Does anyone else “smell” … funny?😳

When I was a kid, the loo always smelled “funny” after my DMum had used it.

Fast forward 40 years, now I’m smelling that smell when I use the loo (or just on/about me in general)

I can’t describe it 😳

Am 48 - guess Mum would have been similar age at the time?

FWIW I shower every day and wash at other end of the day

tia 🙏

I’m in my 60s, 15 years post menopause, and I smell different - I notice it around my neck, especially on nightwear. Don’t like it! My initial fear was that it was the ‘Parkinson’s smell’ that can apparently predate symptoms, but everything’s still moving OK. Maybe I’ll try persimmon soap - though it was evilly expensive last time I looked

Also in my 60s and get a musty smell on my chest area. I have been putting deodorant on there but will try the permission soap.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 08/09/2025 09:08

I think of the toilet smell as a 'sharp' smell with dulled edges if that makes sense. I don't find it unpleasant as such (not that I'm going round sniffing it deliberately or anything - I'm not THAT weird). But it's definitely a thing, and it's not related to health - it's far too general for that.

I've not noticed it on myself but then I live alone (so usually wee with the toilet door open) and now have pessaries to treat vaginal atrophy. But the 'older lady toilet smell' is definitely real. As is the 'old person smell', which is a dusty kind of smell like very old scented talc.

User3459876295 · 08/09/2025 09:09

Hmmm come to think of it, I started HRT earlier this year and I haven't noticed the smell on myself recently.

Smells are strange though aren't they? Because there are two people involved, the smeller and the smellee. I remember how unbearably strong some smells seemed during early pregnancy.

There's also potentially the effect of all those changing enzymes in menopause. So maybe a food that we've eaten and digested all our lives without any side effects, might start to change the odour of either our wee or our bodies themselves.

Maybe I’m stinky but rinsing my vulva with water wouldnt be enough to clean it! I use a gentle shower gel/sanex type cleanser and have never had any issues.

If a man didn't wash his ball and just used water you'd expect him to reek, no different to a woman. Obviously not inside and yes, a gentle soap or wash, definitely agree.

LoafofSellotape · 08/09/2025 09:19

What is it about the persimmon that is so special rather than just bar soap? I can understand switching to bar soap from shower gel and there being a big difference.

So here we are, trying to help. In a group - menopausal women trying to offer advice/suggestions/empathy. Here you are just offering ......what??

Excuse me?
I am a woman and wanting to know if that would help indicate the smell people are discussing. I have not yet experienced the smell, but like other women on this thread am trying to learn, which I am perfectly entitled to do. Several people have mentioned sugar puff smell and I am not sure if they mean this branded sugar puff or a bakery version.

If you scroll back you will see I "offered" some information about there being an issue with antioxidant levels falling - which is probably more than you have offered the thread by jumping on me in this unpleasantly snappy way for asking a simple question. I am genuinely wondering if that is the smell. Obviously this thread has made us all keen to avoid it and it helps, therefore, to know what we are looking for. People have had problems describing the smell on this thread, so obviously being able to sniff a box of cereal might be a case of " a sniff is worth a thousand words." Please just back off.

You didn't post anything wrong, fortunately there are no thread police here despite some people adopting the role 😉

Thank you. Yes, I agree.

I think sometimes people just come on in a foul mood and are looking for an excuse to hit out verbally.

Have you been checked for diabetes?

No but im going to ask now its been mentioned. Thank you.

Lookingatabookshelf · 08/09/2025 12:58

I had this when I was pregnant and my husband called it baby vomit smell. Now in peri I get what I think of as Bovril wee. It's not all the time but sometimes it just smells like Bovril that kind of mild ,warm, savoury smell.

notacooldad · 08/09/2025 13:02

This thread has got me paranoid!!!
Im 60. Im taking hrt. Ive not noticed a change of smell on me or a strong odour when I wee.
I asked dh to do a sniff test on me and he said nothing smells.
Ive ordered some persimmon soap just in case!!! 😆 🤣

Its interesting that we have descriptions from Bovril and vinegary, sharp, warm, meaty and then sweet or sugar puff at the other end.

I suspect it might be a range of different things? Sweet or fruity I had always heard was a sign of diabetes.

justasking111 · 08/09/2025 13:24

Boobs I'd say like strong yeasty smell. Below the Dixie line, only after a nights sleep if at all. Husband however, mind you he eats like a Neanderthal, lots of meat and as spicy as possible. So outside factors do count.

PersephoneParlormaid · 08/09/2025 14:39

Chateau su Savon has household soaps, including flakes

ByTicklishGreenEagle · 08/09/2025 14:44

I noticed i smelled funny after emptying my bladder....it reminded me of the way my great grandmother's toilet used to smell? Skip to the end.....I was dehydrated?! I'm 45 this year (old to some) and have been told I'm now peri menopausal by my contraceptive nurse!

SnappyCyanShaker · 08/09/2025 14:58

My mum would have an odor after using the toilet

cheesycheesy · 08/09/2025 15:26

My wee used to smell like frazzles for a while. It doesn’t anymore. Not peri related as it was years ago. I always wonder why that was!

GentleMintCat · 08/09/2025 15:28

Goodness sake! I thought it was me writing this. Similar age, similar problem, and it exactly reminds me of my mum as well. I think it might be a urine smell—maybe our bodies or kidneys don’t filter it properly? I haven’t done deep research on it, but my daughter even says, “Eek, Mum, this smells!” Perhaps more hydration would help?

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 08/09/2025 15:40

PyongyangKipperbang · 06/09/2025 23:49

If its only when you go to the loo, its probably urine.

If it smells sweet then see the doctor as it can be related to diabetes, if it smells "meaty" like bacon or hotdog brine, drink more water as it usually related to dehydration.

I agree. its gp time.. get it tested. It could be anything and it could have a very easy remedy.

I think Canestest do a range of testing products.

My GP said to use a shower gel that's the right PH for the nether regions.. and dont use antibacterial shower gel which is alkaline there because it would disturb the natural PH balance.

justasking111 · 08/09/2025 15:40

I'm on painkillers four times a day so 14 pills water for each pill, they get stuck otherwise. So I don't get dehydrated and smell anything.

Something about enzymes I think

TabbyM · 08/09/2025 16:01

OMG, I am NOT ALONE in my one armpit honking of onions!!!!! Am currently on HRT* but it is a bit cooler up here so haven't noticed recently. Must tell DH this is a thing!

*not sure if it is making much difference re sweating/flooding/smelling odd but hopefully will re bone density and brain health.

MamainWonderland · 08/09/2025 16:02

A company called Purdy and Figg do an essential oil blend that is specifically for post-flush use in the toilet to disguise any lingering aroma (called Oh! de loo, I believe). A temporary solution maybe?

spoonbillstretford · 08/09/2025 16:05

I'm 50 and only smell a bit when I go to the loo when I need a shower. Solved by having a shower.

My DM smelled slightly vinegary at one point but that was when her diabetes was not well-controlled.

The smell I am referring too is neither sweet or savoury. I think those may well be indications of a health issue (the sweet er smell anyway).
