmon soap and my pits no longer smell of onions, it's a miracle! GrinGrinGrin
